  • the music at the end killed the mood god fucking dammit!!!!!!!!

  • I saw the special on espn and literally cried my eyes out. A man died doing what he loved I and only hope i die the same way.

  • This shows you that sports aren't just games, they're full of passion.

  • Show the great character of the man that i his near death state he attempted to get to his feet straight away... A true basketball legend, RIP.

  • @TheBlackcat239 Its crazy because maybe if they stand him up his breathing and blood flows differently and maybe he doesnt die...maybe his head clears and he can fill his lungs better...its easier to just relax and let go when you are laying there...i think and wish they would have stood him up and got him a quik drink of water...You never know...but when God calls he calls rip baller.

  • @MrSlik25 His heart was in cardiac arrythmia. It wasn't his lungs. Standing him up woutd've been the worst thing to do. He had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and unfortunately, his doctors let him play with this condition. The condition is often mis-diagnosed, especially with athletes as it often mimics athlete's heart.

  • @mcgyver62 Well you should have been at the game to save him man@@

  • I think he would have been another Charles Barkley.

  • there is an episode in the programme the dead zone like this except the guy lives

  • sad thing to happen rip

  • Well, at least he died doing the thing he loved, poor guy.

  • and whats messed up is I read the defibulator that was there for him wasn't courtside like it was supposed to be... ugh ... I don't even know the guy but it's hard losing young people and Im young myself

  • The part immediately following the clip is probably one of the most powerful pieces of filmmaking I've ever seen. With this slow instrumental musical interlude (that you hear at the end of the clip), they panned to the 5 people being interviewed and just showed each of them for about 5-7 seconds each....in complete silence fighting back tears. Bravo to the filmmakers of this documentary for capturing the true sadness and shock of this tragic event.

  • Hank's greedy family suing after death ruined this documentary for me, Their son wanted to play Basketball and he died doing what he loved, Nobody is responsible for his death. If his coaches had banned him from playing ball they probably would have sued for that too. His family have disrespected his memory with their greedy ways.

  • 9th grade...I remember reading about this in 'The National' newspaper in the morning before I went to class. It hit hard because I, being a resident of Boston, had already dealt with an athlete I watched dying with Len Bias back when I was 11 years old. Shortly after Hank, Reggie Lewis goes. More care should have been taken in regards to his health condition at LMU;

  • i cant watch stuff like this when im drinking , it makes me wanna burst into tears!!!!

  • one of the greatest athletes ever. RIP.

  • Hank Gathers was a real man. One of a kind champion.

  • RIP Hank

  • he just didn't want to lie down, he wanted to continue the game-he was awesome :(

  • This is so sad :(

  • RIP Hank

  • This makes me tear up every time.

  • This was a true MAN.... Politics needs a man that's down like this - knowing he's down - to try his hardest to get up. RIP my dearest brother. I'm white but this guy is a brother! I cry now.

  • @funkfo...i guess you don't know what it is to have a dream and want to live out your dreams to help your family....at 23 years old you believe your invincible Most of our mistakes are when were in our 20s.. unfortunately it cost him his life..No one want to live in poverty his determination has proven that..however i highly doubt his mother thought of dollar amounts.. thats her attorneys Job as i am doing the research for this particular case..im finding his death could have been prevented

  • not sure how I feel about all the family money grubbing they did after he died. Suing for 32 million? Of course they didn't get that but if the school hadn't of settled for 1.5 then the Gather family would have got ZERO. Set aside how much of a baller and true athlete he was.....he had a condition and one that he ignored. How is that anyone else's fault but his own? Mom didn't want to stay in the projects so she sued since her meal ticket was now dead. These types of lawsuits are ridiculous

  • @Funkfo Ridiculous? How much $ did Hank bring to Loyola? Ticket revenues and media attention? More than 1.5, but 1.5 was propbably a fair estimation, cash-wise. But future income? You can't have children making decisions to play against some imaginary condition, a little weekness, the ocassional dizziness - In the lore of Sports Heroism, players always overcome. Loyola failed to put Hank before the System, Loyola coaches & docs in charge of his fate let him down 1.5 ain't much. Ask MJ.

  • :( uuuooo....

