Absolutely amazing film. Gives you alot to think about. Jeremy Enigk (ex-Sunny Day Real Estate singer/writer) did the music to this movie. and as with everything Enigk touches, it is just indescribable how good it is. Another ignored movie, with music from another ignored genius.
What a great movie! dreamy, provoctive and thoughtful, demonstrating that we all share in the brokeness of this world, and yet within that brokeness there is meaning that resonates and what can be so attracting about the pathos so brilliantly displayed is that it allows us to feel rather than continue on with our harried lives, which end up distracting us from whats real and what's going on below the surface of the shiny veneer. Two things that move the heart: Beauty and affliction.
@RJude4ever I'm not sure there is a legitimate "why." it seems more about the notion that everyone is negative and how that seems to be somewhat contagious. The message that I pulled out was simply to be a better person and to try to put that "electricity" back into peoples' eyes.
it's pretty sad, but his mind-set doesn't explain his resort to murder. Leland was pretty narrow minded and selfish to think he knew what the retarded kid was going through, and what would be best for him. If that kid was given the choice of not existing, or existing as he was, I'm sure he would have chosen the latter, just to see his sisters or parents smile at him. So he would have envied other people and things, but who doesn't? Leland trusted his own mind too much, not knowing much else.
@gt22 In all honesty, I believe that it just was a crime of passion. Leland didn't particularly think that he would be freeing Ryan, but he thought it might release some of his own sadness.
few years ago, after watching this film, i started to think different way, i realized most of things in life, and since that film i cant stop think over stuffs in every step, yep im so glad
this film has one of the best endings in film history, and i mean that. As a whole the film is great, but i would say one of the best in history, but once Leland gets stabbed the ending contains some of the greatest quotes i've heard. "i think there are two ways you can see the world, you can either see the sadness behind everything... or you can choose to block it all out"
i totally agree with you but if you quote pls do it right.
"I think there are two ways you can see the world. Either see the sadness that's behind everything. Or you can choose to keep it all out. Your heart can't break if you don't let the world touch it."
This version is longer than the ones i have found on dvd, there are extra scenes and lines. Does anyone know if there is a second version available, or if it is only on european copies. i think the subtitles are in swedish.
Yes he did, but he did it for the boy's good. You should really watch the whole movie, it's really good, especially the way that Leland considered the life. The music is also great.
I don't know if I am crying because I am happy or sad! A movie must have a strong message if it's able to do that. So amazing and such a great cast. Again, thanks for posting!
I forgot to mention, this movie reminds me of "Manic" with Joseph Gordon Levitt. It has sort of the same story line, and Don Cheadle is also in the film. (And he plays a very similar role) So, if you liked this movie, go check out "Manic" (I think it is even posted here on youtube)
IThanks for posting it. Gosling is brilliant in this role. Does anyone know what are the songs playing in the 2 parts at the end, when he tells when he was in NY with Angela and when he tells that everybody will find a reason in all this....(amazing speech by the way). Please, help me! i'm looking for these songs for years now.I still don't know who plays.
That was deffinately a movie you shouldn't watch before bed cause you won't be able to stop thinking about all the worlds problems.... anyway it was great, even though I won't be able to fall asleep easily tonight.
ive been seriously depressed for awhile and i watched this movie. cant say it helped, or hurt... more so put what ive been feeling about lifes uselessness into words.
makes me want to write a book or something, to influence, to move people the way this movie and books like the stranger have to me...
ive watched this films about 5 times now, and i still feel kinda depressed afterwards, but the first time, i was exactly the same - i opened up a document on the pc and started writing - i hope you get further than i did - let me know if you finish, would love to give it a read.
i did end up writing just a short little piece, im going to expand on what ive written drastically and maybe someday right a book but for now it was just some thoughts i put down.
but if you want too read it comment my profile with your email (i can delete it after i email you) id love to get some feedback
Well if you consider people who are above the age of ten and use EITHER A) grammar properly, then yes, I am fucking awesome. OR B) grammar abnormally well, then yes, I am fucking awesome.
Asshat even if you make mistakes. Abnormally great? When I was 10 I knew that was far from correct.
I would love to see your essays where you start to insert letters in a bulletin format. I would recommend doing it for college applications. You'll get into Harvard if you keep it up!
P.S. "maybe someday right a book but for now it was just some thoughts i put down"

you write a novel...not right.
