  • OMG that Subaru blew a stop sign and almost T-boned the camera vehicle at 4:13!!! This video is too reckless, I don't want a Su Bah Ru anymore

  • Groove chicks!

  • 3:31 eat you heart our Corvair!

  • Anyone else hearing wacky renditions of Mussorgsky?

  • I love the van. There is an electric conversion one that I see around town occasionally, sounds perfect for me. There is a also a stock one that has been seen towing a trailer! Actually, making a mini camper would rule! I wonder if anyone ever put an engine transplant in one? I had a Turbo Chevy Sprint until Oct of this year, sold it after 20 years of fun and reliability. A more like that would likely make this car more efficient and really fast.

  • small car driving wild. How cute. If U.S drivers bought that kiddy car just after the oil shock, trillions of barrels of oil should have saved, U.S govt, saved billions of dollars.

  • To be really honest, I don't think it's ugly. It's got a certain appeal to those clunky little eyes, and the practically circular lines.

Granted, the commercial is.. optimistic about handling and such.

    Lol

  • If that car sold not in 1972, in 1974, maybe a lot of customers want to buy that.

    Bad timing ruin the market

  • Wonder what one of the 360 trucks would look like after it got into an Argument w/a

    fully-loaded Ford Super Duty ?

  • 2:08 "All kinds of people are driving Subarus - including some real groovy chicks!"

  • "Gran Prix handeling!" As it drives off the tarmac and nearly into a fence...

  • I thought he said, "... a little something that'll make you feel shitless." lol

  • Too many consumer features gov requirements to get 66 mph now!

  • Good 'ole 2 strokes

  • Gran Prix handling? Oh please, my shopping trolley handles better than that!

  • cheap & beautiful.... wait, cheap IS beautiful!

  • I like how the skinny guy gets in, and the car rocks back and forth.

  • I bought a Subaru 360 from the dealer in Texas that I was working for when I was 18. Talk about a fun little car. You take the rubber seal out of the top of any sedan and turn it into a convertible by popping the top out...went back in the same way.

I used to load my girlfriends family into it and go to the Dairy Queen drive thru. We would order 8 cherry colas...the waiter or waitress would always ask if there were 8 people in there...guess what...there was!!

  • i cant get over those glasses

  • some of those parking jobs... so illegal.

  • Looks like they made that in sound super eight film.

  • Great car

    I love them

  • I suppose that minitruck is the BRAT's father.

  • volkswagen beetle copycat, let's face it Japan did copied everything from Europe to America, even their ancient culture is copied. Then Japs making fun at Koreans & Chinese. Wasn't Japanese language is from Korea and culture is from China?

  • @KingofKpop I think they mostly copied the Fiat 500, an Italian 2 cylinder car with a big sunroof and suicide doors, just like the 360.

  • @Ryoku75

and both of those copied the beetle, which came first. so ha!

  • @herbienbrian2 And the Beetle copied the Tatra 87.

  • @Ryoku75

    hm, touche...

  • incredible!!

  • leather steering wheel cover, tach, racing stripes!!?!?!?!?!?!??!

    WHERE DO I GET ONE!!!???

  • lol sue-bar-oooh

  • The Subaru models are reminding me of the FIAT (FIAT 600 also with the engine in the back)models in that time periot.

    Maybe the Subarus are copies.

  • @GoliathAngelus no,subaru at that time copied the vw sedan (bug).

  • @jesamani75

I believe that it is and if you say so,it must be true but It must be a Subaru joke because it didn t worked out at all.(bad copy)

On the other hand it is a fun car especially when you own one now but the parts are hard to get and to find i think.

  • ill definately drive this to work.

  • I bet everyone in this commercial had massive bushes...just saying

  • @clearererick in 1972???i wouldnt doubt it lol

  • manse!

  • Hahaha!! We were even pissing off Mustang owners off in 1969. (1:09)

  • the van looks cool.

  • Very interesting cars and I'd love to own one. The problem is, the 1969 Consumer Reports (April) article about this car paints a grim picture of the safety of these. Obviously if you own one today, you drive locally or to a show and that's about it, but just knowing the doors can fly open at any time is pretty scary..

