I don´t see the problem here. Religion has nothing to do with politics, laws or education. To discuss that is just stupid. It shouldn´t be in the constitution at all. What people believe should stay in their homes. And as she said( but didn´t seem to understand " 95% of americans believe in SOME kind of christianity"...Isn´t that proof enough that he is right about that it should have anything to do with the constitution that is set for ALL of mankind? Just saying
Hahaha awesome. What's really sad though is that probably 90% of the viewers of this show didn't understand that he just completely obliterated her arguments.
@nnjhansen he quotes the constitution and she responds with american history? clearly she is just trying to rally patriotic christians to her side of the arguement with nonsense rather than legal evidence. as an attorney she should be ashamed to let her religion interfere with what is clearly a legal case, Michael repeatadly quotes law, not religion, or christianity for that matter.
@jawsboris72 And now that I have watched it this wasn't an interview or a debate, it was a bitch insulting a very well-mannered and thoughtful man for no reason. Anything on Fox wants to make me vomit.
I'm Australian. But fuck me sideways the founders of America would be pissed off. Religion and Deities have no place in government. They worked there arse off to make it that way!

She uses a technique called the 'Gish Gallop' to overwhelm the respondent with noise and make it seem as if her arguement is prevailing. Lots of debating christians use it, throwing out point after point from the bible - especially when they are rattled.
@Morbius1963 Orwell referenced something like this in 1984. Words that come from the larynx rather than the brain. Fortunately, any halfway intelligent person can see right through it.
@darkelf456 It's not in 1984, it's in his essay call Politics and the English language... 1984 is an extension of that to go beyond any sens of relief.
and actually, she had the better point at 4;50. the majority shouldn't bow to the minority. sorry, that's democracy. so the angry dork alludes to racism as though it's at all the same thing. The bimbo had a better point surprisingly and this guy is just a pissy little gadfly
@gimmethegepgun Segregation was ended because it violated the Constitution. Segregation ended with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It ended when the people through their elected representatives ended it.
@gimmethegepgun Brown did not end segregation and it relied on the 14th Amendment. which was also the result of the people acting through their elected representatives.
There is no tyranny in the voluntary recitation of a Pledge which acknowledges God.
@nnjhansen I'm not saying it's tyranny. It's unconstitutional, yes, but it's not far enough to be tyranny.
The guy I was talking to, however, said "the majority shouldn't bow to the minority. sorry, that's democracy." which IS outright defending tyranny of the masses.
The way we resolve public policy disputes in our system is at the ballot box or in our legislatures. Those means work on the principle of majority rules. There is no tyranny in that either.
@nnjhansen So if we were to collectively decide to, say, massacre all the jews because we had the majority of the country voting to, it wouldn't be tyranny then?
Oh, and it blatantly doesn't meet the first criteria of the Lemon test, meaning it's unconstitutional.
@gimmethegepgun That would be tyrannical but its tyrannical nature is not dependent on its popular support. It is tyrannical if one person decides to do it or 200 million.
The Lemon test is a legal fiction that not even the Supreme Court abides by. Nothing in the text or the history of the 1st Amendment suggests that the mere acknowledgment of God violates it.
@nnjhansen The tyranny of the majority does not refer to majority rule being inherently tyrannical, but that it, taken alone, easily leads TO tyranny.
Trying to work on a strict majority rule is what invokes it, and is WHY strict majority rule would never be used by anyone sane.
Though the Lemon test is not applied as much as it should be, it's still in effect and still counts as making things unconstitutional, as ruled by the S.C.
@gimmethegepgun At the end of the day, there is no system of government that is immune to tyranny. Our system has safeguards in place that sometimes require more than a simple majority but at the end of the day the people are sovereign. There is no check on the American people to formulate the rules under which we live.
As I said, the Lemon test is a legal fiction. It has no basis in the text or history of the Constitution. It exists to impose policy that judges may prefer.
