so, is the laser diode the pump here, and the gain medium a type of glass? i.e diode-pumped solid-state? im having a load of trouble trying to find out if barcade scanners are diode-pumped solid-state lasers, or just laser diodes (as i understand laser diodes are not defined as solid-state lasers)
@calum591 This is just the output of the 808nm diode itself. I am not using a yag or other crystal. Some barcode scanners contain a very small hene laser tube, most seem to use a diode.
@ghostdawg2 Probably one of the best burners available would be a laser based on a 12x bluray diode. The 405nm violet beam will even burn white materials. I would probably pick blue (445nm) over green or red.
@mraiford My cameras have done well so far. No fried pixels, yet. 808nm is seen as a dull deep red, but only try this indirectly with a well diverged low power source.
what's the after affect there at 2:36? as well, if you hooked this up to a 2 mirror spirograph, do you think you could make some cool designs in those surfaces, or would it just burn the mirrors?
@7poppasmurf7 It appears that the IR beam is showing as a gray spot after the bullet melts out of the way. The spirograph burning idea could work, plenty of mirrors will relect 808nm no problem. It would have to be done fully enclosed however, so there could be no possibility of an errant beam. I would also need lenses that would allow focus to occur further from the laser
It is high powered, but it is NOT a laser. Notice the glass in any one of them. He makes it look straight, but it is rounded, and focuses the light to one spot.
@Unon1100 Cylinder lenses are used to focus light on only one axis. A little googling could show you how these, a FAC, and anamorphic prism pairs can be used to correct the asymmetrical output of a laser array, such as the array I am using.
@DragonFlyback256 That buzzing is the rewound MOT in my power supply. It has a new secondary of heavy flat copper magnet wire from an elevator motor. This secondary vibrates randomly against the core, and is in need of a little epoxy.
@Wired2coffee If you run your finger through the beam where it is well expanded, not near the focal point, it only feels warm. At the focal point, the finger turns to fire.
@BCPCX if i had a 60W laserdiod i sure as hell would try looking without safetygoggles no matter what, one stray beam and your blind for sure. But yes you could see IR depending on what wavelength but it would be very dim.
Most people see 808nm as a very dull deep red. This is not the diode to choose for looking at the spot with no goggles. At this power level, laser goggles are on before the power switches are turned on.
Depends how you do on ebay for a diode. Could be $300 with no guarantee the diode is much good. Then to power it you need at least a variac, rewound MOT, 100A rectifier, and filter capacitor. Also a voltmeter and a 100A ammeter are needed. Diodes have a maximum current rating. They are blown by excess amps not volts. The diode must be cooled, may even need water cooling. Turn on cooling and slowly turn up the variac while watching the ammeter display.
Bring current up past the diode's threshold, and you can try out different optics at a safer power level. When running diodes at or near full power, also check them for any heating. Most IR diodes want to be run at less than 30C at all times.
Check out my homepage linked on my channel how to use high power Lasers to transmit electric shocks for brainwashing and torture. My brother was assassinated last year by the Geman BND using such techniques.
I have the same diode and a current regulated power supply, I was considering using a optical relay for switching. Do you think the diode can be switched without damage? Also where did you get your optics to collimate the flat beam?
this reminds me of the depiction of the heat ray in war of the worlds: "Whatever is combustible flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs like water, it softens iron, cracks and melts glass"
What happens if you play with that stuff without safety glasses? Have anyone tried out this?
Hey the buzz sound reminds me to a mot.
Don't laser need stabilized current supplies?
Do little spikes kill those big diode bars too?
Do you think you can collimate the beam as perfect as normal laser pointers and beam it through an opened window of your house and light up some trees? (of course all passengers in the near should wear safety glasses)
It is possible, if you desperately want to destroy your eyes. However, if you like being able to see, you will wear goggles every time you use a laser with a power equal to or greater than 20 mW.
60 watt CO2 is not too hard to run. The tube will need water cooling, some hoses and a small pump will do. You'll need a power supply of about 10kV, this can be built or bought.
60 watt diode will need cooling, could be TEC or water plate. Diode in video uses water cooling. Need to monitor current to diode so as not to exceed maximum, also power supply should be smooth, as ripple-free as possible. Could use variac hooked to rewound MOT, rectifier, and filter cap bank to test and do short runs
I am using flat magnet wire, 3/8" by 3/32", wound with an air space between turns. I simply need to put little wood or plastic shims in to stop the excessive movement.

Goggles mandatory, one mistake = white cane.
Power supply is rewound MOT driven by variac, full wave rectified and filtered. Meters for diode current and voltage.
Yes a spike from a non-discharged cap can kill a big diode.
These are multimode, will not collimate like a laser pointer.

Man, your MOT is noisy =P these diodes are quite fun (I have one as well - there's a video of it in my channel)

008626 2 years ago
The transformer is noisy because the changing magnetic induction of the alternating current causes ferric material in the coils to vibrate.

Two questions:
- Do you use an IR filter for your camera lens?
- What is the background noise coming from? Almost sounds AC... thought that these diodes were DC?
likmahchoda 2 years ago
There is no filter on the camera lens.
The power supply is making the noise.
A variac drives a rewound microwave oven
transformer, full wave bridge, and filter caps. The transformer makes an AC buzzing noise. The 12V coolant pump makes a shrill buzzing noise too. You hear it, and then the transformer noise kicks in as well.
