Yeah after hearing Half Of My Heart, the War Of My LIfe demo, Friends Lovers or Nothing, and Heartbreak Warfare, it doesn't sound like it could fit. Do you think that Who Says I Can't or The Hurt will be on either? He said that The Hurt would be on a while ago and he play Who Says I Can't recently.
I'm pretty sure that Who says I Can't will make it on the record. Not only because he plays it quite often recently but also because the theme of the song fits with the concept of Battle Studies. I didn't hear The Hurt and War Of My Life yet. But I will check them out asap;)

Don't get me wrong, I've been a John Mayer fan since the beginning. "Only Heart" from Heavier Things is probably my favorite song of all time. I even bought his new DVD. His newer music though is just too soft and lacks something...spunk or freshness. The songs sound almost like they've been soaked with depressants or painkillers. I know it's only 40 seconds of music, but I'm having trouble trying to figure out the song by ear. I'm getting the key of Eb. What kind of chords do you think John is using?
I think part of the reason why this song sounds different is because of the shifting keys. It goes Cm Fm Eb Cm Bb and then the chromatically descending bass notes produce Ab Eb Gb etc. The verse chords are all missing the 5th note i.e. it's all 1 and 3. I think this is responsible for the not-so-full feel of the chords
it kinda sucks cuz i cant really give you a yay or a nay because whatever you do is close to genius...so do what you're gonna do and i'll be on your side
John, I like it. takes me to an abstract place. the water imagery is good for lots of derivities of meaning, potientially appealing to many of we listeners situations. sounds honest, unthreatning, heartfelt. i prefer your work unpolished and studio glossy-d up. nice!

Actually, from listening to John's friends talk to me about him, Jeff Buckley is his biggest inspiration. That's how it is with me. Yes Jimi and B.B and Eric and Stevie are guitar gods, but Jeff is essential to any legit musician. I think most of these songs are kinda of sad, hopeful songs. His new record was most likely written when he was sitting around, depressed and thoughtful.

Can't you just picture this song being perfected in a studio for an album?
His voice sounding perfect, the first verse and chorus being played solo by him, then having the rest of the band come in during the second verse.
John would throw in a little solo after the bridge.
Maybe harmonize the last chorus, and then fade out the song.
It's just perfect.
I just hope it's on the follow-up album to Battle Studies.

starting at the 12sec, sounds like buddy's voice from lifehouse. (check out "you belong to me" - lifehouse) there's a better example out there, but I can't seem to remember the song title. just a thought!

I know it's only 40 seconds of music, but I'm having trouble trying to figure out the song by ear. I'm getting the key of Eb. What kind of chords do you think John is using?

I think part of the reason why this song sounds different is because of the shifting keys. It goes Cm Fm Eb Cm Bb and then the chromatically descending bass notes produce Ab Eb Gb etc. The verse chords are all missing the 5th note i.e. it's all 1 and 3. I think this is responsible for the not-so-full feel of the chords

John, I like it. takes me to an abstract place. the water imagery is good for lots of derivities of meaning, potientially appealing to many of we listeners situations. sounds honest, unthreatning, heartfelt. i prefer your work unpolished and studio glossy-d up. nice!

And then again, besides Jeff and John, who else do you hear dramatically changing pitch while singing? He attempts to hit the same notes as Jeff. What do you have against Jeff anyways, you child?

Actually, from listening to John's friends talk to me about him, Jeff Buckley is his biggest inspiration. That's how it is with me. Yes Jimi and B.B and Eric and Stevie are guitar gods, but Jeff is essential to any legit musician. I think most of these songs are kinda of sad, hopeful songs. His new record was most likely written when he was sitting around, depressed and thoughtful.