    R.I.P. :´(

  • state your point without name calling. It makes a person even thogh quite educated, look less intelligent.

  • I remember watching this game when i was little girl and looking at the tv screen in shock and disbelief such a talented basketball player who died too soon

  • Miklos Feher and Hank Gathers. Died like champs

  • RIP ZYZZZ

  • I never insinuated that I was a doctor, however I am an EKG Technician, Medical Laboratory assistant. Therefore I know more about this that the typical Idiot out in the streets, But mostly I know because in 1991 I joined the armed forces and I was honorably discharged because they found a heart murmur (abnormal heart sound). It was caused by the Cardiomyopathy. If you are healthy be thankful, you sarcastic DICK SUCKING, STUPID,son of a BITCH, ASSHOLE... Chris L.A. CALIF

  • @ortiz3839zz You talk nothing like a technician.

  • He had a generic condition. In 1990 it was known as (IHSS) or Intraventricular hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis. Nowadays it is known as Ventricular Cardiomyopathy. It is an abnormal growth of the heart muscle. On the video they mention that prior he had fainted. It is common for this to occur. It is caused by irregular heart rhythms known as arrythmias. He dies when his heart beats too fast (Tachycardia) and his heart muscle is overworked, Finally it dies. I should know I have this decease.

  • @ortiz3839zz ok, "doctor"...smh

  • He was a real athlete...

  • 44ever!!!

  • RIP Hank. the fcking music in the end ruined it

  • what cause that: drugs? steroids? just tv ratings aprove that, his famlily never

  • "lay down!"

"FUCK THAT, I WANT SOME BASKETBALL"

    dead.

oh shit, went out like a real champ!

  • listverse brought me here.

  • @viqster hehe me too

  • @viqster Congratulations. You have officially, no life.

  • @leeofbacup And congrats to you. You failed to type your sentence correctly, and are talking trash on someone for visiting a website that is knowledgeable and informative. I guess being dumb is the "cool" thing these days.

  • Comment removed

  • @sean1256 I was going to point out the irony of your comment. But as you are an American you will not understand it. I will be the bigger person here and walk away knowing that I have won. Thank you for the laugh... Fucking idiot. hahahahaha

  • @leeofbacup Nothing I typed up was grammatically incorrect. Regardless, the fact that you said that you "know you have won" really shines a light in on how pathetic of a person you really must be. What did you "win" exactly? A YouTube "diss contest?" That must be a big moment for you considering you are making such a big deal about your irrelevant "win."

  • @viqster Me too!!

  • @gookdick you're a fucking disgusting person

  • @Lassannn No he was faking his death. He loves c0ck though.

  • "I dont wanna lay down"- he died doing what he loved.

  • rip hank

  • R.I.P Hank gone but never forgotten!!!

  • R.I.P Hank Gathers. He died playing the game he died, I hope his family is doing well. R.I.P Hank

  • @NBA123567 He died playing the game he died?

  • @SoulEndeverAfter Lmao xD I meant to put he died playing the game he loved. Ha sorry and thanks for catching it

  • RIP Hank!

  • I regret watching the final seconds of this video. The way he just lays down is too real

  • Little known fact: the white guy #30 at 1:21 guarding Lowery is Miami Heat coach Eric Spoelstra.

  • @MrPresident2032 u.s.a. today and espn.com have published articles about this in the last 48 hours. not unknown anymore. rip hank.

  • @MrPresident2032 You know so much but it's a shame that you think Eric Spoelstra is a white guy, and that's a known fact Smartass!

  • @MrPresident2032 Spolestra isnt white. He's filipino lol

  • Interestingly, Portland Pilots have black bands - usually worn in posthumous remembrance of someone - on left shoulders; anyone know why?

  • if only he kept taking his medication he wud of been still here, RIP hank :(

  • @INT3RGALACTIK

I know. Decreasing his medication was a bad idea. Yeah, it made him sluggish on the court but it kept him alive. I know he wanted to make it to the NBA to provide for his family, but you can't provide for anyone if you're dead. It was a deadly gamble to decrease medication for cardio myothopy, and he lost.

