  • Who ever that blonde girl is. I want to punch her in the face

  • I LOVE rent and really want it to come back to london but this is shameful

  • I'm all about artistic integrity, but at some point, you are going to violate the point of the original work. Here are my qualms: Too many blondes. Where's the black women? Why is Angel bald? He's got AIDS, not Cancer.

Rent is supposed to take place in the multi-ethnic section of New York City in the early 1990's near the end of the AIDS epidemic. The people on this show are too preppy, too clean, straight out of Abercrombie & Fitch. Why feel bad about a group of rich suburbanites?

  • what is the blonde WEARING???? i thought this was for children

  • The yellow dancing bear at the back makes this video disappointing. LOL. Kidding. Missing the high parts. :[

  • To all of you who say that Jonathan Larson would be ashamed or insulted by this tell me how that is your place to say that? You have no idea what Larson would have thought of this, none of us do. Don't presume to know how a composer would feel about how his work was interpreted. If you don't like what's been done with it, that's your opinion. Don't state it as fact.

  • i'm sorry, but this is pretty terrible. me and my friends sing this better on a drunken night out. we even sing the harmonies that larson actually wrote, not some terrible simplification. :(

  • Oh dear utter dissapointment.

  • Nicely whitewashed cast there...

  • I think they probably just toned it down because they will have already performed the show twice that day and their voices will be tired. When they actually performed it in the theatre it would have been the original score. WICKED did the same.

  • I actually like it :) when I first saw it I thought it was rubbish, but its so unique and its own, not trying to re-create the Original Broadway Cast version :D every company should strive to do that, make it there own!

  • This brings shame to the UK. I can only apologize on their behalf and say not all British theatre is this crap. Take RENT back to it's original score - it's beautifully raw and full of emotion: the way it should be x

  • It's hardly any different from the original orchestration, why are people making such a big deal?!

  • @DistantCousin because you don't change RENT unless you've been a part of the cast some time before : P. No really, the arrangement here in the chorus just takes out the beautiful out of it pretty much, a matter of note selection. And also the high note in the male's solo, you HAVE to hit it when doing this song. Rentheads realize that, so that's why they make such a big deal. Cheers = )

  • What a load of shit. This has scarred me. Ruined a legendary song :'(

  • awesome cast, awful production!

  • Damn UK, you scary!

  • Even the Hollywood Bowl was better...

  • Uk. Do better.

  • seriously...who backed this production?

  • is it me or it sounds a bit off tune in the part ´´ How about looove???

  • ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww WHAT IS UP WITH THE SOLOS? GET BACK BROADWAY. they had soul because they knew the writer, Jonathon Larson and they understood it. this is sooo shit.

  • @gracesbracesarefit The original cast might have known Larson, but there's been many NY casts of Rent since so it's a silly argument. I think the London cast were great. Great they they weren't just trying to do a carbon copy of the original production

  • Say what you like about the concept of the show but any doubt that Oliver who played Mark has no talent can surely be put to bed when you see the success he has had and continues to have!

  • they have good voices...but its not right.

  • Rent Remixed was the biggest fail in the history of musicals.

I'm British and I can't even stand up for what they did.

I'm just glad they didn't butcher Seasons of Love as much as they did some songs to be perfectly honest. (Don't know what I mean? Look up 'Out Tonight' and 'Take Me or Leave Me' from Rent Remixed. You will literally lose the will to live.)

  • @Peeny1046 I disagree, Out Tonight was a genius reinvention.

  • iloveit

  • I'm British, but this is shit.

  • 3:00-3:12 great mimic :)

  • Hey, that' s Siobhan Donaghy, the "Lady in Red"!

    She's amazing!

  • definition of FAIL.

  • Meh...

  • Jonathan Larson would be ashamed.

  • Oliver is soo cute in this video :)

  • This should accompany a chorus of "The British are coming, the British are coming!"

