@briancampbell1996 There is an option when you upload a video to choose a frame as a thumbnail picture or to upload a picture completely unrelated or un(shown/contained/used) in the video. :)
It does a lot of good, but it does make it harder to tailor your image to the audience, In real life, you may be a moderate and have friends all over the spectrum on some hot button issue, and you avoid insulting them by tailoring your remarks to whoever is present. The creator of Facebook might think that disingenuous, but if he does, he's a pinhead. Tact is a moral good, and arbitrarily equating it with deceit is just immature.

there isnt even a need to upload a profile picture or write interests. that is only for those who are seeking approval from others or are trying to make new "friends". if they will actually become friends is a whole different thing
i've always been sort of against social networks and only started using facebook after someone made me an account.
after using it, i've realized that social networks are dangerous in many ways but none the less it is also a social TOOL. i use it to communicate and organize things with my friends such as outtings and also, to keep in touch with those that get to see less often in order to be able to see then afterwards. about what you were saying about defining ourselves, ->
you say we have been forced to define are self publicly as a bad thing ..... my friend your on YouTube in away YouTube is a similar format to Facebook in that its a way to publicly send out messages but I dont think there the same YouTube is brilliant for talent and ideas and opinions but so is Facebook look at the effect it has had in Libya. I do think people slowly do become more dependent on Facebook but one day it will go the way of to dodo like myspace but youtube will live on lol

I think it's good when it's not abused. Some people go on it way much (like I used to) which I think defeats the purpose. I believe if you use it wisely to get people together and interact with them, it can be a good thing.
If it wasn't for facebook and twitter I wouldn't be able to talk to my friends from when I go camping, my friend who moved to another country or the friends who live very far away. It's only a bad thing when used badly
@Matt4Badgers I hate using the phone so no, I don't do that (at least not very often), written letters have become obsolete (Why wait for for a letter when I can just log onto Facebook and inbox them?) and as for going to visit them... financially, I'm simply not capable of traveling interstate. I mean, I only see my brother who lives interstate once a year when he comes up for his birthday, so please don't say anything when you don't understand the situation.
Facebook is necessary to me... for a lot of my friend's who have moved away, it is the only form of contact I have with them. If I didn't have Facebook, I'd have lost contact with them entirely, so I'm very grateful to social networking for that.
I recently gave up FB for YT and G+. I felt like people had stopped viewing me as a person, and more as a status update....including myself. With YT and G+, I feel like a human being. Also, weird as it is to say, it feels less over-exposure-y to post videos than it does to maintain a FB. I always sort of felt like I was being stalked on FB, and I didn't like it much. Social Networking has it's levels.
Thing is I don't go on Facebook. I have an account but I haven't used it in almost a year. So I am most likely to be one of the many sane people who don't use Facebook. (not saying that most face bookers are aren't sane)
I think it would be a good idea you answer a short yes or no question or just not so controversial question once per video so we do not stay with the doubts we have like these one and besides do the video just a suggestion
@Mindstormscreator Yes, it makes you a zombie if you obey that blindly. It doesn't make you one if you listen to what he says, think on it critically and make a choice based on your thoughts too.
@Mindstormscreator pfft, conformist!, i actually follow what he is saying instead of not following what he is saying, making me not follow him by following him.. duh..
i find that often the people that complain about facebook and 'social networking dangers' are the ones that either arent allowed to have it, dont hav a lot of friends or are socially awkward already..
yeah social networking may be unnecessary but it can do great good for example i met my girlfriend through youtube an di have now been with her almost 6 months =/ so it aint all bad
FACEBOOK, to me, has replaced email. It's not a way for me to meet NEW people but a place for me to keep in touch with people I already know and just feel like keeping up to date with things about my life...normally people I CAN'T see on a regular basis. YouTube is a way for me to meet new people...but I don't DEPEND on YouTube to make friends...and Twitter is just a place for my subconscious to talk...so for ME...it's a good thing...not the most important thing however.
Dan, I agree with this, up to a point, when you talk about the phone, I think this zombie-like-ness wasn't cause because of the price of speaking over a phone line, whereas Internet being relatively free (considering you will pay for it, whether there are social networks or not) people will tend to use it more.