@gimmethegepgun "The first principle of republicanism is that the lex majoris partis is the fundamental law of every society of individuals of equal rights; to consider the will of the society enounced by the majority of a single vote as sacred as if unanimous is the first of all lessons in importance, yet the last which is thoroughly learnt. This law once disregarded, no other remains but that of force, which ends necessarily in military despotism." -Thomas Jefferson
@Floodlezoot Google "tyranny of the majority" sometime, and note how that concept relates to your Bill of Rights. @ksungjin10 wrong. You'd be describing "apatheists", that is, doesn't know and doesn't care. Many atheists (like the ones that drew up the Constitution / Bill of Rights in the first place, though they'd only go as far as being self-described "Deists" - the fashion of the day) actually put some careful thought into the matter of how direct democracies (like short-lived Athens) could easily slip into dictatorships of the majority. democracyweb org / majority / principles.php
But why? they are all 'Gods'. The word 'God' is not reserved just for the Christian god. Allah is a god, budda is a god, zeus is a God. Whether you believe in one or none does not take away the definition of a 'God' and who or what it applies to (whether real or imaginary).
@1601tgc "budda [sic] is a god?" Durp. A clue for you... in mainstream (that is, non-folk) buddhism, there is no god. No "soul", either. Like the old buddhist koan relates: when the fire goes out, does it go north, south, east, or west?
@sqmuth so what, i'll take back the statement about buddha being a god. I am simply raising a point on the semantics of the word 'god or God'. If buddhist don't believe in a God hooray for them. Anyhoot the whole argument is a storm in a tea cup. I highly doubt anyone will become a 'believer' because of one line in the American oath of allegiance.
@1601tgc a step in the right direction, but a bit of a digression re: atheists (or theist civil libertarians for that matter) actually caring that a line in the pledge threatens to "convert" anybody. Frankly I'd never heard that argument before. The main issue, as I see it, is gov't endorsement of religion. There are side issues of harassment that falls out of this, and it's pretty clear that many commenters here never figured out the tyranny of the majority concept. Look it up.
@rickiex But why? they are all 'Gods'. The word 'God' is not reserved just for the Christian god. Allah is a god, zeus is a God. Whether you believe in one or none does not take away the definition of a 'God' and who or what it applies to (whether real or imaginary).
"Can you relate to the feeling of ostracism the parents of these children are worried about"
Yes! yes I can, because I am an atheist and have been since I was old enough to decide. And let me tell you, that leads to a feeling of ostracism in, say RE classes or in general when there is a predominate religious feeling in a group. So piss off.
Religion was once used to control people in a way and time that laws simply couldn't. People were once forced into believing god because the smartest of men knew that with out religion, people would be impossible to control and keep from killing each other. I'm not saying we need this now, but I just let religion slide because the belief in a higher power gives some people hope, and we just need to weed out the crazies and extremists.
The closest thing I have to a religious faith is the belief that people who think they have ultimate answers - be they christians, jews, or atheists - are wrong. We don't have ultimate answers and probably never will. That being said, the belief that Mr. Newdow "demolished" the other individual is just silly. Theists hear what they want to hear, but no more so than do atheists
What a fucking non-issue. If you don't want to fucking say it THEN DON'T FUCKING SAY IT. If you're an atheist then it doesn't even matter what the fuck you say. Pledge allegiance to the fucking spaghetti monster if you want to.
@TheSniperWelshCelt First of all, you're not getting what the question really is about at all. Second of all, did't the first chicken come from an egg? The whole point of the question is that it's an oxymoron. You can't possibly answer it.
@gimmethegepgun By the beard of Zeus... You're still missing my point. It's a saying that shows an oxymoron.
The mutation for a chicken as we know it today may have come in an egg, but something laid that egg, something resembling a chicken. It doesn't matter how you look at it, the question can't be answered.
What a total bitch. have you ever noticed that when debates such as these go on the person with religious beliefs always are on the offensive and the atheist's point of view is always well thought out with explanations
Actually Megyn, only 60% - 76% of the USA identify as Christian. Classic Fox news tactic: insert fallacious nuggets of misinformation into argument and cluck loudly about it.
Am I the only person who thinks the pledge is kind of stupid in and of itself. Regardless of the religious bullshit, you're still pledging your loyalty and devotion to a piece of freaking cloth above and beyond things like, friends, family, and country... I know it includes the phrase "... to the republic for which it stands," but that comes after the flag. I don't know; I just always found it kind of dumb.