  • 'Including some very groovy chicks" LOLOL!

  • Look at them trying to be like VW lol

  • Americans are too fat to fit in that car now.

  • @waldrop32 I just sat in one today!

  • US-drivers are interested in economy? Since when? :D ;)

  • I want a sooBARoo, too!

  • Land of the rising sun, and of the fallen nuke!

  • The racetrack scene and truck were hilarious! These were golf carts and nothing more.

  • This "Su-bar-u" will never catch on.(sarcasm)

  • I LOVE these little cars, but is there anyone else out there that thinks that it may not have exactly been the greatest selling point for Subaru to call their own cars cheap & ugly?!!

  • I'd love to have one. But if you find one in good shape, I'll bet it's not cheap.

  • stupid people in huge numberes ruin this country every day.

  • Haha, a 42" lawn tractor has more than 18 hp.

  • Comment removed

  • wow classic commercial. thanks for sharing. one thing hasnt changed, subarus are still ugly. when it actually designs something nice (04-05 wrx/sti) and upcoming 2011 sti/wrx, they will realize it looks good, and then change it back to ugly.. look what happend after the 04-05 subaru wrx/sti

  • sue-barr-you :)

  • Can I get a 360 STi?

  • "we call it cheap and ugly" lol...

  • I don't mind owning one of those. Price of gas is going up again.

  • Im a subaru enthusiast but this is why people mustve started hating imports. people were driving the classic mustangs and F bodys back then and then you see some little tool roll up in that thing...

  • I WANT THAT VAN!

  • Well the STI isn't cheap these days but the tradition of ugly is still going strong lol

  • they dumped alot of asian made cars in california back in the 60's and 70's

  • @harley1450000 Washington too.

  • naaa. the original van was the vw. or the dkw schnellaster from the 40s

  • @1:18 Imagine how pissed off you would be if someone parked one of those things sideways in front of you boxing you in!

  • soo bar roo

  • i think the origional minivan was the fiat multipla from the 1950s

  • And chrysler says it was the first mini van on the us market lol I'm thinking " Sue Bar ew" was. LOL

  • Poor subbie at 3:05

  • well, never thought i'd say this about a car, but this car looks terrible!

by that i mean the design.

seriously, that being said by a man who thinks Lada, Wartburg and Škoda are pretty, so this has to be something! they could have ripped off fiat better!

it looks like an underfed zaporozhec...

we were lucky to have zastava 750, and polski fiat... thank you yugoslavia!

  • This beach is getting boring, lets hit the track! LOL

  • Swing axle fun!

  • I want one! This would be an awesome car to take to classic car shows.

  • lol leather gloves with swimming trunks

  • i tricked mine out. gave it new paint job. Added one of them' water gadgets. Now it gets double mpg and it runs on water. 100% green car luls.

  • so what else is new 30 times

  • utility. something subaru is good at

  • If they can do 66 MPG then why not now? I

  • @TOMGPII :

No weight in that car. 2cyl engine. Todays safety standards have made cars inherently heavy requiring them to have more powerful engines and making fuel economy worse.. In addition, a 2 stroke engine is now illegal.

  • @TOMGPII Because these only had 18hp lol. I don't think you could sell 66mpg to even the most hard core tree hugger these days with that little power. Also, all the safety requirements the days would make one that heavy it wouldn't move.

    Yay for evolution...

  • @TOMGPII Safety requirements - those things were little tin cans that had exactly jack for protection in crashes. Things like air bags and the like add to the weight of the car, which in turn requires a more powerful engine, which in turn reduces fuel economy.

  • @TOMGPII -- because these days people prefer to drive cars with engines displacing more than 0.4 liters.

  • @TOMGPII politics

  • @TOMGPII stupid people in high places

  • @TOMGPII Unlike bugs, it wasn't exactly an 'honest' 66.

