Anyone ever thought for a min that this is a movie, and this scene was filmed on towed trailer through London. So Yeh, Phil changed gear as best he could, seeing as 1st is the easiest.

These actors drove around around London for weeks on their scoots to get ready for their "parts" however, this particular scene was shot on a trailer for the effect of the dialogue to be clear up Goldhawk Road. Ever rode a scoot without protection? Why don't you just turn over and do a few under water farts eh!

This scene was deleted from the original film because of the inconsistencies in it. The cars for instances were 70's. You see a Maxi and Cortina. It was added back in when the film was rereleased with other deleted scenes in the 90's. There were a couple of scenes in Brighton where youll see the more modern traffic light as well.

The bike must be up on a trailer, watch for him taking off when he's still got the clutch pulled in. If you know the shift pattern, he also takes off from a stop in fourth gear.