  • rent so doesn't work whenmade all english

  • I love how people dislike this version. Fair enough it's nowhere near as good as the original. But the show has been completley re-worked to appeal to different audiences. Hence the name change - 'Rent Remixed.' The show has a whole different feel and uses an extremley powerful cast! They're only doing what they've been taught/told - Give them a break?! :-D

  • i've heard this song from the original cast, the latest cast of rent in broadway and the greek version and i have to say that this version is not even close to them

  • shocking !!!

  • hey who idiot didn't liked this! i saw the play the other day it was wonderfull!!!!

  • This isn't about the actors, since they are obviously very talented, but this "update" is so bad, it makes me want to die. Is that an accordion??!!! Sounds like one. I thought they were going to lay on the floor and all have sex when they merged together because they appeared to begin groping each other at "how about love." I'm no perv, It's just that some of the costumes and the way they're made-up looks porn starish, lol. Or maybe it's not as poignant sung by a bunch of preppy folk.

  • @iBenjafied He would of been

  • @iBenjafied If this is garbage, why would anybody watch it! Duh...

  • I'm not saying that Rent remixed was a good idea, cos it really wasn't, but when regular Rent was tried in the West End it didn't work, no idea why cos I love it, but it just didn't. So they thought they'd try again, 'update' it, and then maybe see if they could connect with British audiences, obviously they failed, but theatre is all about trying new things, so good on them for trying. So all of the people saying 'OMFG WHY DID THEY DO THIS?' that is why.

Anyway, Oliver Thornton is the sex.

  • @XNancieRoseX Very good point. The original never connected with British audiences, beyond a cult-RENT head fandom, so there was every reason to have a go at a new interpretation. However, William Baker was a totally inexperienced theatre director and that's why it failed primarily.

  • Rent remixed was the biggest load of bollocks iv ever seen! why mess with perfection Jonathan wrote it a certain way for a reason. they only bloody got away with it coz he wasnt here to stop them! R.I.P Jonathan Larson. oh and the 2008 cast with Eden Espinosa in was bloody amazing! we shud of had that over here! :(

  • Has anyone else noticed Oliver Thornton is wearing an Abercrombie & Fitch hoddie? Totally wrong for rent?

  • WTF?

  • I'm British but this is complete BLASPHEMY!

  • @iBenjafied Hahaha Jonathan Larson didn't even live to see the original open on Broadway! He was and still is very much, totally DEAD. I would think, were he alive, he would be amazed and thrilled that so many have loved, admired and tried to perform his marvelous work. If not, then he wouldn't deserve the credit and adulations he has been given for this incredibley visionary, sensitive and deeply moving musical story.

  • I'm from the UK and love the west end, but seriously, we should have left this alone!

  • @tresgrooved Totally agree! This was ruined. Its a shame as the idea of "updating" rent isnt at all a bad one, just wasnt' done well here.

  • so at 1:40, 3 weak blonde white singers = 1 powerful soulful black singer. pretty much.

  • I dont know why but Rent just never worked in london . I think a lot has to do with the fact that they never cast it very well.

  • yes they did

    omg they are good

  • yikes!

  • leave the whiteboy to sing the soulful solo

  • They raped the song.....

  • 1:35 all wrong, 2:00 wtf??? 2:24 so bad, 3:00 terrible 3:09 why is she the main focus???

  • @MaddieLouiseRossetto She's Denise Van Outen - I don't know why they focused on her too much. They should have had the camera on the guy singing "Measure, measure your life in love-woooo".

  • @MaddieLouiseRossetto because she would have been the "known" Person in it .... although i don't know many of the others because i live in Aus buts thats my guess

  • awful

  • This is a West End video, you can't expect them to follow the same screenplay as the original Jonathan Larson's RENT as in NYC. duhrrr lol, may not be the best vocals but it's just a different style we're all unaccustomed to. It's no West End Billy Elliot but it was a good performance, bravo!

  • I don't see why people say this is- never mind. At 1:40, I see why.

  • Was that denise van outen???

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • all of them look too pretty to be living hand-to-mouth.

