2nd edition was D&D at it's best, it was all downhill from there. I hated the 3rd ed bastardization of classes (Gygax also hated it) Also hated sorcerers and their overpowered-ness. The whole fun of being a mage was in FINDING your spells in crypts and dungeons and ancient libraries (depending on how generous the dm was) but the sorcerer spoiled all that, plus in 3rd edition you gained 2 spells on every level up as a mage which was stupid. its like pulling spells out your ass.
Pretty cool. I myself have only experienced 3.5, and 4.0 (unfortunately I got over excited about 4.0, so disappointing...) I also have some experience in World of Darkness and My personal favorite, Call Of Cthulhu.
Because I care about flavor over crunch, I think the 2e book is the best D&D version ever written. The item tables are absolutely wonderful- there's nothing like a fighter roping a keg of ale to his back just because it suits his character. And that's what this book does, it give you tools. It may not always tell you how to use them, but that's what roleplaying is about.
I loved this book and still have it myself, then again I love the fluff. My campaigns are fluff first crunch second..this book and some of the stuff in it...fond, fond memories for my players. BUT...didn't use it verbatim...no chains of stores in my world. For me..a little too hard magic to use that.
I disagree with your opinion of 2e I personally think it was the best edition but that is what opinions are for. I do agree with your review of the Catalog. The Catalog and the Magic Enyclopedia were the best supplements produced for ALL editions combined. I understand that people have their own favorite editions but I do believe that 2e had the best supplements.
I got all 3 core books for $15 each from a gaming store. Pretty good deal, seeing as the total was less than 1 of the 3e books.

@krawnian I stumble upon older gaming books at yard sales sometimes. It's really hit or miss but sometimes you get lucky.
