Came here to find out if it's easy to rebuild a rotary engine (thinking of buying an FB RX7 which looks pretty tired), ended up watching all your videos on this car so far.
Subscribed since I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out - thanks for all your videos!
Love the videos, I recently got an N/A 86 RX7 and your vids about rebuilding the engine has made me a little less concerned. Are there any other vids on the Rotary engine that you would suggest anyone to check out?
@DizzyTheSuccubus I don't think there are any as detailed as my rebuild video. Definitely check out parts 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8 of my Cosmo build for more engine work.
@DarkPrince013 Far as I know the Cosmo was only sold as the RX-5 and the Cosmo. I think the piston version was the 121. As for the videos, I have been working hard but since this is auto show season and I just got back from vacation, I also have not done much in the past 2 weeks. I intend to finish ALL the front end sheet metal in the next video because I'm sure everyone wants to move onto something else (I sure do).
Dude! u r a rotary genius!... 1 video of swapping a fd engine will be the greatest contribution for any fd owner on the world... specially for those who aren't experienced mechanics...
@jonathan300985 That's not part of my Cosmo project, so it won't be in this video series. It's also likely not something I'll ever produce because I don't own an FD and don't plan to.
@MrKlemensas I cannot say for sure. I'd like to wrap up all the front end sheet metal and be done with sheet metal episodes, so it may be to months before I release another video. This is a busy time of year for me with car shows, birthdays, and a vacation. :-)
@MrKlemensas But on the plus side, it will be the last sheet metal episode for a while! As soon as the engine bay metal work is done, the engine goes in for mockup and I start with the FUN fabrication.
@mx3sleeper It will be a little while yet because I still need to do the engine bay metal work and then paint it. The inner fender areas need to be all repaired and welded up before i can think about painting the bay.
@mx3sleeper However I'm pushing hard (that's what she said) for the front end metal work to be done by the end of March so that the fun stuff can begin in the spring. Oh and probably only one more highlu summarized sheet metal episode.
I love the intro, very 70s Japan: もしや。。。コスモだよ (well...it's a Cosmo, you know)
How satisfying to blast it back to clean bare metal. You must be very eager to get that rust fixed so you can paint it and get the engine back in. Please keep posting these videos, they're great!
@cbkidder Do you know the meaning of the Japanese in the intro? If so, can you translate and post it? I'm hoping that within 2 months I'm done the metal work to the point I can get the engine back in and then start the fun stuff.
@cbkidder Excellent. Thank you, as I've been trying to figure it out for a year. The last line is easy, the prior lines are much more difficult for someone unfamiliar with Japanese.
@Julzilla Last year I was blasting my RX-7 diff in the alley beside the shop, so some crackhead called the fire department because they thought the dust was smoke and that I was "lighting something big". The firemen were not amused but said "Nothing wrong with blasting". Turns out one was restoring a Mustang so I later blasted a box of parts for him.
Ok, on a more serious note - I'm pondering the same setup for my garage restoration. How well did it work to keep the media out of your shop? I need to keep my media out of my garage to keep my wife off my ass. I've also been thinking of hooking up an HVAC filter to a box fan to try and keep the dust in the "ghetto booth" to a minimum. Nice idea on the hood. Did you also wear a respirator under the hood?
@davemiii It worked fairly well but the fine dust is going to escape unless you can set up a large negative pressure or get a LOT of airflow through. There wasn't much media spread around the shop (a little) but there was a thick coat of dust. It just blows off and then can be swept up even though it looks like a massive mess. It's hard to avoid creating some kind of big mess when media blasting. I didn't wear a respirator under the hood because there was enough airflow to keep the nasty out.
"It's about that time in the day where one starts to get tired of their crazy extended family.." Man you got that right! Back from the in-lawns and I got my adult beverage (some Glenlivet) and the laptop all ready to watch some Cosmo goodness. Hey I wonder if they named the drink after that car? Aww yeah you KNOW they probably did
@puafia Normally that's what one would do. I didn't do this basically due to lack of space, and that I'm only one person that can only work on one area of the car at a time. Plus, once blasted, the entire vehicle would need to be epoxy primed which I just don't have the space for. The front end will be the last major blasting. Then every other panel will be stripped (chemically or mechanically) and primed one by one as I get to them.
@Jx1x3 Oh yes, if you're not wearing a protective suit, you'll find media everywhere including the butt crack. It gets blown through the fabric of most clothes quite easily.