@Dorkus89Malorkus Brilliant response do you write for The New Yorker? lol Honestly, while I agree that the three people you mentioned do come off as arrogant, the three people I mentioned come off as more arrogant, and atheism is less arrogant than the major religions... except maybe Buddhism.
@Dorkus89Malorkus Also, Mexico? Why not a more atheistic country like Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, or England? Why would I want to go to a country that is just as religious as the one, which I am poking fun at for being religious?
Why is the pledge being attacked on the basis of one phrase? Isn't it an even worse problem that kids are forced to say a pledge of ALLEGIANCE? How can kids reasonably pledge their allegiance to something?
god if ur going to have a debate at least don't put ur emotions into it, thats y i hate debating with females they always ruin it with their damm emotions. its obviously facts what he is saying that in the constitution, it cannot praise the idea of god existing or not existing, she just does not know wtf she is talking about, following the majority or the norm of the country does not make it right u stupid cunt lol, truth is not measured in mass appeal.
I'm an atheist and I hate the titles of all these youtube videos. It's always "destroys a moron", "smacks some sense into...", "Owns idiot creationist". It's disrespectful, it's unnecessary and it's wrong. Not all atheists are so arrogant or rude. It's just so immature and discredits the content.
@ksungjin10 It does make it easy to point out dumbasses but it also gives them something to abuse and try to apply to real life. In god we trust is on the american money and do you really want these people running your country? It causes alot more problems then anything. Its not only useless, its harmful to humanity.
So... I watched this video and they talk about God and stuff, but... am I the only one who thinks that it's FUCKING INSANE to make students recite a pledge of allegiance to the country? Who cares if there's the word "God" in it? Ban the damn pledge altogether! Damn morons and their exaggerated patriotism.
@WildSeven0079 So I'm NOT the only one thinking how stupid it is. Why should I have to pledge to a country I live in? It's just land. Sure, I'm grateful for the freedoms granted in the US Constitution, but even when I was a kid, I thought this kind of thing was creepy.
At least we're not actually pledging allegiance to the President...
@gotsda but to be fair to her, she *might* understand the concept of tyranny of by and for the teeming clods, personally. Clearly she's highly paid to undermine USAmerican representative democracy though, and by an Aussie, no less. For those not acquainted with the concepts of "direct" vs. "representative" democracy, and how and why protections were put in place in our Bill of Rights (which have since migrated to intnl law), a history lesson: democracyweb org / majority / principles.php
@Antifaith29 nor should you, I suppose. I guess he's an honorary American, now. I'd guess you've seen this already, but here goes: watch?v=n1aZcsY-O8Q
In the words of Benjamin Franklin "those that would trade liberty for some security deserve neither liberty or security". And they shall have neither. Keep watching the biased media, Live on fox and CNN, the death of the republic!
@p2eas3 ...... By the looks of your comment...? Did you not realize that your comment was not only irrelevant to the video, but it was also enough proof to think that you may not know what you were talking about? Unless you were being sarcastic, which would just be funny as hell.
@sneakyfellow I'll answer this I guess. I can't sleep. Fox news is always "mad back" their whole news organization is based on creating very aggressive angry debates to defend their side, and not actually every consider for a moment the other side is right. They are most viewed for two reasons. 1. Conservatives watch Fox while liberals watch CNN, NBC, ABC, (BBC & Al Jazeera too). 2. Drama is always better tv than news, and Fox is drama. Hot blondes, Glenn Beck crying, etc. Also ur gay.
I'm Scottish and also an atheist, I remember in school when I was young, they made everyone stand up in an assembly hall and sing church hymns every morning and afternoon. Thankfully, Scotland abolished this in public schools relatively recently (I'm not sure if all of Britain has abolished it) but certainly Scotland has along with much of the prosperous Northern Europe. Maybe Americans would stand to less ridicule around the world if they followed the rest of the developed nations on this.
I'm a strict Atheist, but I think this is a little overboard, and only makes the general Atheist look like jerks. I just say "under no one" when that part comes up.
@HHRoblox i agree, this is absolutely overboard, that Megyn thinks she can just yell over him and do her usual bullshit "i know what im talking about" when she actually doesnt know jack about it. Its overboard that just because she holds the majority position that she thinks she can just overrule the constitution because she wants to.