it's easier for people to communicate on the internet because we don't have to put our emotions into it as we do when we actually speak to each other. this means we don't have to "put ourselves out there" and expose ourselves to people not like us or our ideas as much. also, people don't practice talking as much and that's why teens mumble so much. sounds funny but it's true.
I seriously hate facebook. My girlfriend just got home and she went directly to the computer, telling me she hadn't checked her facebook for a while. The thing is that she was gone the whole weekend, and she probably checked facebook more than once during that time, whereas we hadn't met for quite some time. fml
i think social network is fine, but some people just don't know how to break loose from it. and those people happen to be like all my best freinds! they bring their laptops everywhere, like everywhere. not cause we might need internet on our roadtrip or when we take trip abroad, but cause they need to update facebook, twitter etc and a smart phone apparently isn't enough. i'm getting so frustrated that 2/3 of the time we spent together they're looking at a screen of some sort.....
I kinda like that your videos aren't as popular now as they were before. It makes me feel like a hipster. But I feel sorry for you, it is, in matter of fact, your job.
Ive had some bad things happen to me in real life.. and when i went online when i was 12 years old.. i had no real friends before or after that time.. i became an internet adict.. without the internet i cant socialise.. and i would like to change it.. but at the same time i love the internet.. my family have never been close to me.. so real friends and family are not important to me.
@Dodge5278 i dont wnat to.. im too afraid.. so its better for me.. until i can get the help i need from a proffessional or until i get over the fear..
I know this has nothing to do with facebook wuth what im about to say but i seen the rubiks cub videos and iv been wanting to see you do some yoyo tricks
Facebook having 750 million users is sort of a lie... Many people have made multiple accounts and there are also people who have deleted their accounts, but FB is a scam and doesn't really allow the deletion of an account...
Dan, you seem to believe that the pros of something tend to outweigh the cons of something (at least in recent videos). What are some things you think have cons that outweigh the pros?
Facebook is stupid if u want to keep in touch with someone get their email, cell number watevs if u like spending time with that person dont lose touch! it's that simple... besides YOUTUBE IS SOOO AWESOMER (which is a word... in my dictionary)!!!!!!
@beaniebaby3s3 That isn't always so simple. I have an entire family clear over in Australia, while I live in the United States. With facebook I can quickly (and for free) share photo's, live chat, send offline messages, play games with, and just overall easily keep in touch with them.
The seductive thing about online relationships is that you can find people who act and think just like you, or who want to watch your videos, because you have so many people around the world to choose from. Real life, where we are restricted to a small geographical area doesn't usually provide that.
I don't think democracy is 'invented'. It's acted out. Like, nobody 'invented' the potato, someone just named it that. P.S. Pirates are the greatest democratic force ever :) Jus' sayin'.
From the view of a highschooler I (personally) feel that social social networking provides quick and easy interaction used for organizing irl events and so on. Also, it exposes you in a way to a wider array of people outside of your friend or classmate zone. It does have some negative points, but I won't get into that.
has anybody heard about the law case that an irish person has put on facebook. he wants an age check (passport) when you singe up. i was told that facebook could be shut down. dose anybody know if it has gotten further
I agree with your assessment, the benefits do outweigh the cons overall though there is an issue (I've seen it with my younger siblings) where they don't really know how to interact with people in person and as a result don't hang out with their friends that much.
I frequently took my younger sister with me to hang out with my friends because she and her friends simply didn't 'do' that. Their thing was all online or via texting. It was weird, but it seemed to work for them regardless.
@Matt4Badgers At the time I first started noticing this behavior she was 14. I have not been home in about a year now but last I checked it had not changed. She is currently 17.