  • I feel like when they auditioned, they looked more at faces than anything. S:

I can`t say it was completely rubbish, but it didn`t live up to expectations I guess. x:

    Jesse&WilsonFTW.

  • nice attempt at trying to be as good as the american cast.

  • they did not do this song justice...... at all

  • woo Oliver!! :)

  • Yes, we all agree it's awful, but take a look at Donny Osmond's version (youtube it)

Nothing is ever going to beat the Broadway or film soundtrack. Ever.

  • This sounds very different from the original... Not bad but... Hmmm... really different. Like they fail to send the song's "INTENSE MESSAGE" across to people who are listening... I love this song so much and I was not inspired by their performance. Sorry.

  • @CHINACRISIS1000 there is no "soul" with them singing it

  • they were alright but they didnt sing it rite!!! watch my show choir!

  • Messy.

  • the only good bit is the solo 'measuring love' at 3minutes

  • the hell... get the originals on the stage!! >:O and what the hell is up with the girl in the swimsuit and the gay dude with the small shirt? seriously... they just disgraced that song and the original movie

  • @lordzero545 It wasn't originally a movie. It was a stage show first.

  • ugh. It was good until the solos and then it was awful. the girls' solo made me want to hit something. sorry

love the song, and now it's been ruined.

  • they sound good

  • They can sing GREAT as an ensemble but when they do they first solo-it runins it from there and its kind of funny they sound too southern-good try guys!!!

  • you can tell Denise Van Outen is the favourite,

so much more camera time than the rest

  • I love the idea of refreshing and reworking RENT but it didn't go so well here. Francesca as Joanne is too prominent in the first part of the song. Also, I don't think any of them look happy enough. This song is a celebration and until about 2.30 none of them are really engaging with the celebratory feel. Also because they did not give the Seasons of Love soloist enough prominence the song felt.. almost aimless, like it didn't have an emotional climax. But good effort all round.

  • that was awful

  • idk y but i just don't think this one don't have the feelin that the other cast of rent had

  • wow...they are not good

  • fran !!! from i'd do anything is joanne here. i luv her

  • this isn't very good. the american cast is much better than this sorry bunch.

  • Oh my god, the dancing teddy bear in the background. *falls out laughing*

  • Which ones are supposed to be mark and roger? I can tell whos angel, collins, maureen, joanne, benny and mimi. they all look a bit different to the stereotypical versions of the characters so I can't tell which ones mark or roger. I miss the scarf and glasses lol plus some of the comments are quite harsh here. I don't think its that bad, they just don't have voices as big as their American counterparts and we have to remember that this is a DIFFERENT production so logically it can't be the same.

  • makes me ashamed to be british... i admit the american movie cast just KICKS ASS!

  • I didnt get anything from this performance hmm quite poor!

  • it's different... but ugh... the american version is so much freaken better.

  • Oliver Thornton was the best bit of it. The rest wasn't that great... But it was good. x

  • They changed Rent to this remix version in London few years ago didn't they???

I saw the London version in 1999 and it was good at that time.

but this remix version is not as bad as I thought but still the original and movie version is 10times better!!

The tree blond girls singing is awful... they were just "singing".

  • Ahh!! Ive been looking for this forever!

It was about 2 years later, when I discovered RENT.

Now I watch it EVERY SINGLE DAMN DAY!! :D

I just remember a femenine looking short guy, Angel. This cast is different to the 2005 movie crew.

  • I'm sorry, but the American version is SO MUCH BETTER. There are supposed to be solos and high, beautiful notes and this just . . . just doesn't have soul.

  • @TechnocolorDreamboat Please don't judge us Brits on this!!! We're good at theatre, we swear....

  • @zombiegirl626 I believe you. I didn't think all people from a country where theater originated were into stuff like this.

  • I love rent so much and this was painful!

  • Ass. Hot. Mess.

  • i love u guys

  • aweful

  • This wasn't the greatest version, but I loved it all the same.

The only thing I didn't think was very good was when the three ladies sang at the same time because they sang three different versions of Joanne's part. Didn't sound very pretty.