Is that loud mouth idiot Bill O'Reilly's daughter? The words "under god" were crowbarred into the "pledge" in 1954 so to say that people were saying it in the 1800s is another in a long line of Fox News lies to their gullible audience.
I'm surprised that Christians don't have a problem pledging allegiance to a flag. The Bible says you can't serve two masters.
I don´t see the problem here. Religion has nothing to do with politics, laws or education. To discuss that is just stupid. It shouldn´t be in the constitution at all. @ksungjin10 wrong. You'd be describing "apatheists", that is, doesn't know and doesn't care. Many atheists (like the ones that drew up the Constitution / Bill of Rights in the first place, though they'd only go as far as being self-described "Deists" - the fashion of the day) actually put some careful thought into the matter of how direct democracies (like short-lived Athens) could easily slip into dictatorships of the majority. democracyweb org / majority / principles.php

if you can say one nation under god, why cant i say one nation under budda? or... mormon god? or..the devil?
rickiex 1 day ago
But why? they are all 'Gods'. The word 'God' is not reserved just for the Christian god. Allah is a god, budda is a god, zeus is a God. Whether you believe in one or none does not take away the definition of a 'God' and who or what it applies to (whether real or imaginary).
1601tgc 1 day ago
@1601tgc "budda [sic] is a god?" Durp. A clue for you... in mainstream (that is, non-folk) buddhism, there is no god. No "soul", either. Like the old buddhist koan relates: when the fire goes out, does it go north, south, east, or west?
sqmuth 12 hours ago
@sqmuth so what, i'll take back the statement about buddha being a god. I am simply raising a point on the semantics of the word 'god or God'. If buddhist don't believe in a God hooray for them. Anyhoot the whole argument is a storm in a tea cup. I highly doubt anyone will become a 'believer' because of one line in the American oath of allegiance.
1601tgc 12 hours ago
@1601tgc a step in the right direction, but a bit of a digression re: atheists (or theist civil libertarians for that matter) actually caring that a line in the pledge threatens to "convert" anybody. Frankly I'd never heard that argument before. The main issue, as I see it, is gov't endorsement of religion. There are side issues of harassment that falls out of this, and it's pretty clear that many commenters here never figured out the tyranny of the majority concept. Look it up.

Cacolucia2 1 day ago
The closest thing I have to a religious faith is the belief that people who think they have ultimate answers - be they christians, jews, or atheists - are wrong. We don't have ultimate answers and probably never will. That being said, the belief that Mr. Newdow "demolished" the other individual is just silly. Theists hear what they want to hear, but no more so than do atheists

Krauserowns 16 hours ago
@Dorkus89Malorkus its called evolution through mutation.
the creature that lay the egg was not a chicken, but the genetics mutated withing the embryo which created the chicken...
TheSniperWelshCelt 16 hours ago
@TheSniperWelshCelt First of all, you're not getting what the question really is about at all. Second of all, did't the first chicken come from an egg? The whole point of the question is that it's an oxymoron. You can't possibly answer it.
Dorkus89Malorkus 15 hours ago
@Dorkus89Malorkus no you can answer it. it's the egg.
hjenkinz 14 hours ago
@Dorkus89Malorkus Any geneticist would answer that it's the egg, because mutations that define what a creature is occur before conception.
gimmethegepgun 10 hours ago
@gimmethegepgun By the beard of Zeus... You're still missing my point. It's a saying that shows an oxymoron.
The mutation for a chicken as we know it today may have come in an egg, but something laid that egg, something resembling a chicken. It doesn't matter how you look at it, the question can't be answered.
Dorkus89Malorkus 10 hours ago
@Dorkus89Malorkus That idiotic rhetorical question can be easily answered by genetics. Find a better oxymoron to use.

Jonstern1983 1 day ago
@Dorkus89Malorkus Also, Mexico? Why not a more atheistic country like Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, or England? Why would I want to go to a country that is just as religious as the one, which I am poking fun at for being religious?

@Jonstern1983 I wasn't talking about religion. I was talking about you dishonoring our flag.
