I absolutely adore Gretsch drums. I am a Jazz drummer, so my kit is a Catalina Club Jazz in White Marine Pearl that I did out with Fiberskyn heads and a set of vintage 50s cymbals. Luckily for me, the Jazz kit is one of the cheapest Gretsch kits out there, yet it is still the best kit I have ever owned. Gretsch is so versatile and it's great to see Gretsch drums standing up to rock too, like is this great video. You and I are two totally different drummers, but we have our love of Gretsch!
I love Gretsch drums. The sound is far better than anything else out there for the money. I originally bought a Catalina Stealth kit for the looks and gigging--but even the lower end Catalina series with Mahogany shells sounds great. I upgraded last year to the Renown Maples and fell in love with the sound. I won't play anything else. My Renowns sound better than any DW, Sonor or Yamaha kit. I've had compliments at live gigs and in the studio on the tone and warmth of my drums...
@russdonruss That is so awesome to hear! I too love the Gretsch Renown kits. While I was on the road this year, I had a couple of gig's were I would play my kit one night, and then I would have to play a back line kit the next. It didn't matter what brand the back line kit was, they NEVER held a candle to my Gretsch drums. Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching.
@bartrobley haha yeah i know, i was just making a little joke, just the way you said it on the vid just struck me as a bit funny. keep the vids coming btw, very helpful.
@sticksbangskins Oh OK. Ya that was a voice over. I didn't say it clear on the take so we had to over-dub it. I always though it was funny too. I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching
@IsaacParrack95 No, Gibraltar is a Chinese company. They just (smartly) partnered with gretsch. Incidentally, there is a review in this months modern drummer of the purewood oak. As I knew: it's a better/warmer sounding kit than yamaha.
The purewood kits simply have to be seen and played in person. The newest are rosewood and an oak. The oak is so dazzling it looks yamaha oak look plain, and for less money! Gretsch's 30 degree bearing edge and superb construction gives them the best warm tone you can get.
Cool, it is nice to hear the walnut Gretsch which I hadn't heard up to this point, as usual they are the BEST sounding drums ever! I bought a USA Custom used years ago and I cant believe how great they sound, the most amazing thing is that they always sing and sound like Gretsch in any room I play in, I can't say that of any other company and trust me I used to change my mind on kits every week it seemed, I wont budge from Gretsch, THE GREATEST I AGREE!!!
@Monsterdrumma I heard the walnut and the cherry purewood kits in person. Both are incredibly beautiful looking, and sounding kits. IMO: the purewoods simply sound better than DW and a lot of other drums.
Yes, the Renown maple is a killer kit. It has cast hoops, and silver sealer on the inside of the shells. They are awesome kits. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
I'm looking at getting the Gibraltar 5600 Hardware Pack for my Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz, would you say that's a good combination? Is Gibraltar's stuff pretty sturdy?
Thanks for the question. The 5600 is real good stuff. The 9600 series is obviously their most sturdy hardware. If you are doing a lot of gigs, setting it up and tearing it down a lot, I would go 9600. If you are just going to be playing for your own pleasure and practicing at home, the 5600 series will be great. To your last question, YES! Gibraltar makes the best hardware around!
Thanks Bro. Maple is great, however I really like the walnut kit. In my opinion it is the best sounding kit they have ever made. It's very warm. If you can find one get it. I think they only made 100 of them.
I love Gibraltar. I'm using two of there small Stealth racks and they have been working out great. I'm not sure were it is manufactured. I've never used Mapex hardware.
Some drums can be a little temperamental when trying to tune. I start with the bottom head making sure the drum is tuned to the same pitch at each lug and that there are no wrinkles. Then go to the top head and do the same thing. Then go back to the bottom head and tune it just a little higher than the top. I have a new DVD out on set up and tuning called Drums ASAP. It is on Centerstream / Hal Leonard. Please look for it. I will try to post some videos soon. Thanks for watching.
hey bart i know this is random but for our catalina fusion maple set i CANNOT get the 14 tom tunned the way i want it to, any thoughts man much appreciated thx man
for only 500$ at guitar center i got the gretsch catalina maple drum set ( cherry maple) and they are amazing! 10,12,14, and a free 16! just that good the bass drum is so good u dont need to put a single thing in the inside, AT ALL! i love gretsch may be my 2nd kit but this the best investment i made this yr, and i am 18

ATTENTION!! No I meant Parradiddle. If you listen, what I say is "Two paradiddle-diddles and one paradiddle." Count them - RlrrllRlrrllRlrr Then it turns around LrllrrLrllrrLrll 16 on both. Nice try though.

Its because its shit., poor design. Cymbals/drums resonate truer on solid stands, not shit like this.
