@nollieflip1 well, my favourite is Today's Active Lifestyles, but this track is off Cor Crane Secret

which is probably more listenable... i have got some of their later output but the tracks are not as

inventive in my opinion.

Sonic Youth and Polvo are only alike in that they are noise bands and use unconventional tuning. But Polvo kept melodic conventions close and made them astoundingly complex while Sonic Youth kind of had a more fuck-it, let's-be-avant -garde attitude. Neither band is better than the other, but comparing them is ignoring the strengths and styles of the musicians and going solely by similar sounds. If we compared bands with that approach, most bands using standard tuning would "sound similar."

@cyroxxx Indie rock isn't different, weird, experimental, or revolutionary. Why? Because indie rock isn't a genre of music, nor is it a specific "sound". Indie means that the band records for an "independent label". A group of kids literally farting Black Flag covers into a distorted amplifier can be an "indie band", all they have to do is sign a record deal with Matador!

To be fair, yes, the music that all the brain dead media clowns keep labeling "indie rock" is just Creed with whiny...

I dunno, i listen to Polvo a lot more than Sonic Youth. I always kind of considered Polvo as a "college rock" band whereas Sonic Youth are more self-consciously arty. Sonic Youth will always be a more famous band, cos they are more "establishment"

I think it is safe to say if somebody likes sonic youth they will like polvo (and vice versa). Not that they're extremely similar, but the overall vibe and attitude towards structure is.

@idkmybffjv : polvo is so much better than SY. don't get me wrong; i know who came first, and what they did to the scene. at least they made noise rock sort of mainstream. but when it comes to making strong songs, polvo is way better. despite something like 25 years of playing together, sonic youth still sounds like a bunch of brats making noise, and that's all good. personally, i think polvos melodies are going to stand the test of time better. and today's active lifestyles is so underrated.

I was just listening to Gemini Cusp on vinyl, the last song on Today's Active Lifestyles and popped on here hoping to see something... Excellent interpretation of an insanely good, sometimes misunderstood, band. I'm from Chapel Hill and saw them many a time and each time offered their own new live interpretation. Perhaps the most inventive band from Chapel Hill, surely in that time frame, maybe ever. If going for just one Polvo, Active Lifestyles is a must have album, IMO.

band. Got the record (Cor Crane Secret) from a small record shop in Leicester in 1992/1993 after hearing it on John Peel. Today's Active Lifestyles is the best though

@gaspanda was that shop called Rock - A - Boom? I loved that store...even after they moved to bigger premises their staff and operation were as credible and authentic as always...

Leicester. It's a great store and that sort of place is becoming increasingly unique - i think kids are missing out on the tactile element of record shopping.

I also used to buy records from Backtrax which was a second hand place in the Silver

Arcade, and at that time Ainsleys used to have quite a good selection too....

I'd argue that Polvo is one of the best bands from the 1990's.
