this is totally sustainable, they know what they're catching and what's getting through to the spawning grounds and they know what's being put back in, they take measurements of the stock, calculate a quota and that's what the fisherman get, no more, no less.
@lazerbaconpro no, you are, a lot has changed since the 50's, set quotas are the way to go, most fisheries have stabilized and some are actually rebounding to a huge extent. the fisheries are not the problem, it's the pollution and habitat destruction that are impacting the most at the moment.

@natureperson420 you're so funny. they're commercial fisherman on a huge boat. they have an ice cold and a person puts them on ice and shovels ice onto them with a snow shovel. When the ice hold is full, they go to shore to the fish house where the fish are unloaded. Even seen canned salmon at a grocery store? You're looking at it in this video.

If you want to see crazy catches, this is nothing. Look into pollock factory ships, they catch fish and pull them in nets that gather them into tubes about 12'x12'x 100 yds long of solid fish. BTW, i agree AK fisheries are sustainable and one of the best managed anywhere. What a lot of people might not know also is that much of it is hatchery released fish, not wild stocks. The number of fish that go out each year is regulated.. ...now the numbers that make it back is another story.

Those fish sell for roughly 50 to 80 cents a pound at the dock. Round hauling is a pretty shitty way to treat fish. That's why we get so little cash for fish in the Bay. Unfortunately it is sometimes absolutely necessary.
XD kind have to agree on the lower quality fish, but not because of roundhauling, it's teh iceing situation and cleaning and such...now i've never fished up there but from what i've heared the ice is minimal and so the fish aren't kept up too well. I fish down in SE and we get about 3-3.50 a lb for ours cleaned and iced well, so 2 ppl can make about 10,000 in 2 days fishing sockeye, but when the volume's there, yah gotta do what yah gotta do.
