Firstly we have had no problems with it at our club and as a keeper it just adds another dimension to drills at training.
I use it on the outfield, to get the best out of it the thrower has to be on his knees skidding it off the surfac with a bit of effort, i can imagine people just throwing it onto the katchett with little effort getting rubbish bounce and dismissing it.
The problem is caused by the bottom of the katchet touching the grass below it. Its like trying to bounce a ball off a soft carpet. The grass acts as a shock absorber and the ball bounces less than 4 feet away. Even when you throw the ball quite hard it wont bounce any higher than 2 feet and wont travel more than 6 feet. We then tried it on the patio and it worked fine. However sometimes i missed and bounced the ball off the patio and it bounced just as good.
Just bought one of these and i cant begin to tell you how disappointing it is. Paid £50.00 inc carriage and its a complete waste of money. They work fine on a hard flat wicket where the grass is short. They are absolutely hopeless for use on the outfield. If the grass is more than an inch long you simply cant get the ball to bounce. As most clubs wont let you train on the wicket or anywhere near the square then its pointless having one.
These things are great fun, once you work out the correct technique!! Had a couple at our club for 2-3 years...
