Sundin took the leafs close twice, Gilmour and Clark were awesome but how much postseason action did they give the leafs? I ask that for real, I moved to Canada in 1998 and Sundin is one of the biggest reasons why I'm now a huge Leafs fan, I was lucky that the very year I moved to Toronto I saw them make the trip to the conference final. I would always remember Mats Sundin as a leader, he did not need to talk, he led with actions, goals and points speak louder than words or fists
anyone who questions anything sundin as captain, needs to get their head checked. He is a god in Toronto and is unequivocally the best captain in leafs history
Toronto doesn't retire numbers, they honour them, because they have had a lot of greats over the years, there would be too many numbers that couldn't be user, but I agree.
@asmba retire numbers is dumb. can't believe people actually do that all they deserve is to have their name honor. just because a guy came before me i can't wear his #? before you know it we have numbers hitting 100. guess we should retire little league numbers too. the number doesn't make the player good the player himself does! honor him and the name. nobody cares about the number you wear or choose to wear.
i agree completely, he never had anybody along side his like the stars of today, Crosby has Malkin, and Datsyuk has Zetterberg, those are all good examples from the last 2 cup winning teams
what a coincidence my favorite player gets traded to the leafs also my fave team on the year of my birth day thats sick :)

man only if Sundin was still a bit younger, him, Kessel and Lupul would own everyone.

No elite winger?
Alex Mogilny.. although it was short, he was one of the best.
TheAogGuy 9 months ago
the only really good winger Sundin ever played with was Mogilny.

Hard to see him leave the Leafs, but the leadership didn't really seem to want him and I think he felt that so he left.
One thing that I always thought is that he never had another player in is line that was almost or as good as him.
He had to carry the team a lot, he was a league of his own inside the Leafs.