  • @jbobbster Coincidentally, his family got settlements in two lawsuits, one with the school and one with the cardiologist, that netted them 2 million dollars.

  • @jbobbster first of all u can provide for someone if ur dead. u get insurance money, and if u have stack money in the bank and leave it to ya family thats means when ur dead u still providing mister know it all.enough of the medical stuff he was a great guy and player and it was just his time. just like the white kid that died in michigan after he made his shot. its so real when god allow them there last glory before he takes us. rip hank gone but not forgotten.

  • Absolutely scary - I can only imagine what went through the minds of the players/coaches, fans, and families as Gathers died right before their eyes.

  • I just put a defibrillator in a patient about 2 weeks ago that had a similar issue. These rhythms are induced by stress/exercise and you often have long runs of rapid heart beats that stop and then start again. This is sometimes felt to come in waves by the person who either passes out and wakes up or goes into a lethal rhythm.

My patient had over 50 episodes of "nodding off" before he went into a lethal rhythm and had to be shocked. he had 3 more shocks before i stabilized him.

  • Poor guy...

  • RIP fam

  • RIP cuz

  • Reminds me of Antonio Puerta... He collapsed, was able to walk out of the court, then suffered 3-4 more heart attacks and died. RIP Hank.

  • I have put this as my "favourite" but i feel disrespectful.. im just interested with Hank and his Basketball!

  • I have put this as my "favourite" but i feel disrespectful.. im just interested with Hank and his Basketball!

  • @Gabby21394 Don't feel that way, I think you're paying tribute to his memory by doing so

  • His last words were " I dont want to lay down"....he went out like a champ.

  • it's a real shame! this team made it to the elite eight without him, imagine if he hadn't tragically died.

  • RIP

  • RIP Hank you were way to young to go!

  • Comment removed

  • just like that, the heart can go, an artery can pop in the brain for an aneurysm.. life is not usually predictable. enjpy it as we can!

  • God bless Hank. He will always be missed. And thank you to the Loyola Marymount basketball team that made the magical run in 1990 in honor of Hank. I hadn't followed them until that point, but me and millions of Americans were die-hard LMU fans during that magical time. I'm sure Hank was smiling from above...

  • Rest In Peace to my cousin Eric Hank Gathers u are truly Missed

  • @SweeptheLegYo could you maybe elaborate a little on how I am wrong?.....hmm okay you can't that's what I thought looks like since no one knows your identity you feel you can come here and undermine any single philosophy you see for absolutely no reason even if it is a heartfelt, loving, christian based sentimental gesture which is extended to the deceased and those of us who are heading towards the inevitable, but that's fine you have a right to, and I have a right to completely ignore you!

  • Gotta think guys like Cuttino Mobley, who remember watching this live, just as I do, had this in mind when they decided to retire early.

  • Jesus also died to conquer death itself...to show us that we don't have to be fearful of death anymore. Death doesn't have to mean entering into an endless void of darkness, terror, and despair, death can now mean a new, richer, greater life in Jesus Christ! Thank you Jesus, thank you lord for saving the human race from eternal doom that death once brought and giving us the gift of eternal life! I LOVE YOU

  • @m5ww32 The funniest part is you'll never know you're wrong.

  • I was going to westchester high school at the time which was right up the street from loyola marymount university. When Hank collapsed and passed away, It was like we all lost a family member, as an up and coming basketball player, we looked up to him and bo kimble and aspired to be like them. Thanks for the memories Hank! He left a positive lasting affect on so many people.

  • i get chills when i see this

  • very sad and what just happened to Wes Leonard is just a terrible thing that had to happened

  • This is one of the saddest things to watch in sports history, is it wrong if I'm a grown man and tear up just a little bit each time I see this? And i'm not even close to a Loyola Marymount fan....

  • Very hard to watch.

  • It happeded the same day I was born today 21 years ago

  • Comment removed

  • So eerie -- just heard about the death of Wes Leonard and didn't realize today was the anniversary of the death of Hank. I live a few blocks from LMU & attended almost every game that wonderful, magical, horrible 1989-90 season. I was in attendance that day. Hank collapsed, he sat up for a moment, then collapsed once more. He never moved again. And the absolute silence of Gersten was punctured by the scream of his mother, who was watching her son die. It was awful and I'll never forget it.

