The hallway is actually a lot safer than the room because the floor has a much smaller width but the same thickness, meaning the area is much smaller and fewer fat people can stand on a single section for the same length of wall-contact.

Just picture a wooden board. Picture one that is one foot square, and a karate master is breaking it in half. Now picture a second board one third the width, but the same length, and the karate master is trying to break it in half, lengthwise. Much harder.
