The difference is that in Catholic schools, students are not statistically at a disadvantage should they choose to attend a regular public school. Black schools were born as a solution to the massive gap in success rate between white and black students in the public system. Unlike Catholic students, instead of being able to choose where to go based on preference, their being told that for a fair shot they NEED to go to another school.

I like the concept of looking at the issues at hand and figuring out how to fix the current school system, I am not sure why it was not addressed before the concept was brought forward in regard to an all black school. All black schools are not all black by the way. Black colleges have a white student body, it is just that we are better at defining our own reality than others are.

There's always going to be de-facto segregation. Quotas by race would bring diversity and would help different races associate and integrate ideas and culture. Some people will only associate with members of the same race but at least by having integrated schools some will be exposed and cultured in other races.

Although I agree with the sordidness of Black segregated schools, I must say (as you probably know from living in Toronto) that the level of social solidarity within Black communities is thin. Blacks in Toronto lack a sense a cohesion and there is a lot of tension between them. This is due in part from the hegemonic educational system thats pushes for Eurocentric assimilation, which does not reinforce Black solidarity, which in turn, precipitates identity fragmentation.
This is due mostly because of the education that african inmigrants receive in their country, going straight to the point I will say that Africans still have a colonial mentality, thing that black caribeans like my self have been able to overcome for the fact that our parents dint allow us to think that way. and we receive a good education from home. the caribeans is one of the first places where black people who were inslave at the time, were succesfully able to rid themself from slavery.
2 of 2 black caribeans were free eveng before african americans and they also develop a sence of solidarity towards one another. in the other hand in 1960 african contries were still coloniza by european countries, Europeans in Africa ass well than in latin america created a education system which consists on ¨respect and solidarity¨ towards the colony Europe, any one who oppoae this type of education were in trouble and risked his life been taking away from him or her.

Afrocentric schools are fine. BUT, as a solution to a problem (disconnect rate in mainstream schools), it's terrible. Toronto Black Schools = "Yes, you're likely at a 60% disadvantage if you go to a regular public school, but here, you can go to this Black school if you want a better chance". People go to Catholic schools as a choice, if it too was because it's a necessity for success, then I'd also ask why the main-stream system that are supposed to be universal for everyone is failing them.

You're trying to make it sound like I have a problem with BET or Ebony, when I was clear I don't. I have a problem with how to promote equality they do even more inequality and have double standards. I know that if in a predominantly black US neighbourhood, if they came out with a local newspaper to cater towards a white minority living there, it would be considered totally unacceptable.
We've gotten so far off topic, that I want to give you the foundation for my opinion and relate it back. I'll give you my story:
#1 of 7 - My friend's family has been in the Toronto police force for many generations. Finally when my friend wanted to follow in their footsteps, the recruiter came directly to his house to meet with my buddy because of the close relationship. My buddy was told point blank that it's going to be hard for him to be recruited because he is white. What is this?
#2 of 7 - Some say it's unequal for blacks, so make it unequal for whites now so it will balance out in the middle! Wow, when will we have REAL equality. Aren't we ready. Open minded people embracing differences are leaders/professionals/respectable figures in society. People who are so racist that they base decisions on it and are closed minded, more typically aren't going to be in a position of power. While there are exceptions, I think you'll find the majority of them are "trailer-trash"
#3 of 7 - I've been discriminated against plenty in school growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood. Anyone who looked brown was immediately called "Paki". One of my siblings was caught by my parents trying to use clothing bleach to make his skin more white. I've got a very good idea about what Racism is. While it was a lot of kids just being kids, if any of them still hold true closed-minded racist hatred, I'm pretty sure they haven't amounted to much in their life.
#4 of 7 - Racism is more a problem for the racist than it is for me. I think there are 4 main groups effected by racism. 1) The person with racism who for their whole life experience things as they seem to be and not as they are and will die closed minded. 2) The minority who truly let their encounters with racism bother them not realizing the racist has a far greater problem 3) The minority who has been trained and conditioned their whole life to find offence with as many things as they can
#5 of 7 - 4) The minority who realizes there are a lot of unfair advantages given to them when everyone around is so afraid of being called a racist... I sympathise for anyone who is in group 2, or really has been passed up for opportunities or discriminated against because of colour, but I hope that they one day can also be grateful for not having been born so closed-minded even if it was simply a result of being a minority.
#6 of 7 - Just look at the people who comment on videos simply to say "go back to Africa", what is the purpose of it? They don't want to start a discussion, they simply want to display their closed-mindedness for everyone to see. They've been so conditioned in their thinking that there's no hope for them to ever experience the world outside of their shell. I look forward to a day with no racism or favoritism where we are truly equal and natural with each other while embracing our differences.
#7 of 7 - How that fit's into my opinion on Black Schools, is that they are great, as long as it is an option, or a path... not a requirement for success because the main stream school statistically favors white students. We should know how to respect each other, work together, succeed together all while embracing our differences and all allowing to explore those differences with heathy curiosity. True harmony.

I am not sure whether this is a step forward or not. I have really mixed feelings about this one. Historically black schools in the US haven't really delivered on expectations... why would this Canadian experiment be any different? IMO, the main problem is that black (as in "rap") culture really doesn't place any value in school. Bling, a pimped ride, and booty will continue to score much higher on desirability than an education... until that changes... whatever is trialed is likely to fail.