  • @MrMattHagen That is so sad :(

  • this is so weird. I just searched this randomly not knowing that he died on this day. rip hank

  • this is painful to watch.....dang

  • Derek, if you read this, I still think about you man and my heart goes out to you and your family. Hank was a great man.

  • Rest in Peace Hank. :(

  • This is really sad. I was a ballboy for the CSUN basketball team who Hank Gather's younger brother Derek played for. Hank came to a game shortly before he died and I got to meet him. He was a really nice guy with a big heart. I felt horrible for Derek after his brother collapsed. I was only a kid back then.. Heartbreaking.

  • I've only heard about this guy through this 30 for 30.

23 years old man, thats sad.

    RIP

  • I had the pleasure of going to Dobbins with Hank & his brother. That team was so hot.....Hank, Bo, Derrick, Overton.....Hot!!!!! The night Hank left us I went to bed early & didn't watch the game. I woke up late so I didn't watch the news. I was going to a trade school back then. I arrived at school & everything was normal......until I looked out of the cafeteria window. On the window ceil was the Daily News with the story of Hanks death. Hank had a passion for the game & life! Never forgotten!

  • So sad......

  • I was a 14 year old Duke fan thousands of miles away from LMU and I hung a newspaper clipping showing Hank dunk on my bedroom wall. I don't know. Didn't try to analyses it or come up with some deep meaning. I just felt it was important to remember him. I think Gathers's death had a kind of raw emotional impact on a lot of fans.

  • I was born the on 3/04/90, the same day he died

  • Life sucks and even though it happened 20 years ago, it's still very sad to see now. RIP

  • sad depressing and makes me sick

  • Bo knows basketball!

  • Another nice thing about this story is all the characters are unique. Westhead had an original offense and Gathers and Kimble were not your typical players. They all led this team that did not have much success prior or after. Also, both Gathers and Kimble were from Philadelphia they both went to USC and then transfer to Loyola Marymount. The odds of all these things working for one team are unlikely. Even more unlikely was the untimely death of Gathers on the court.

  • The whole story as interesting to me as I was not familiar with it. I had Bo Kimble rookie cards when I was a kid (1990-91 Hoops). I was also familiar with Paul Westhead (He always makes me think of Paul Westphal). from his tenure with the Lakers. Knowing that he coached the Lakers briefly before Pat Riley. The whole Gathers dying on the court makes me think of the movie the 6th Man (1997). As another player dies on a dunk and helps the team as a ghost.

  • @24Reference yea man i like tht movie

  • I agree with your statements he seemed a little small to play the Power Forward in the NBA. The first player that comes to mind is Kurt Thomas, as Kurt Thomas was a big scorer at TCU and in the NBA he was a solid role player on many decent teams. Kurt Thomas played more than ten seasons. I don't know how they could have taked care of the condition that eventually ended Gathers life. To have my death by televised (even if accidental) would make me feel violated. (Continued)

  • @24Reference

1st, Thomas was a natural power forward at 6'9", he played center in the nba and there he was undersized, 2nd Gathers was barely undersized at 6'7" and was 1 of 3 people ever along with Thomas and Xavier Mcdaniel to lead div 1 in scor and reb. I wonder why they remind you of each other. 3rd, Thomas was the player he was in college, showed it his first year until an ankle injury needing surgery ended that yr and was re-injured next year again needing surgery. He never was the same.

  • @24Reference

next time know what your talking about so my ears don't feel violated

  • do you guys think the doctor shouldve urged him to lay down even though he felt like getting up?

  • @2zion13 i think he might've collapsed if he had gotten up, which would've resulted in head injuries

  • @2zion13 i was thinking something similar. he should of he least let him sit up or anything but lay all the way down..

  • RIP Hank. God bless.

  • @ilax277 oops! i meant to thumbs up :/

  • Poor guy

  • Wow, terrible job on the creation of this clip. You can't end with a guy dying on a basketball court and then just cut to your title card with a jungle beat in the background.

  • @Bobbysboy

It's just a clip, you have to watch the whole show.

