my first exposure to jazz, and it seemed others just compared, something very special about him, his sound can instantly be recognized, perfect blend of legato and 8th note swing, listening to the drummer and just playing wonderfull melodic lines.
That's some scary stuff! Joe was a master of the horn. I'm so grateful to have been able to see him many times in the Bay Area through the years. The last time was at the old Yoshi's as the Double Rainbow CD came out. He did an a capella version of Lush Life that was mind bending. The place was half full. So sad. I walked out after that and thought to my self... either I better start shedding of give up playing. Thanx for posting this up!
Thanks for posting this. Joe owned it all. Harmonically, Rhythmically, Melodically, Phrasing and Articulation, Time Feel. Always an inspiration every time he picked up his horn. And one of the most humble human beings you could ever meet.
It's a travesty that the Hal Leonard publishing corp.has published the sixth edition Real Book with a embarrassingly error ridden version of Joe Henderson's Inner Urge. This tune is on par with the solar constant formula, not to mention being penned in the year of the dragon.!!!
He means that F blues is fairly easy to solo over, and even with that, the depth that a "normal" saxophone improviser could develop is so much less compared to Joe's interpretation on a tune even so difficultly keyed, and he plays it with such ease...

Geez he gets so many effects out of the horn and the note selection is equally genius... and always full of soul.

I'd like to see the whole tune--band sections too, much as I like Joe Henderson, put up everything you've got by the band. Don't be stingy.

He's phrasing so beautifully on this. Joe hears over Inner Urge like most musicians wish they could hear over an F blues.

ya...but what do you mean by the f blues comment? do u mean that he plays it as if it was a blues, with such ease?
