I'm estimating here, the Sail Rocket cost $25,000 and the Hydroptere cost $250,000. Two different forms of investment. One the average person can afford, the other beyond.
A good healthy and worthy competition. Nice crash scene. I'm wondering if the rocket had hydroplaning fins would that help it reduce the pounding and water coeffient or area of hydrodynamic drag (lift the boat out of the water more than skimming it). But don't worry about me...I'm not the "rocket" scientist. Yeah, I know it was a bad pun, you can give me a thumbs down if you like (please don't, I was just kidding).
@guitarsquiddy you should take up your complaint with the World Speed Sailing Record Council. Just because it can't tack and gybe doesn't mean it's not a boat. That's like saying a drag racer isn't a car
sailrocket has the ugliest name and it cannot handle really heavy winds, therefore the sailrocket is a joke and 'tis inferior to l'hydroptere

Fast, but ugly as hell. I hope sailboats developments don't go that way.

all they need to do is put hydrofoils on that boat and it will beat the record

The big difference between sailrocket and hydroptere is that hydroptere is supposed to be able to cross an ocean . It's not just a speed machine.

Cool video. Fast and dangerous sport.

If a drag you around kite can a hold a speed sailling record, this boat should have no issues ,at least it has a sail and mast.Good luck

Sorry, but this is not a sailboat anymore. It has no maneuverability to speak of. Hydroptère was an actual boat that could do tacks and gybes.

What was the reason for the accident, hydrofoil cavitation? The sail foil has no twist could that have been a factor?