Also, when the two guys sang Colin's part wasn't great either, but it was better than the girls singing. Those two were more on the same pitch and sang the same.

  • when the 3 ladies sang joanne's part, it was suppose to be harmonizing it but i still agree, it wasnt that great

  • dear london cast,

thank u for ruining a great song

  • Love Siobhan.

I have never seen this musical, therefore I can't say if this was a good or bad performance verses other versions. However, I did sing this in choir, and I thought it was good.

  • WTF is everyones problem sounds exactly like every other seasons of love and really who cares what they wear lol I love rent too but unless you missed it the show was about accepting ppl how they are and compassion .... Now show some dammit ;-)

  • WTF is this??!!

  • that hurt,

it wasnt the worst... but it really wasnt the best

  • im sorry but this is like a wardrobe disaster

  • Oh no!!!!

  • That is one intense dominatrix outfit. Wow.

  • mhmm y do we brits kinda ruin things XD

  • hey. at least it was for a good cause. :) that's all that mattered.

  • True that. True that :)

  • Well i have seen the musical

    and they are absolutely brilliant!

i want to go and see it again

  • @Lipszy I wish so much that it was possible!

  • worst cast ever...

  • you can say that again, what were they wearing anyway?

  • Really terrible compared to the original cast, its soo bad, they really killed it.

  • They have good voices, but they didn't get anything right.

  • this cast luks n sounds crap! the only ppl who seem fine r the guys supposed 2 be angel/collins. they r not supposed 2 luk tht bright n shiny 4 gudness sake they luk they've been told there's a cure 4 AIDS and there's no point of luking or singing the parts right geez

  • @iBenjafied i agree :)

  • To TotallyBonkers123: The main story lines of the musical just isn't about sex, drugs, and swearing. It's about finding love and friendship through hard times, pain, and death. Also, to other people it really doesn't matter who sings it. It's an amazing Musical and I'm so glad Jonathan Larson wrote it. Very powerful message no matter who sings it or stars in it.

  • I second that!

  • i love this song sooo, sooo much BUT should they really be promoting a show about drugs, sex and swearing to the people of CHILDREN IN NEED?

  • the message is nothing about drugs sex and swearing!!! RENT is about no regret and love, the storyline is different than the meaning...

  • i grant that, i was only saying . . . and i understand that it's the story line, not the musical! sorry if i offended you :P this musical has moved me in too many ways!

  • @TotallyBonkers123 have u actually watched rent coz if u hve u need 2 watch it again and again until u get wht the actual message is about

  • I've watched it so many times I can't even count! I know what the message is ty! =P

  • if the rent being about "drugs, sex and swearing" is all u got thn tht's jus sad b'se there's much more 2 it thn tht and clearly u hvent got wht its about b'se all u focused on was the above

  • Okay, to clear this up: Rent is about friendship, about the struggle of every day, but above all, about love. Before I fall out with everyone watching this video (!) all I was trying to say was that Rent includes drug &+ sex references, which maybe are not suitable for younger children. I wasn't trying to imply that that was what the show is about. So, can we leave it at that? I love this show too much, don't ruin how it's touched my life, and helped me realise the beauty it.

  • i want the blonde in black leather!!!!

  • there's no soul in this at all !!

  • it was at 2 o'clock in the morning hehe

  • Every production of Rent cannae be the same as the original! It's not awful!

  • i agree :)

  • Comment removed

  • i dont think this one of the best ones ive seen

  • yuck this is bad

  • omg they really suck... what a disgrace... bad casting.... really bad casting... ugh...

  • i agree. oy.

  • UGHHH *barfs* CMON I JUST WANTED TO SEE THIS TO SEE HOW IT WAS SO BAD AND O M G, DISGRACE TO RENT AND JONATHAN LARSON!

    EVERYTHING IS RENT (not remixed)

  • I hate this. A lot.

  • wow. Normally you can get some semblance or recognition of who is supposed to be what character, but this cast confuses me... What's with the dixie chix? and the brunette ken doll?

