@davidthe1 Really dry wood in small pieces, the right kind of wood and wich one depends on where you live and what grows there. Those are the key things in opens fires inside tents, tipis, woodshelters and so on. And the right structure of the shelter is important to have correct airflow to bring smoke and gas out, I am no expert in this but the simple explanation is you have to create a draft från the door to the top so the smoke is forced out
@SSanf the fire lives in a pit,at night you use a different type fire than you would for say normal day cooking chores, avoiding quick burning woods, the pit ideally should be rock lined, extra rocks can be added to provide heat for the night,a fire with a layer of ash will burn slower,so the main night fire is embers and rocks
@SSanf if there is more than one of you,you can maintain a fire watch, only one person sleeps, the other tends the fire, then every two hrs or so change over..
@wolfbushcraft In that case, you need to take an old person with you. The elderly stay awake all night and take naps during the day, anyway. That probably was the evolutionary advantage of humans living past the age needed to rear their young to sexual maturity. More offspring of those who became elderly survived because the old people, the fire tenders, watched over their safety at night.
Take an old person camping and you may all be more comfortable.
@mythic89 you use dry wood to stop smoke,if its damp strip off the bark, did you see any smoke?,creepy crawlies rarely go inside if its used and a fire is going on inside, you can clean it out with herbs etc before use..yes ive spent many nights in it last winter and plan to do so again this winter..i dont play bushcraft i do it.
@wolfbushcraft i have been wondering if you can use an arizona fire pit in a shelter to reduce smoke if the fire pit is inside and the hole brings air into the bottom of the fire inside the shelter. any thoughts on this would be appreciated
@ncbookz yes its a good setup, you can control air direction by adding flaps over the holes, can be open or shut, depending on wind direction, dig small ditches leading away from the fire, circular ,4 should do
@wolfbushcraft OK, I found 5 videos when searching for "earth lodge". Could you make a play list presenting them in order? Of those 5, 3 were labeled "earth lodge" which isn't much help in watching the progress from beginning to end. A play list would also help because I never would have thought to search for the term "earth lodge". I would have been searching for "shelter" or something similar. I know it doesn't probably seem to you that you have gotten all that big but you really do have a lot
@mem7048 i have no idea, sorry,it has a large back sleeping area, infront of that my seat and back rest, woodpile, and areas around the shelter where i can keep things off the ground,a hearth also with a large tripod for cooking smoking etc..hope this helps..
I would only imagine the smoke would help drive the critters out. Do you have a problem with spiders, insects and small mammals in a shelter like that?
damn thats a real nice setup man! :o when it gets cold and i still want to stay the night 'outside' in the wilderness somewhere i just try to find a cave or abandoned building or something :D (of which i usually know b4 that they are in the area then)
It blends into the woods real nice, and I don't think anyone will see it from the air.and anyone trucking alone will have to get close to it to see it...Great Job....
We have been burning wood here in Montana since July.....Take Care!

@davidthe1 If you do it wrong, yes. But people all over the world have open fires inside their shelters and homes and it works fine.

Why doesn't it catch the shelter on fire and turn you into a crispy critter? Is the fire dead out when you go to sleep?

What are the interior dimensions? This looks nice and roomy, and yet fairly easy to heat! Great job man.
