  • Amazing! Pirate ahoy! Thank's matey, whoever ye may be sailing on that great pirate ship in the sky by now! Arrrgh! BTW: Was this photo taken by the same photographer who did the famous one of Einstein sticking out his tongue?

  • This image is more in character with Nyiergyhazi masquerading in an inebriated moment as Horowitz.

  • jghancockjr - the two greatest pianists ever.

  • @kasyapa ---Well, kasy, Volodya for sure and N's Liszt St. Francis Walking one of the great recordings of all time but N's uberresonance can make my ears feel a little fuzzy after awhile. Seems like there are quite a few contenders for the #2 slot.

  • The beginning sounds kind of like the theme music in Disney's Alladin. ("Arabian nights...")

  • may anyone tell me why it is called pirate recordings?

  • Becaus is not a commercial recording.

Is made whit a portable recorder by one of the public.

  • @volodya2

No way! If I may ask, where did you find the recording?

  • The sheer power of his playing.......*shudders*

  • how can i get a copy of one of the Horowitz concert pirate recordings?

  • Didn't know it was in his repertoire. It's insanely beautiful and it ofcourse it has some Horowitz add-on features!

    Thanx for posting!

  • This whole concert was recently released in 2003 on a 2-CD album titled "The Boston Recital". It is produced in Germany by Living Stage. It is the whole concert, UNCUT! IT also includes a press conference extra from 1974.

  • where did you get this photo?

  • google

  • Horowitz could play many Liszt. Unfortunatly, he didn't record them...

  • Wonderful recording! It's a blessing to be able to hear this valuable recording. But to my personal curiosity; what does 'pirate' recording mean? Thanks again so much for this video!

  • pirate recording mean that this performance was recorded by an amateur whit amateur recording, and not by discographic house.

there are maaaaany pirate recording on horowitz, but they are hard to find, if some one have one, please contact me! :P

  • That's very interesting and a wonderful treasure to have. Thanks for the info! How exactly is a pirate recording made? Since it's an amature recording, does a person in the audience record it by tape recorder or soemthing? As opposed to the concert hall itself recording him? I'm just not sure how pirate recordings work! I'd appreciate the additional info. Much Thanks,

  • yes. a pirate recording made by an amateur that go to the concert whit a small recorder :P

shhh!! don't tell this to anyone! it's illegal... :D

  • But in the 1960s and 1970s they didn't have recorders small enough to sneak into the concert hall.

Horowitz supposedly privately recorded his recordings since 1965, I think the sound engineer had the recording.

  • yes, they had them - either with or without the connivance of the hall people. you can tell it's from audience because of the close-up sounds of applause, talking, etc.

  • This is so unique!! Thanks so much for letting us hear it.

  • Sorry sorry sorry ! You are most probably right! Are'nt we lucky to be able to hear this, which Horowitz played only once in public! He was in a great shape too. I had never heard of it. I am glad I was wrong. May the pirate and Volodya2 be thanked. My humble apologies again.

  • Come on, is'nt this Volodos playing his own version ? The pirate must have drunk one bottle of rhum too many.

  • Why do you think that? The style is clearly Horowitz's and it's nothing like the Volodos arrangement.

  • this is NOT volodos!

this his horowitz's famous pirate recording, October 26, 1969: Symphony Hall, Boston, Massachusetts... :P

  • as many times as i hear that climax, i cannot believe my ears. please, maestro - tell us how?

  • Thanks for the post! Where did you get this great photo??

  • François-Marie Banier, photographer, New-York 1982.

  • It's amazing...He looks like that famous picture of Einstein!!! Geniuses think alike, I guess.