  • this is awful!!

  • @makemesick00 I thought I was the only one that thought this >.>

  • lol at the guy in the crowd waving the teddy bears XD

  • Shameful!!!!! What a pretence to think they can master Larson's work!! It wasn't for nothing Rent remix was a flop!!!

  • sorry i didnt say in my last coemment but i love the film version of rent to

  • im going to see a performance of rent at a theater near me just hope they dont change it alot

  • i love how the burly black guy was groping the little bald white guy, it looked like he was holding a toy ;P

but they arent great singers, I mean my highschool sounds better. lol

  • I know what you mean. My choi is doing this and it sounds awesome, but I think it's coz they had too many people doing the solos and there are like no high singers. The bit where Collins is meant to belt the word 'died' they didnt!

  • Well to be honest this is the performance that introduced me to RENT so I still think it is okay. RENT should never have been remixed, yeah, but if someone wanted to try, at least they did. The cast themselves were okay, I personally like the fact that on this performance the harmony in the chorus is different and I also like the fact the chorus has more of an anti-climax. Rent remixed wasnt good no, but certain goodness came out of it.

  • you suck

  • This was nice, but not at all what I expected.

It really sounded pretty, but I perfer the original alot better. They sure can sing, but they didn't do it the way Jonathan Larson wrote it.

  • Wow they changed the song so much!

  • what the hell???? they sucked the soul out of the song! they didn't feel it so i didn't feel it !!!!! god i hope they did better in the show

  • these people have no soul! ugh. this really sucks

  • When I went to see this, they totally missed out Take Me or Leave Me. I think someone messed up their lines and they just didn't go back. It was so poor! The show generally was completely terrible. Denise especially. She just totally ruined who Maureen should be. Despite that I remember quite liking Francesca Jackson (who played Maureen) and the Mimi understudy (I don't remember her name). So yeah. The whole thing was terrrible. Why can't we have PROPER Rent back on the West End?!

  • like they said at the musical theatre workshop of rent today "we don't mention the london run..."

  • Oh come on! RENT is mooore than edgy enough it didn't need to be "Remixed" it's jus been sapped of all of the beauty and soul and turned into some sort of radio-airplay wannabe, unoriginal Musical Mistake... and that guy in their cast is a dead ringer for anthony rapp at 0:47

  • I'd rather have only 1 person doing the solos, but the 3-part harmony sounded pretty neat!

  • other than the not so solo parts being off it was fine. this is what rents about anyone should be able to sing it how it fits their voices and they should be able to dress how they want cause thats what rent is, celebrating everyone

  • OMG i seriously laughed my head off at 2:28 - 2:36 XD

  • Looks like they took the original and made them into chavs O_O

  • I don't like this. Why has it all been changed and tampered with. 'Remixed' seems to be a word for modernised, and somehow made really annoying and corny, when this show is supposed to be the opposite. The cast is silly because they are all white, and there are no racial differences apart from collins. All of the character's interesting qualities have been taken forward, stamped on and the shells of the characters left are put on stage. Why choose Denise Van Outen for Maureen? She's shit!

  • This is abysmal. Really truly awful. All the harmonies are wrong- who changed them? Who is the musical director? Why not do what Jonathan Larson WROTE? He would be turning in his grave to hear this. Where is the high note on "died"?! Can they not reach it? Gah.

  • this is bad...no emotion! and the lady's/man's solo parts done 3-fold? This was awful

  • I'm in the UK, but I have to say... Noooo!!! Not a patch on the Broadway version..

  • All the girls look like Barbie Dolls! It totally defeats the purpose of RENT!!

  • they can not hit the hight notes lol..

  • sorry but lackingcommonsense... well duh it is in britain!!! and what about the race now you are being racist

    this video was great x

  • oho dear this is bad

  • I thought it was a good show. ok not as great as the broadway version. Every production brings their own twist and interpretation to the show. We did the same in the recent Dublin production of Rent.
