in a world of endless musical commercialisation I always wonder if I have to escape into abstract art to escape all that blandness. Richard reminds me how much you can do with three chords, a voice and an acoustic guitar - if you are inspired and if you understand how great a knowledge and value is hidden in traditional folk music. That's music which brings you at peace with yourself - invaluable!
@ theturniing of the tide Ohh, it is famous!! Every artist, some great great, some wannabes, cut their teeth on this song! It definitely separates the wheat from the chaff. But nothing beats the original creators with their original creation!
Unbelieveably I only discovered this song 4 days ago on the A. Krauss album, which in it's self is beautiful. Sitting proudly in the top 50 songs I have heard. Some other great versions to found on youtube, so check them out. Love songs don't get much better.
Isn't it wonderful? Love is mindless, without pride, without protection. We, like children, all need unconditional love at the "dimming of the day". Children ask for it without shame. Adults pay songwriters to express their feelings. Still adults and children meet in the feeling place through the arts.
No wonder we pay "entertainers" such enormous sums of money! Rock on!!
I came across this album around '79, the dark secrets of the lyrics are tainted in Haggis....they are transposed to Scots....simply because R & L are Scots by blood.
I came here for solace and healing...and intention to share with those close to me who also need some words like these in their heads to help them understand there is nothing wrong with grief and raw honest feelings and expression.
Thanks 'meloncholyrose99' ...(I like your YT name immensely).
what makes this song even more heartbreaking is the likelihood that richard wrote this while thinking of his lover, but linda is singing this with richard in mind
In the mid-70s I used to sit in front of a window looking down over San Francisco and listen to this album over and over and over. Hearing this song again after all these years brings back both wonderful and painful memories.
Richard Thompson is one of the best song writers ever to grace the planet and Linda was the perfect voice for his songs. Together they were musically magical.
A better love song may exist, but I haven't had the pleasure of listening to it, lately anyway, R. & L. Thompson are as good as it gets, and "Dimming Of The Day" constitutes a major share of their finest hour! God Save The Thompsons!
I love this song every time I hear it. I've heard many artists cover this but none compares to the original sung by then husband and wife Richard and Linda Thompson. Deep longing for connection to one another is what we all seek in our lives, this song typifies it for me. It's one of the few songs that I deeply cherish, not merely enjoy, you know....one of your life's songs. Thanks so much for the upload.
So poignant.....it's also performed in indie director John Sayles movie "Limbo", a truly great movie ( speaking of under appreciated artists), thanks for posting it, Hilfri1
Thanks - my favorite version of this amazing song. Linda is singing baritone here - amazing... Great lyrics and voices, harmony. Love the banjo, too...
The best recording ever done of this song. Absolutely beautiful notes and lyrics. This song touches me at my core. Always gives me goosebumps. One of the best songs ever written and one of my most favorites of all time.
This one of the best songs that has ever been written. RT and LT knock it out of the park on this one. This song is like getting thwonked on the head by a big box of hungry souls. Some of their (or anybodys) best work, and more importantly, a reason not write off the craptacular 70s. Oh how I love these guys.
@ronkopald I totally agree with your assessment of this song. It is one of my all time favourites, too beautiful for words. I shade my head and wonder why it is not more famous.
@ronkopald I agree about R.&L. T., but not about "craptacular 70's", IMO musicologists will someday look back at the 70's as the actual birth of the Rock ERA! Listen to Pink Floyd, 10CC, The Move, Rod Stewart, Cat Stevens, and the early version of Dire Straits, and that's only some of The Brit side of The Atlantic! We Americans were also well represented, but time will not allow me to list them now!
Perfect

Alison Krauss's version is awesome, but my favorite is David Gilmour's from his Meltdown concert!

Such a beautiful rendition and the sentiment expressed brings to mind a profound quote by Khalil Gibran.
"And ever has it been known that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation." x