    Vdub powah

  • @TOMGPII

cause of all this right here:

At one point, Bricklin had to destroy thousands of units when they failed to meet new stringent U.S. safety standards. (It was cheaper to destroy them than to ship them back to Japan.)

Not to mention emission standards and the fact that "up to 66mpg" would be more like 40mpg today thanks to the more rigorous fuel economy tests.. No A/C in this car for one!

  • that is a good question. diesel power

  • @TOMGPII The 360 managed 66mpg due to weight of 900 lbs & a tiny 356 cc two cyl 2stroke motor. A combination that wouldn’t pass safety or emissions regulations today. It took a full minute to hit 50 mph & topped out @ 60, pretty dangerous to try to take onto the freeway. 66mpg claim was valid for 25mph or so, & dropped to 28mpg at 40mph as you had to drive it flat out just to keep up & not get run down by traffic. You’d be taking you life in your hands driving this on the street nowadays...

  • @TOMGPII Crash safety and ride comfort mostly. Crumple zones and airbags add up pretty quickly as do sound deadening and comfortable seats. You wouldn't want to hit a modern car of any size in one of these things.

Emissions has an effect as well.

  • @TOMGPII AWD, mostly

  • @polypolyman And don't forget they only weighed about as much as a golf cart.

  • @TOMGPII Keep in mind the 360 takes awhile to get up to speed, but in the 80's Suzuki made the Sprint which could get 60 and was reasonably quick, even in the US after emissions. They say that modern safety features are what're holding cars back, I think its poor design and unnecessary features like GPS systems.

  • @TOMGPII good question. i like diesel. 50 mpg.

  • @TOMGPII Cars have to actually be safe now.

  • @TOMGPII

Because nobody likes driving clown cars that cause instant death if you crash going over 30 mph?

  • @xsharpy dont drink and drive :P

  • what bout knocked up interior

  • i own a wrx. though i have yet to land a belly dancer

  • Thanks for posting this... this is what cars should be - miserly with a buck and a gallon of gas.

  • Subaru saved my life!

  • Malcolm Bricklin brought these cars to America, and the 360 series (the compct sedan, truck and van) sold zilch everywhere except California, the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii. The WWII generation was still alive and kicking in the late '60's (God bless 'em!) and they were reluctant to embrace not only Subaru but all Japanese makes at that time. The 360 platform had serious quality control and crashworthiness problems and nearly sunk the marque before it got started. Modern Subarus are good cars.

  • It just so happens...that I spent about 15 minutes in a Subaru FF1 (Star 1) at the slavage yard today while it was pouring down rain, I was totally amused the entire time! Reply if you need any taillights, they were perfect!

  • really tiny little guys. I bet the Smart was inspired by the 360.

  • its like a vw beatle but mor ugly than usual.. haha!

    ps: very cool clip!

  • I managed to restore the Truck version off of a few bodies and parts I found here and there.

I can actually park inside my living room, through the sliding door. Its wonderful! I can even do my job as a laundry delivery guy with it, plus, this day and agem the 66 MPG really goes a long way

  • The car of chioce for drag racing, and autocross!

  • some very groovy chicks drive them!

  • today there cheaper for there caliber and this things a shaiza i mean this things like super 60s and the van and truck are just pushing the envelope waaaaay to far the only starline that looks remotley normal is the star 3 and thats a wagon!

  • Will you get a load of those glasses as 2:43? How '60s are those, huh?

  • ich fahren ein trabant

  • Just don't get hit in one!

  • you got that right

  • I missed the sport styling on the 360 SS, racing stripes was it a compeditior to a Schwinn or a Chevelle SS with the stripes?

That console color TV easily doubled the value of the truck. I like the mini skirt hottie going up the stairs though

  • The only US Sold Subaru 360 I didn't have was the Young - shown here with the Sport Kit parts. Higher HP. The Van was really fun to drive, as soon as I got up to speed the traffic lights would change to red ! The Pick Up actually had lower gearing but not by much, lots of fun there too - I made a lumber rack for mine. My friend JP was a real expert on these cars, got his first one at age 12 !

  • i love the park job.

