Oh, just FYI, you can pick up HL1 for $10, although if you're going to get it, you might as well get its add-ons (Opposing Force and Blue Shift) as well, in which case the Half-Life 1 Anthology is a good choice at $15. Or at least those are the prices I see right now.

I suggest you stay away from Half-Life: Source. It's a port of HL1 to the Source engine, and to me it looks like crap, with lots of things too dark compared to the GoldSrc version. Plus, Deathmatch is not included.

Actually, if you're gonna take yourself back to the past, you could even go to the late '70s and play something from an Atari machine. But that's early even for me.

Well, I guess it's all relative. Today's games will be retro in another 10 years. It's just I draw the line much earlier, since I'm older and actually grew up in the '80s and '90s.

Changing the subject somewhat, have you played Portal? That's kind of a fun one you could try after this, if you don't go for HL1, that is.

As for playing over Steam, I might be willing to do that, but I'm not much of an FPS player in general. I got hooked on Half-Life out of curiosity, and I like the story and all the subtle things in the game at least as much as the action. But I haven't really played most other FPSs. (It might be that there's something out there I would also enjoy and I just don't know what I'm missing.) Thanks for the offer though.

WHAT?! You consider a game from 2004 to be RETRO? Dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. Half-Life ONE, *maybe*. But even that I consider a bit new. Find something from the '80s, and I'd call it retro.

Anyway, looks like a promising LP. And yeah, you really should have played Half-Life 1 before this. It's not required, of course, but you'll get a lot more of the references.
