Unlike some of the other Afro-Brazilian religions I've read that Umbanda forbids animal sacrifice. I like that about it. Do you practice it? Have you ever encountered anything that would be difficult to explain by ordinary means- for example, a medium providing specific information or evidence of a ghost or anything like that?
@ar4216 Yes, you're right. Umbanda doesn't accept any "animal elements" at all. This includes flesh, blood, fat or even fur/hair. And yes, I've been practicing it for the last 14 years now. These "anything difficult to explain" things you mentioned are a lot common. Especially on specific pieces of information (just like mentioning what I was thinking some time earlier - and even instantaneously - and never shared with anyone, for example)... Not unusual at all :)

@BabyGirlGoddess Candomble- Focuses on the Orisha (Orixa, etc.) Umbanda- focuses on spirits known as Exu, Pomba Gira, etc. etc. Completely different structure of ritual, spirits, and much more. BIG difference. I reccomend reading a book called "Magick in Brazil" for more info.

@natruska I've had the same problem. I'm not a part of Umbanda, but I am part of Haitian Vodou, so I know the feeling. This documentary is probably the equivalent of "Serpent and the Rainbow" for me.

Unfortunately National Geographic seems to have a commitment to the amount of researches and documentaries but not to the quality of the material they produces. A little bit of research on the beggining of Umbanda would reveal its true face, that is definetly not like that. For those who would like to learn more I would suggest reading about Zelio de Moraes and Gabriel Malagrida/ Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas.

There's no black magic in Umbanda. Black magic in Brazil is in a similar religion, called Quimbanda. Both are african-brazilian religions, with influences of Candomble, Christianism and indian's religions, but only Quimbanda sacrifices animals and uses the magic to do bad things.

There is Campaign coming up in London to sue National Geographic for this video.This is embarrassing how such a big company could allow this to happen,without double checking the right information.This totally opposite of what Umbanda is. The older Terreiros de Umbanda, those established before 1940, have not integrated these new trends and still practice the original rites and ceremonies in a simpler way, specially dedicating themselves to CHARITY WORKS, as preached by Zélio de Moraes and his group. Unlike some of the other Afro-Brazilian religions I've read that Umbanda forbids animal sacrifice. I like that about it. Do you practice it? Have you ever encountered anything that would be difficult to explain by ordinary means- for example, a medium providing specific information or evidence of a ghost or anything like that?

@ar4216 Yes, you're right. Umbanda doesn't accept any "animal elements" at all. This includes flesh, blood, fat or even fur/hair. And yes, I've been practicing it for the last 14 years now. These "anything difficult to explain" things you mentioned are a lot common. Especially on specific pieces of information (just like mentioning what I was thinking some time earlier - and even instantaneously - and never shared with anyone, for example)... Not unusual at all :)

I sincerely cannot believe that NatGeo - a source of knowledge that I have trusted until now - presented such poor documentary about a religion - my religion.
You simply cannot show the world a lady who wants her husband killed and tell people this is Umbanda.

Unfortunately National Geographic seems to have a commitment to the amount of researches and documentaries but not to the quality of the material they produces. A little bit of research on the beggining of Umbanda would reveal its true face, that is definetly not like that. For those who would like to learn more I would suggest reading about Zelio de Moraes and Gabriel Malagrida/ Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas.

There's no black magic in Umbanda. Black magic in Brazil is in a similar religion, called Quimbanda. Both are african-brazilian religions, with influences of Candomble, Christianism and indian's religions, but only Quimbanda sacrifices animals and uses the magic to do bad things.

As a very well educated woman all I can say about this trashy video produced by National Geographic (a magazine I USED TO ADMIRE AND READ) is that unfortunately the producers have lost the track. Instead of giving an overall picture of the religion they have just selected people who proclaim themselves as UMBANDISTAS because they PLAY with statues and DO BLACK MAGIC.
