  • 757,757 veiws awesome

  • Looks great like REAL rocks.

  • after you put the gasoline set it up with fire LOL xD

  • You are cool

  • I'm working on a little garden R.R. with grandson.....this is really going to be helpful for my scenery..thanx for the idea !!

  • Hmm, I like the etching, fast evaporating solvents will eat foam, give a fractal rather than smooth finish. Splats of paint spritz bottle wash good too. But result looks like a child's drawings. As blue sky and clouds, not very real.

3 suggestions: Force "aerial perspective" by progressively lightening the dark colors and *slightly* darkening the light ones. on 'further back' peaks. Use light color for 'lit' slopes, dark for shadowed slopes. Distant peaks should appear smaller scale. Now I try.

  • wait... is that a joke? house hold hacker was behind the "paper plate speaker" hoax

  • Yay thank-you for this Method now I am make my TOMICA Muffle Mountain for Future Videos!

  • I have listened to this video many times but can't figure out the % of water to use with the paints. I think the brown maybe 20% and the white 80%. Please, I need to know because I plan to try this soon. Awesome video. Thanks!

  • realistic? LOL nice try

  • you sir are a special effects genius.

  • Hey im doing a greek diorama and have a budget of 100$ im sure i can go like 20 over but i need to make mountains a small figure of apollo and how to make a cloud for apollo to stand on so if u have any help for me tell me.

  • like some of your time-saving painting ideas.

one idea I use is spray paint: it has the same effect on the foam as the gasoline, it etches it away. so sometimes I do a grey primer spray paint coat first, using the spray as an etching tool also. mask required. attaching a vid with some of that. works for concrete look also.

  • did the bridge demolition feature in Tropic thunder?

  • cool leo

  • looks really good but that sky backdrop really gives it away, think a photo would work much better.

  • Errr... instead of crashing (or bombing) an ertl, which are kinda hard to find, why not just make a cast of one, like a diesel clone? If the engine has bomb damage, (or is a sunt engine) you don't have to go THAT major on the engine's color and design.

  • ur videos are pro

  • awsome .could you please make a tutorial on how to build the engine sheds,

  • I'm Doing the same thing (Excluding Gasoline) I Pick some Foam off to make Edges

  • Can this work for G scale layouts?

  • I really enjoy watching your videos, very interesting.

    Thumbs UP!

  • This reminds me of a company called "Woodland scenics", most of their stuff for making model train layouts are like this. But that costs money, you do it for free. Really, this is some of the best work I've seen. And using ertl models is something that most people won't do.

  • i made this but i have to say it looks awful :(

  • Cool Video Leo Must have taken a while to make :)

  • one of your most interesting tutorials, im planning on using this method with some mountains im gonna make for a new vid! 5 stars!

  • hope it works out, and remember the petrol (gas) etching is something to take very carefully, so easy to over etch the foam and melt it.

  • napalm mountains nice

  • yes, your the first to notice..lol!

  • dang you would think out of the 253,882 people that viewed this some one would have thought of it lol

but i do love the smell of napalm

    victory!

just keep those things away from flame lol

  • comments are funny animals, you can have hundreds or thousands land on a video but only a few really capture a unique point of view.

I feel many comments are fed from the previous comments of just basic spam.

The comments are also very revealing just who is on the tube.

  • This is a excellent tutorial video.

    I'm sure to try it.

    Thank you for uploading.

I first used to make mountains with plaster of paris.

  • Bridge over the river Quai (not sure on spelling)

  • Anna and the King!

  • GASOLINE??????!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic!

    Great sense of humor.

Never thought I'd make a video about paint drying.

    Great!

  • Good one Leo!

  • hey leo is this project safe?Like gasoline and foam sounds dangerous

  • Well explained Leo, and very useful to all aspiring animators.

  • Ha I love this sorta shit, well done mate.

  • Funniest thing ever

  • Hi,

    once again, great stuff!

I helped to build a club layout. we glued sand and gravel to foam. painted it black, dry brushed it white, painted it with earthy toned washes and then applied the grass and bushes and so on.....

check my tumut videos for examples.

  • fantastic looking terrain ...great vid

  • Can I post a video of this for my friends on our website. We have a miniature village crafting site. You are fabulous! I love the way these mountains came out.

