Tibetan, like all minorities in China, are given preferential treatment in education, and government employment, they also get better rationing while Han Chinese starved in Cultural revolution. Tibet is an autonomous region and ruled by Tibetan, the recent riot was economic based, due to rising commodity prices as shops and banks were robbed. It was a class riot, between the poor tibetans and versus businesss-running Han Chinese.

Today's protests are mostly done by former land-owners and nobles that got their land and slave taken away, same with just about every landowners. My family used to own 3/4 of our city in Guangzhou, today it would be worth billions if protests alone can make communist return our land. Let's be realistic, okay?

The Tibetan Youth Congress and SFT wouldn't listen to His Holiness. You have to realize that even within the Tibetan community, the opinions are divided. Even though i am a Kuomintang supporter and not a CCP supporter, i personally believe that the gov't does not target a specific ethnicity, but treats all equally. China has like what.. 56 ethnic minorities and the largest ethnic minority are the Zuang (18 million) and still retain and practice their culture and preserve their language in Guangxi. i would like to see democracy in china, but i have to agree that for a country so enormously large (1.3 billion people - 4 times the USA) china still needs a central gov't for the time being to ensure stability economically, socially and politically throughout the country. In about a couple years, china will be able to have democracy (i hope soon as possible ^^). China is gradually catching up to what most western countries now enjoy, but china is enormous and takes some time.

Yes China will have democracy in the future, but that requires large injection of education into rural country side. Democracy doesn't work in China currently, because vast majority of Chinese population reside in the rural area. These people live in poverty and are poorly educated. Their standard of living and education need to be raised before democracy could have a chance in China. Still, I do hope to see democracy taking roots in Chinese government within my lifetime.