  • They're cool little cars, but don't even get close to 66mpg in real driving conditions. I owned one for a few years and, between city and open-road driving, the highest I could get was 35MPG without getting run over by a soccer mom. Still, nothing out there like it. Fun to drive, quirky and entertaining. Turned a lot of heads.

  • Well, Subaru had to start from somewhere...

  • i would love to have the truck verson... 66 mpg that would be sick.. wish i could find one that was stored away after it was bought, hehe pretty much brand new :P

  • There was a lot of implied sexual action going on there in the beginning. The threesome in the beginning. The bikini gal getting picked up by the dude on the beach. The miniskirt hotty going up the steps.

  • I wonder how often these cars flipped or rolled over during sharp turns.

  • lol

  • subaru horse power lollllllll!!!!!

  • Malcolm Bricklin was the investor who imported these cars into the U.S. in 1969.

I don't believe these little gems actually ever made it for sale east of the Mississippi. They were sold exclusively at West Coast U.S. dealers.

At one point, Bricklin had to destroy thousands of units when they failed to meet new stringent U.S. safety standards. (It was cheaper to destroy them than to ship them back to Japan.)

Bricklin almost made the same mistake recently importing the Chery cars from China!

  • @kaptainkidshow I was just reading about this car in the book about the Yugo The Rise and Fall of the Worse Car This Subaru was imported by Bricklin the same guy that imported the Yugo. They got around safety laws with the 360 because it weighed less than 1000 lbs and the USA Safety laws only applied to vehicles more than 1000 lbs. Technically it was a motorcycle. I believe the original 360 was 1500 lbs but they reduced the weight to get under the wire

  • ring ding ding ding

  • @kaptainkidshow not exactly correct as i've owned probably 7 of these little beauties since the early 70's. there were approx. 15 subaru dealers in southern PA, NJ, DE, and MD. they all got them. some titled as 69's, more as 70 leftovers. 25HP vertical twin 2-stroke, oil injected, slow as molasses, brakes tough to maintain, but fun to drive. a decent one right now sells for around $4000. that's what i got for my last one, 3 years ago

  • Comment removed

  • @midatlanticcycle I stand corrected. Thanks for the info!

  • There was a dealership not too far from my home in North Carolina that sold these. I believe the sticker said they went for like $1,299.00 at the time. My dad loved these and got him started on Subaru. Remember the BRAT?

  • @midatlanticcycle: I'd like to buy one just to watch it perform.................I'm only 5'9 so hopefully I'll fit okay.

  • @kaptainkidshow: Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for these little gems, despite being a diehard muscle car fan..........I know, it's a contradiction of sorts, right? ;-p

    Did these cars even make it west of the Rockies, btw?{I live in the Lone Star State}

Anyway, it's a real shame that 1,000s had to be trashed.............the safety standards should've been for the big 3 only :-(.

  • @kaptainkidshow.... Not accurate...The dealer by my house in Westbury, New York had these for $1297 in 1969..They sat there the years, finally rusting away..My friend and I picked up the front end off the ground when we were 13 years old..NO JOKE !! The dealer guy chased us away, joking that we would have to buy the car..Sorry I didn't buy one !!!

  • Look at the jacking on that swing-arm rear suspension! And on the last shot in the Super Sport segment, does it look like the left front wheel is falling off one of the cars?

  • Give a DATSUN 510!

  • What a Car!

  • HOLY CRAP ! An ad where they say their car is ugly ! hahahahahahaha

  • O man I love subies. The lil 360 series look like toy cars, they must of flipped over so many times...

  • Pictures at an Exhibition! Subaru Style!

  • ha ha new way to say subaru. Sue Bar ru.

i alway say Soo Ba Roo. gotta love subaru's. i love my XT6

  • All kinds of people are driving them.... midgets, dwarves, children!

What a cute piece of crap.

  • HAHAHA!!! "Storage Space.... STANDARD!!"

    Thanks for posting this :)

  • all these yearsi've been pronounceing it su-BA-ru and it's really su-BAR-u...