The difference is that in Catholic schools, students are not statistically at a disadvantage should they choose to attend a regular public school. Black schools were born as a solution to the massive gap in success rate between white and black students in the public system. Unlike Catholic students, instead of being able to choose where to go based on preference, their being told that for a fair shot they NEED to go to another school.

That doesn't mean that it is reasonable to say that water is a drug. I like the concept of looking at the issues at hand and figuring out how to fix the current school system, I am not sure why it was not addressed before the concept was brought forward in regard to an all black school. All black schools are not all black by the way. Black colleges have a white student body, it is just that we are better at defining our own reality than others are.

There's always going to be de-facto segregation. Quotas by race would bring diversity and would help different races associate and integrate ideas and culture. Some people will only associate with members of the same race but at least by having integrated schools some will be exposed and cultured in other races.

Very good post. Although I agree with the sordidness of Black segregated schools, I must say (as you probably know from living in Toronto) that the level of social solidarity within Black communities is thin. Blacks in Toronto lack a sense a cohesion and there is a lot of tension between them. This is due in part from the hegemonic educational system thats pushes for Eurocentric assimilation, which does not reinforce Black solidarity, which in turn, precipitates identity fragmentation.

There needs to be an inclusion of Black education into the dominant curriculum and should be mandatory for all. Although I speak on behalf of the Afro-segregated schools, we need not stop at there, we need equitable solutions for all of Canada's counterparts so we can continue to portray this image of Canada as a tolerant, magnanimous, multiracial utopia.

It would be great if these new Black Schools represented the same idea. The truth is otherwise though, this system came about because the mainstream system is failing black students. Afrocentric schools are fine. BUT, as a solution to a problem (disconnect rate in mainstream schools), it's terrible. Toronto Black Schools = "Yes, you're likely at a 60% disadvantage if you go to a regular public school, but here, you can go to this Black school if you want a better chance". People go to Catholic schools as a choice, if it too was because it's a necessity for success, then I'd also ask why the main-stream system that are supposed to be universal for everyone is failing them.

To further clarify, I don't claim that there are in fact any legitimate documented differences between races in this area, I simply stated that even if you think this (which many advocates of Black schools seem to think), it is still no excuse to create a solution like the one Toronto has. I however don't think we should shy away from looking for differences between people, just in case it will lead to ways to better understand each other and/or develop solutions that may actually be of value.

BUT I don't think it should be off-limits to research differences between people. Equality is not about getting special treatment, or walking on eggshells on certain topics. Finally when my friend wanted to follow in their footsteps, the recruiter came directly to his house to meet with my buddy because of the close relationship. My buddy was told point blank that it's going to be hard for him to be recruited because he is white. What is this?

#3 of 7 - I've been discriminated against plenty in school growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood. Anyone who looked brown was immediately called "Paki". One of my siblings was caught by my parents trying to use clothing bleach to make his skin more white. I've got a very good idea about what Racism is. While it was a lot of kids just being kids, if any of them still hold true closed-minded racist hatred, I'm pretty sure they haven't amounted to much in their life.

I am not sure whether this is a step forward or not. I have really mixed feelings about this one. Historically black schools in the US haven't really delivered on expectations... why would this Canadian experiment be any different? IMO, the main problem is that black (as in "rap") culture really doesn't place any value in school. Bling, a pimped ride, and booty will continue to score much higher on desirability than an education... until that changes... whatever is trialed is likely to fail.

this is terrible. As a black person, I feel this is a step in the wrong direction. Black students don't need a cop-out.Less rigorous system? Get the hell out of here? We as blacks can and should do better than this.This is just stupid.Blacks should be able to compete with other races not separate from then.Put away the rap music and the game-boy systems and stop all the violence and wanting to hanging out and study! Take advantage of free education and study your asses off.That's what I do!

@aliciafayestyle. how is an all-black shcool a cop out. as a black american i can tell u blacks are doing worse since we have integrated. the system treats us different. blacks have to go to whites to make it. black money leave black hands into white hands. blacks have to make their own system. the system is set to keep blacks on the bottom. segregation is not bad and would actually help black bussinesses in america & canada.

@aliciafayestyle, 1.) Dr Kwabena from the Univ of N. Carolina made a scientific study about two different groups of students,the 1st one include in their program some afrocentric courses and the 2nd one follow the normal curriculum,after one year the students with the Afrocentric curriculum upgrade their average grade from C- to B+, these students were more conscious of their environment, more focus and more disciplined,Afrocentric school are not made to make our student less competitive...

Afrocentric schools are made to improve the situation of the black community .In Canada 49% of black kids drop high school before having their diploma,I rarely heard protests about these terrible statistics but when we're talking about creating an Afrocentric school to improve the sitaution then you hear all kind of justifications and nonsens ,they have no solutions about this tragic drop out rate but they know what is not good for our kids,

Gang violence, absentee fathers and a total lack of respect for education has a much bigger impact on the black community. I guess they are either too dumb or in denial to accept this.

"Gang violence, absentee fathers and a total lack of respect for education" would have a big impact on any community whether it be black, white, green or purple. It's one's environment that determines the outcome of any individual whether it be good or bad and it's the influences that they either have or don't have.