  • Thats fine, once a video goes online I believe anything can happen to it, usually people never ask..

  • wow this as give me some tips on making a vid im thinking of doin

  • Nice, but not environmental friendly.

  • It does recycle old foam boxes..!

  • My my, you really know you stuff. Well done - keep up the good work. :)

  • I don't really know much at all I have been lucky to see real scenic artists at work and I am just doing my version of their amazing skill set

  • very informative and clever

    I encourage more

  • Wow, verry smart!

  • it's interesting

  • Great video and even more Explosions!!! I like it.

  • Has anyone guessed what film it was yet? I am still racking my brains thinking of what film it could be.

  • no...but if you did some research about me, you could see what films I had worked on..

It had a huge American female movie star in it, she was a child actor and is in more ways than one a stunner, in real life some may say she looks very plain Jane.

Does this help..!, one of my videos has my real name at end title, I left it on there by mistake..opps..!

  • Ah - I shall investigate!!! Thanks for the tip Leo!

  • Was The movie Bridge on the river kwai

  • Getting close, correct subject country, wrong bridge.

  • Would this movie be "Anna And The King" made in 1999, currently banned in Thailand?

  • Correct answer, well done.

The film was shot in Malaysia in 1998.

Please send me a personal mail in youtube with your full postal address, I will send you a little treat.

  • Well, beaten to it, but I did eventually find out that it was "Anna and the King" - once again I am very impressed Leo.

  • wow, how creative are u!!! hugs from xjoeyx

  • (while it drys shout at a bird!) lol

    1000/10

  • Very entertaining video. Nicely done, and thanks for the props! :)

  • AWESOME! YOu r srsly the most professional "thomas" modeller on YouTube!

  • hello leo

    volker

  • Leo that was really cool! I really enjoyed that! Guess who I'm sending all my recycle to? YOU! LOL! :) 5 creative instructional stars! :) Hey can I send the kids over for craft? LOL!

  • Gabe, just catching up on some old messages, this foam box video is really performing well, I never thought it had an audience.

  • Excellent instructional video. Good info well presented.

  • get out those explosions next!

  • Very nice work.

  • On a scale of 1 to 10 this was an 11! Very informative and entertaining!

  • THIS IS AWSOME!!!!!

  • Fan-flipping-tastic!

  • Suppringly effctive, I like the way you presented the vid too, pollished. :)

  • this video is really starting to power, I never thought something like this would work.

    never underestimate the youtube audience

  • amazing

  • awesome

  • The bird looks like a juvenile Koel, a kind of Cuckoo.. but don't take my word for it! This was most educational.. :) :)

  • Sir, thats what I thought, but its being fed by Wattlebirds, I think the Koel is known for laying eggs in other birds nests. I have never seen a young one, maybe I have now.

This year the numbers of adult Koels around the house was huge, they are very noisy birds, the male is a stunning black with a bright red eye, the female is difficult to spot due to her drab brown / tan feathers.

  • Well, if the young bird in the video is being fed by Wattlebirds, then it's 99.9% a Koel.. the real mother having chosen a Wattlebird nest to lay its egg. If you have plenty of adult Koels, then you'll most likely have quite a few babies too.. after all, that's nature!! So I think we can quite confidently say it's a juvenile Koel.. As for the bridge, River Kwai comes to mind, but it didn't look like that.. :)

  • cool vdeo 100/100 leokimvideo

  • That was a really interesting video Leo. Just a shame that I did all the polystyrene work on my layout yesterday! I used filler on mine which over all makes it stronger. But doesnt get the random effect like the gasline etching. How do you think of these great methords?

  • Excellent work! I may just do that myself! they look brilliant!

  • Right on,Really cool video

  • Wow very interesting.

  • Nice technique, I must try that sometime.

  • it was a very different sort of video to do, its proving to be a winner

  • That was great. I would never have the patients to do that. I like that you put Thomas the train on there :)Did you do the cloud background too? I was thinking the clouds look to repaticious and takes away from your beautiful mts. thank you sooo much for sharing this with us. 5 stars

  • hey interesting tips, i used to use those boxes for scenery for my LOTR, miniatures they work great

  • thanks for all the great tips, leo!

  • WOW,That Looks Awesome. You Are Very Good at Building Things =)