do you know a group of hackers called anonymous (the one who hacked psn) said that they are going to hack facebook on 5th of november? any comments? or is this just a hoax?
I think social networks are great as long as people aren't addicted and their life doesn't revolve or get ruined by it. It should never replace meeting up with your friends and I think at least a telephone call would be better than facebook chat...
So I just had surgery and post about on facebook. And not twenty four hours later people I not talk to in a year messaged me and asked for my leftover pain meds. So yeah not really a fan of facebook and it complete openness.
I like the idea of social networking but I find that it does invade privacy too much. There is no way to keep different parts or your life apart if they all link together on things like facebook (especially with other programs linking to facebook too) and so you dont get this difference between your private life and your public life because everyone can see straight into your private life. This can create some very awkward situations.
I had a girl like 9 pictures of mine on facebook yesterday afternoon and 6 o'clock that night we were playing ddr at the arcade and hanging out in the mall and getting ice cream. By 8 o'clock I was absolutely certain I'd made a very good friend.
All of this occurred because she knew one of my friends, but not irl, but only through facebook.

i have a fecebook page, i do not care how many friends i have or whatever, iv'e thought of erasing it several time but i have not make it because for what i use is is really helpfull
share videos with close friends ( if i want to talk to them i'll just call them)
and keep on touch for whats up with my favorite bands
it's extremely irritating to hang out with friends who just can't look away from their fucking cellphones, you have to compete with their attention cos they're too busy staring at their cell phone, texting, BBM'ing, tweeting, posting stupid pictures on facebook.
I think that people spend to much time on these websites, they are fantastic but I think there needs to be a balance between in person meetings and FB meetings. I believe it should lean strongly towards the in person meetings because people can have other side-effects from staying inside to long. Physical and mentally.
I love the internet, but is technology pulling us away from our human nature? Are attention spans the first casualty? Are we developing new generations that don't know how to have a face to face conversation without waiting for their turn to speak?
I used to think FB and YT were a waste of time but then I wrote a book and I didn't want to go through the publishing process (ok I was impatient) so I posted on FB on a fan site. All I can say is I love social networking. I love when readers respond, I love connecting with others all over the world and I love having full creative control.
Social networks have allowed artists to connect with each other and I believe it is these connections that are putting us on track to a better society.
I like social networks. Facebook gives me the chance to easily stay in in touch with my friends overseas whom I'd otherwise hardly ever get the chance to talk to. But of course facebook chat is nothing compared to meeting someone in person! Being active on social networks is great as long as that's not all social life you have.
I'm gonna disagree with Dan here... You probably don't see the 13, 14, and 15 year olds on Facebook. Most the people my age (in my experience) are so reclusive and don't know how to have a conversation that doesn't take place online.
When you're in a long distance relationship and also have friends from all around the world you've never met, the way I do, you must be very addicted to social networking, as you lack of alternative (tho you obviously know the alternative would be better).
I agree with Dan and I think any dependance on social networking that people may have now will fade soon. It's still a novelty to most of us but like the phone once was but when that wears off it will just become another part of our lives. I think social networks need to work with each other though instead of everybody just using Facebook so that consumers have choice. I would love if I could interact with Facebook friends using Google+
Facebook made me like my friends less. Like, a lot less. And not just a few, probably like 90% of them. This trended with even some of my closest friends (only one, but that's some when you have four, right?)
Like you said, social networking's a positive force in the world, except when some goddamn friend keeps sharing his farmville achievements with everyone.
dan, i completely agree with everything you say. with that said, this comment is just spam. please stop reading it. look, you're just wasting your time reading this.

I kinda like that your videos aren't as popular now as they were before. It makes me feel like a hipster. But I feel sorry for you, it is, in matter of fact, your job.
Keep up the good work!

Facebook having 750 million users is sort of a lie... Many people have made multiple accounts and there are also people who have deleted their accounts, but FB is a scam and doesn't really allow the deletion of an account...
Commenter339 5 months ago
It's just a distraction.
Not to say that sites like Facebook, Google and other major companies stores your information, web history, personal files and other personal stuff.
I really doubt they use this for "research".

