Cake rolls are always amazing. There's a lot you can do with them, too. You can add cocoa powder to the cake for a chocolate cake. You can use ice cream as filling. You can add pumpkin flavor for Halloween/Thanksgiving or add peppermint flavor for Christmas, etc. Food coloring is great, too. (for Halloween I'm making a black cake roll with orange, pumpkin flavored filling).
Singaporeans pronounce 'flour' as /flɑ:/. A girl who grew up in the US went to a Singapore school and was 'corrected' to pronounce flour as /flɑ:/ instead of /flaʊ-ə/.
Singaporean teachers pronounce and teach their pupils to pronounce flour as / flɑ:/. And in an oral examination, if this word appears in the reading passage, the pupils who pronounce it correctly are penalised.
---- I'd like native speakers from England, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to post in to prove me right.
@heykiddxpotatochipp Hey there. I was taught to cut the edges of cake rolls before you roll them. The edges bake faster than the middle, making them harder and causes the cake to break when attempting to roll it out. Funny thing, I was taught this today!
@quotationmarks Try without rolling on a towel first and you'll see... you may need to bake another cake ;) it's all about flexibility and moisture of the cake.
I roll it into a flashlight without activating the wet sugar at the beginning, and the dough I think it should be finer than that, about 4mm, to have a rolled thinner and with a lot of laps, it's prettier. the best I do is probably rolled almond cream whose principle is the same as the buttercream fair mix in whipped cream and top with whipped cream and covered with almond roasted slim design. if the cake is soaked in syrup at the first stage of the roll, it can act as dessert.
I had something like one of these at a japanese bookstore in New York City and I must say it is one of the most delightful ways to eat a cake. It's not very messy if it's made right and it can be sliced rather thinly giving the illusion of a larger portion. This is really a great way to have cake. :3
thanks for sharing! I tried last week but failed. I did not roll it when I cool it...maybe this is the reason! Thanks again for your helpful video. I will try again according to your tips:)
^^ this is really good i wish i saw this befor i stared cooking somehow the cake turned balck and the whio cream was green ^^""""" BUT IM MUCH BETTERR NOW and i just tought of looking this stuff up on youtbe -_-""
i know a cool thing to do make the cake dark choclate and then make the filling strawberry and then melt vanilla choclate (NO HIGHER THAN 60 DEGREES WHEN MELTING OR WONT MELT IN YOUR MOUTH!) and pour it on the cake ans then take the left over vanilla and forst it around it like forsting and then if you WANT add vanilla shavings and walla you got a advanced looking verzion but it is VERY simple ^^
The filling isn't icing, it is ice cream. That is the traditional "filling" though you could use a nice thick pastry cream too. As for exterior, a light icing or frosting shouldn't be to bad, but ice cream can serve for that as well, then simply sprinkle with the small candies you often see sprinkled on sundaes. Or leave it "au naturel" which is how it was sold a few decades back.
I have a "rolled" cake cooling and and some home made ice cream filling soften even as I write this.
Wow! So that is the trick to not getting cracks on the rolls? My mother and her friends used to make this way back and for them, it was always a hit or miss whether the sheet would get cracks on the skin when rolled. I think a) they let it cool too long, b) they did not pre-roll the cake. My mother no longer makes cakes though but I'm sure she'll like to know these two tricks. Thanks!
I buy Spumoni ice cream and I eat it on a slice of pound cake. It's the single man's ice cream cake, and it's easy and delicious. It might be good with Strawberry ice cream too, but I use Spumoni!!!!!!
my granmother use to work in a bakery making candy and cakes and other desserts so she tought me how to do all those things and now I do and im only 11 years old
Great. Very descriptive. Makes it sound easy!

It's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake
If the way is hazy,
You gotta do the cooking by the book
You know you can't be lazy
Never use a messy recipe,
The cake will end up crazy
If you do the cooking by the book,
Then you'll have a cake
