You should always watch the VHS version as much as possible BECAUSE the VHS has HI-FI which makes maleficent sound more scary and the audio sounds more realistic because the volume changes on it's own.
Maleficent's face is green, her staff is olive green, and the ball on her staff is the same yellow as her eyes. These are the correct colors as seen in the 2003 version.
In the 2008 version, her staff changes to orange on raven close ups, the ball is orange-yellow, and her face is blue. AND, her eyes suddenly change to white at 1:52. I bought the blu-ray disc, but I never watch it, because the colors are screwy.
I like the way Disney kept the original aspect ratio for the 2008 DVD, but the colors look different. Does this mean we'll never get to see the REAL Sleeping Beauty when it's reissued again?
I much prefer the old version (1958) to the 50th anniversary version, they changed the voices and Maleficient isn´t so scary sounding anymore(and other differences too, but thats the main one)
@FinalFantasyFan92 And I cannot for the life of me figure out why they did that for a commercial. Is it seriously that hard to use the clips they have?
i go with the 2008 cause the colors look more modern, i have the 2003 on vhs lol + i have the 2008 on dvd + based on what I saw i think the 2008 is better
The sad thing is that since the back cover uses a 1.33:1 screencap for the "before" image, people have called the "expanded edition" talk false advertising.
2003: Looks closer to the original 1959 look which was "darker" as befits the Gothic fairy tale, 2008 is a lot clearer and brighter and we see small details that would be missed otherwise, but I like both for those reasons although truly the best version is the darker looking one. I remember first seeing Sleeping Beauty in earlier VHS formats from the late 80's and early 90's and I liked those the best
The 80s VHS is way too dark and it was darker than it was originally released in the theaters. The last VHS of Sleeping Beauty, the Masterpiece Collection version, is what the film originally looked like. I still have that VHS and it's still in very good shape and quality. But I have to agree with you about the 2003 edition of being closer to what it originally looked like when it was released in 1959.
I was talking about the brightness and contrast of the film between the two DVDs, not the image cropping, although there is one thing I like more about the Platinum Edition than the 2003 edition is the expanded image that shows parts of the image edges that were cut out in the previous releases.
The Platinum Edition is actually a little bit darker than what is shown on here because YouTube quality stinks. Overall, the Platinum Edition has better quality than the 2003 Special Edition.
In some scenes it is too bright such as the part where Maleficient curses Aurora and it shows a purple colored screen with demons coming out of the head of her staff. The Platinum editions version of that scene is too bright. The 2003 DVD and Masterpiece Collection video has more so the appropriate brightness for that scene.
I totally agree. They are trying to make it look like they "restored" it but they totally ruin the color pallete. What makes Sleeping beauty so beautiful is it's dark mysterious Middle Ages look and all the Green undertones. And with the 2008 version, it looks very washed out and it doesn't have the rich enchanted green color.
@tlrmcknnn But since Lowry are the most respected video restoration company in the world, and given that they use an unprecedented back catalog of original artwork and documents from production, there is no reason to believe that the 2008 version is inferior. It even reveals artwork that was otherwise impossible to see in the 2003 version.
Everyone time and time again is getting confused with the colour timing. The 2008 Lowry restoration was scanned from the original RGB camera negative.
My favourite disney film! <3

I liked the widescreen aspect of it, but the newer one is waay too bright.
Sleeping Beauty is meant to look dark and gothic.
It's not supposed to look like the Little Mermaid, or anything. :P

No, They only changed the voices on the commercial not the actual movie itself.

the colors are far better and appropriate in the 2003 version. 2008 is too bright.
