Back then the thing was how great a player you were, not who had the biggest tits or who sported the largest package or who could dress like the biggest slut
( though there were some of those they were compartmentalized, not the mainstream line of music city BS.
The amazing thing is that what you are hearing is ONE "multi timbral" (many voiced) instrument. An Ensoniq EPS vintage MIDI synthesizer being "triggered" by the performances of the band on their own MIDI enabled "controller" instruments. Granted these guys are ultra-pro skilled, but not bad sounding for a 1980's vintage single instrument, ya think?
man, if you had a vid of people doing frisbee trick to this!!! A buddy of mine at Penn State on the Ultimate Frisbee team -- '80 Pryor Hendrix RIP got me into the Dregs @ Penn State. Killer tune, whew!!! the days of boomboxes and tapes... lol IF you wanna freestyle, spray the disc bottom w/silicone spray and have a fingernail to spin it on. ohhh practice!
Have an old LP with the faster, tighter version, unfortunately well played and has a few crackles now. But I remember that I had heard it on the Saturday Rock show originally......
Here in the UK, a variation on the album version was the main theme to our "Friday Rock Show" when I was at school. Many an evening started and ended listening to thisgreat times ;-)
Great days, how lucky we were! You must be around the same age as me....Probably was the FRS, I used to tape the Saturday one, ,,, just finished going through all my ancient cassettes of the 70's and 80's BBC rock shows, surprised to find many recordings available on youtube and other places on the internet.. Keep well.... Colin B.
Listening to this I'm 15 again, lying in bed on a Friday night listening to the Friday Rock Show on my ITT Pony tranny. Tinny as hell, but it still sounded fantastic.
Listening to it, I could hear the late great tommy vance talking over it and welcoming us the the Friday rock show.
The man was a legend.
RIP

The performance of this piece on the 1999 Deep Purple concerto CD is breathtakingly brilliant.

@philboswell. I agree completely. I wonder if like me you taped the whole show every week. Tommy Vance was the voice back then

One of the very best prog-rock songs in history. Remeinds me of KANSAS. Steve played for that band for awhile, too.

is it just me or is this version slower than the original?

You're right, it's a slower version. I started listening to it and thought WTF? :0)

Thanks for your comment HairyBosch.
I have a couple of 'Friday Rock Shows', circa 1980 archived on open reel tape played on a Revox B77 tape deck no less.....! They never seem to age.

Respect! when i was a young kid I'd sneek the radio on and hear this show :-)
I dont suppose there's any chance you could make an mp3 of an old Rock Show recording and put it on megaupload... :-)
