What i want to ask you is have there been any 'tragedy' in Saami people's history?? i heard things like; Saami people have been massacred and castrated in Sweden and Norway from 1920 to 1980. Nobody talks much about this. Is that true??

There has been a cultural opression - the nordic states have tried to eradicate the sami-language, and they also forbade the sami-religion, but there has never been any killing going on, probably couse the sami was such a non-aggressive people, so the state didn't see the need for it.

it is because of mixing with the other groups in scandinavia. my great garndfather was saami. but by saami culture, if you have the slightest bit saami blood, you are just as saami as any other saami. and anyone can be accepted into saami society. you must first adopt our culture though.

@Darkstorms15 My grandfather was mostly or entirely Saami but he was born in America and not in any Finnish records. Finnish law says their have to be records that mention the word "Lapp." Which most of the records don't, even if they are Sami. Even the oldest Enontekio parish books list only a few Raid Lappen and Fjell Lappen.

So I wouldn't get the automatic classification. I'm learning Northern Sami, how much other culture do I need?

Many Saami people are members of Haplogroup N, which originated in Siberia, other groups in Haplogroup N are the Yakuts, Nenets, and Samoyeds. The vast majority of peoples living on artic circle are of this lineage.

Sámi are definitely not Nenets - but Sámi can look like any other Nordic people, and some of them are quite dark, compared to Scandinavians in general, so to say that they're blonds is not always true, though many are. I don't think you can tell most Sámi apart from other Scandinavians, however.

Nenets people can be blond too, by the way, although they're obviously vastly different from the Sámi in general.
