The harpsichord and some of the musical underpinnings are strangely reminiscent of some older British rock - maybe Stones "As Tears Go By" era. Do others agree or have a better fix on what songs these sound like?
Great stuff! I usually prefer a guitar & vocal only version, but you have augmented this very well and your vocal is excellent. You should come over to the Nick Drake gathering at Tanworth in Arden, where I grew up at the same time as Nick. A truly inspirational Warwickshire village.
Outstanding in all respects. There is a lot of good work out there on You Tube but so often it can fall a bit short on the vocals. You've nailed the vocals too. Congratulations. Top notch!
Wow. You sound like David Gilmour. I assume that's your own String arrangement and harpsichord? What software are you using to record, and which synth/patch did you use for the strings? Really beautiful job man.
Wow man, I really think this is one the best covers on anyone alive actually. You did everything perfect and probably better and that means a lot coming from me hahaha. But seriously, amazing job chap.
Your particular version of this song I think I prefer to Drakes. Your vocal suits it better with the Gilmore overtures and less discordant and loud cello.
Still a beautiful song by Nick though, you cant take that away from the man.
man your good how long you been playing and was it somewhat hard learning that i have a buddy who plays cello just wondering wanna do some covers together
i feel like the harpsichord is a subliminal royal tenenbaums reference, because mark mothersbraugh uses one in pretty much all of his scores. what guitar/mic are you using in this video?
MrPelicanPants, the point is that It looks that Dave has been "inspired" by Nick Drake in particular because of this song, Fly. When I listened this song for the first time I thought "this is David Gilmour"..
But it is not the only one, when I listened "Black Eyed Dog" for the first time I thought "This is Eddie Vedder".
And yes, excellent cover, but most his covers are equally great.
FooPerson, that was a beautiful comment, but your an idiot. It sounds like you focus on the negative rather than recognize how good this cover is. Your an idiot.
It's still a really good comment though! I really liked it...
Undeniably beautiful, but it all sounds TOO perfect. I mean there's nothing wrong with this, but I feel like you more focused on trying to copy the original recording rather than create your own interpretation of the song.
It's still really good though! I really like your voice...
this is the best cover of drake i've heard on the internet... this is so good i keep coming back to this one over the original... not to many times that happens
brilliant,i,ve just learnt using cgcfcf as the tuning(3rd fret capo),it just seems easier, and is the same as northern sky and rivermans tuning, but i prefere your cover, seems to me note perfect.
Thanks for your positive comments. If you haven't seen it yet I suggest you check out nickdraketabs dot com(replace dot with.),I think that site has the most accurate tunings and tabs for ND's songs
great videos mate, love 2 b able 2 sing and play like that, i'll tune in every now and then and make an attempt, unique style nick drake had, a lot of practice needed i guess.
Thanks again Liam for all your positive comments.I do play gigs here in the NYC area and I try to slip in a Nick song or 2 when I can but I don't often get the opportunity.
brilliant guitar playing. and the voice, you have a good voice- but you should sing in your natural accent. I meran, your american right? but your putting on drakes home counties accent.
Only heard this song today (missed out on Nick Drake when he was alive, somehow). Will have to get to grips with the tuning. Your version is beautiful, lovely guitar work.
Reproducing someone else's work - as amazingly accurate as you do - is hard work, but all the fun of making a song and shaping it into a work of art is already done for you. I would be saddened to know that all the talent and the excellent singing voice you have is not put to use creating new works of art.
Thanks very much for your positive comments.I don't write as much as I used to and even then it would mostly be in collaboration as I'm not a lyricist. But at some point I may sit down and write something instrumental to post. And doing these "close" covers is actually fun and also instructive both as a musician and recording engineer, you learn quite a bit about the song and the artist by trying to match the sound and feel of each track in an arrangement.
this is fantastic, i have been trying to nail this one for ages......i can do the picking no problem but i struggle with the phrasing of the lyrics.........you have it spot on and sound exactly like Nick, he would be delighted with your performance i'm sure...........keep posting
Hey,thanks again for all your positive comments...I have to admit it's been quite a while since I sat down and tried to write something of my own and even back when I was doing it more frequently it was always in collaboration with a lyricist/singer,I'm really not a lyricist myself. But maybe I'll get it together at some point and record and post something of my own, perhaps something instrumental.I appreciate your interest though.
Thanks for your positive comments. The tuning I use is BEBEBE,capo 4th fret, which puts it in the original key of Ab,but whatever key works best for your individual voice is always the best to use
I think it's amazing you are also doing the actual orchestration, very close to the real deal this way! And you have a very good voice as well! :) Best Nick covers I've heard so far... :)
so are these built in effects on the keyboard...if not what program are you using....sorry for so many questions..but i recently bought a digital piano with the midi capability and what not...but ive never messed with midi or sampling sounds so i wasnt sure on how to do it.
The program I use is Logic, you can see it running on the computer screen in the background of all the videos I've done so far...some of the sounds are from my keyboard but most are sample based virtual instrument plugins that actually reside within my Mac and can be accessed via midi
I'm glad it sounded realistic enough for you to ask...no,I don't play cello,I wish I did,I played the part on keyboard using a plugin...everything other than guitar is played on keyboard
You sound amazing! if you were slightly more british sounding i would believe it was actually Nick. the only problem i see is the face you pull when waiting to come in lol. Keep Up the goodwork! enjoyed these alot
i have a question: you have found music scores for that? if you did it all by ear i think you could send this to an editor it sound very near to the original