  • Interesting that Loyola Marymount lost to UNLV in the tournament. UNLV had three future NBA Players Larry Johnson, Stacy Augmon and Greg Anthony. Where as Bo Kimble's NBA Career was cut sort. I wonder how Hank Gathers NBA Career would have been.

  • @24Reference he probably would have been no more than a role player, he might have been a star, but i get the feeling he would have been no more than a key player who produces, but not a nba star, but that's just me. who knows. but just how he died on that court is scary. one minute, he's okay, the next he's dead, that's just creepy.

  • 1:30

  • Could Hank Gathers be alive today or was his condition going to eventually kill him at a younger age than he would be today?

  • @bertmustin He had a heart murmur it was controlled by medication but the medication made him groggy and affected his game so he did not take it.

  • @thumpernovember

I do remember the special talking about Gathers going off his medication. That helps answer my question. Thank you

  • @thumpernovember It wouldn't of mattered even if he had taken his medicine its still a risk

  • Comment removed

  • @AlexPate5

NO it could have mattered.... He was taking a beta blocker which slows the heart rate and helps control arrhythmia... Unfortunately he was taking inderal which has no beta selective properties so it make you very tired and it's probably why he lowered the dose... Current meds are more cardio specific and could have helped him more without the tiredness... that way he could a taken a high dose to protect his heart from arrhythmia.... Ultimately he needed a ICD with meds...

  • wow. I remember the movie, Hank Gathers' stroy where Victor Love played Gathers. So so sad.

  • His last words were "I don't want to lay down!" Hank Gathers means alot to me! #basketball

  • that is so sad

  • you can be snatched into eternity any second...please make sure you have repented of you sinful ways and put ALL your trust in Jesus Christ as the one who paid for all you sins

  • @weRwilsons stfu this man died a sorrowfull death and all you can do is try to fucking convert people you sick bastard! MEET YOU IN HELL FAG

  • @ubom2 Yes,I care about your soul so much that I want to warn you of the Judgement to come. It's going to be a very fearful day. The worst this Earth has ever seen. I don't want to convert you, that's the job of the Holy Spirit. But if what I am saying is true, you would think I was 'sick' for not warning people of that day. The good news of the Gospel is that you can have peace in your heart knowing that God is so good, that He died for bad men such as ourselves.

  • @weRwilsons Good word.

  • @weRwilsons Nice to see your willing to share your faith in a non-typical setting.

  • @weRwilsons Amen brother!

  • He awakened for a minute because as his ventricular fibrillation was starting he a had few seconds of stabilization, CPR would not have cured the issue- he needed immediate synchronized electrical cardioversion via a shock-hence the issue here. if you watch the full video of his death the team doctors have the defibrillator on hand and next to the athlete but NEVER hook it up for the ECG to treat the issue. It was so readily available to save him, but not used. RIP Thx, athletic trainer

  • CP3vsKobe: Yeah and I have swampland in Arizona.

  • I'm curious? If Hank hadn't laid down and was able to walk and get his blood flowing again, would the outcome had been different? I mean, I know the situation would still reoccur, but for that time I think they shouldn't have laid him down. Sucks to see something like this! R.I.P. H.G.!!!

  • @flasha8lebr8r11 I read somewhere that he suffered Ventricular Tachycardia prior to his death. Standing up wouldn't have helped, would've been worse by increasing oxygen demand. His only hope at that moment was CPR and a Hospital.

  • wow i still cant believe this, im 14 and my mom went out with Hank Gathers ! she was there for the 1st collaspe but she wasnt at the game when we collasped again, because something happened with them so sad! his book is awesome you should read it

  • I like to see the full footage of that documentary.

  • i was very lucky to see Hank Gathers play 3 times, i was truly saddened by his death, he was the best.

  • @SFFOOL76 Oh yeah? That's cool! And how good was he?

  • Wow...seeing that just makes your heart stop....R.I.P

  • very sad ... :'(

  • @olajuwongathers It's, c-o-u-s-i-n, genius. C-u-i-s-i-n-e relates to food.

  • wow dats my cuisine

  • @olajuwongathers Wow. What does he taste like?

  • wow dats my cuisine

  • very sad!