Dan, you seem to believe that the pros of something tend to outweigh the cons of something (at least in recent videos). What are some things you think have cons that outweigh the pros?

Facebook is stupid if u want to keep in touch with someone get their email, cell number watevs if u like spending time with that person dont lose touch! it's that simple... besides YOUTUBE IS SOOO AWESOMER (which is a word... in my dictionary)!!!!!!
beaniebaby3s3 5 months ago
@beaniebaby3s3 That isn't always so simple. I have an entire family clear over in Australia, while I live in the United States. With facebook I can quickly (and for free) share photo's, live chat, send offline messages, play games with, and just overall easily keep in touch with them.

I recently deactivated my facebook account cause I felt I was spending to much time on it. Now I just spend more time on youtube.

DreamBladeStudios 5 months ago

I agree with your assessment, the benefits do outweigh the cons overall though there is an issue (I've seen it with my younger siblings) where they don't really know how to interact with people in person and as a result don't hang out with their friends that much.
I frequently took my younger sister with me to hang out with my friends because she and her friends simply didn't 'do' that. Their thing was all online or via texting. It was weird, but it seemed to work for them regardless.

I think social networks are great as long as people aren't addicted and their life doesn't revolve or get ruined by it. It should never replace meeting up with your friends and I think at least a telephone call would be better than facebook chat...
BooMonsterOfficial 5 months ago
So I just had surgery and post about on facebook. And not twenty four hours later people I not talk to in a year messaged me and asked for my leftover pain meds. So yeah not really a fan of facebook and it complete openness.
isof69 5 months ago

Right now I really <3 facebook.

darkhero101010 5 months ago
it's extremely irritating to hang out with friends who just can't look away from their fucking cellphones, you have to compete with their attention cos they're too busy staring at their cell phone, texting, BBM'ing, tweeting, posting stupid pictures on facebook.
I think "awkward" is a polite way of putting it.

Zsmart 5 months ago
I don't like telephone conversations. As a result, I barely have them and I'm not too great at them either. I need visual feedback.
DaTux91 5 months ago
I used to think FB and YT were a waste of time but then I wrote a book and I didn't want to go through the publishing process (ok I was impatient) so I posted on FB on a fan site. All I can say is I love social networking. I love when readers respond, I love connecting with others all over the world and I love having full creative control.
Social networks have allowed artists to connect with each other and I believe it is these connections that are putting us on track to a better society.
HazelKeats 5 months ago
I like social networks. Facebook gives me the chance to easily stay in in touch with my friends overseas whom I'd otherwise hardly ever get the chance to talk to. But of course facebook chat is nothing compared to meeting someone in person! Being active on social networks is great as long as that's not all social life you have.

@danclyde12 What do you need 50(!!!) accounts for? O_O
idobelieveinnargles 5 months ago
Facebook is good for people who already socialise often in the real world.
The people who just browse the feed, see what others have been up to - they don't actually participate in the conversation.
So while they get some amount of connection with others, others won't get anything from the so called 'zombies'.
That's one of the most real problems of online social networks
dinamiss 5 months ago
I'm gonna disagree with Dan here... You probably don't see the 13, 14, and 15 year olds on Facebook. Most the people my age (in my experience) are so reclusive and don't know how to have a conversation that doesn't take place online.
nowinterweather 5 months ago
When you're in a long distance relationship and also have friends from all around the world you've never met, the way I do, you must be very addicted to social networking, as you lack of alternative (tho you obviously know the alternative would be better).
vampirica89 5 months ago
I agree with Dan and I think any dependance on social networking that people may have now will fade soon. It's still a novelty to most of us but like the phone once was but when that wears off it will just become another part of our lives. I think social networks need to work with each other though instead of everybody just using Facebook so that consumers have choice. I would love if I could interact with Facebook friends using Google+
