He is very much alive, probably the worst crash ive seen, he runs a tuning and race prep company in Japan called Tezzo which is still cool
the visor when he was laid down sagged onto his face, 800degree hot burning plastic onto bare skin just isnt cool, the guy in the black racesuit is another driver who stopped to help!!
he had bad burns to his nasal area and the smoke inhalation caused him to lose some movement in his right arm fingers and shoulder!
Good god... i've watched this clip many times. And i still get horrified when i see the smoke coming out of his helmet. The smoke from the melted visor that's stuck to his face and eyes... That scene can haunt you forever...
I thought he died in the crash! Put the car out first (even though all the fuel had probably burned already). They probably should have left the guy in it, unless they thought the car would re-ignite.
But I do not think anyone expected that driver to move under his own power, much less stand up and try to walk. They may have only had 1 paramedic crew.
Does anyone know what type of racing suit he was wearing? I am planning to buy a new one, and that looks incredibly effective.
The following authors, human rights and internet activists have been murdered by the German BND, the renamed GESTAPO:
Jürgen Möllemann, Uwe Barschel, Martina Pflock, Heiner Gehring, Karl Koch, Tron, Kirsten Heisig, Fritz Bauer (prosecutor of the Frankfurt Auschwitz processes) Bernd Seiffert and my brother Markus Bott.
If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me.

Fkn selfish japs!! This video make me really soo mad!! The driver is just so lucky to be a life and they don't do anything to help him! Just turn to that broken car... where is humanity?! Is everybody in Japan nuts?!
Also, this video is cut a little short. 3 or 4 seconds after this video ends, a minivan pulls up and the driver is placed inside it. Like I said, the medical personnel were ill equipped or the ambulance was loading someone else.
It was bad deal all around.
Ota was awarded $800,000 in the end. A far cry from the $2,500,000 he started out asking for, but he said that he was happy with it.
He still works in motorsports as a tuner-shop owner dealing as a Ferrari specialty shop.
I should also mention that the EMS and Fire Rescue personnel have 30 seconds to reach and pull drivers from burning cars. That means both fire fighters and EMS have to work in cadence to accomplish this. None of the workers at this race had had any extensive training which has now changed.
Fuji Raceway is as safe as any of them. Take that for what its worth. If your a racer, you've picked a dangerous career. You can die.
Fire is your worst enemy. Racers are required to get out of cars in 10 sec.
Everyone should just shut-up about how bad the Paramedics were. The men in the orange jump suits are not Paramedics and probably not even EMT's. From what I've read about this shunt, they were safety workers with maybe some first aid training. This is what part of the law suit was about that brought on by Tetsuya Ota, the driver of the Ferrari 355 Challenge car. The law suit stated that the track workers were not trained well enough and that medical personnel were not equipped well enough.
Wow...even for 1998, that is piss poor safety crew work. And that was at a GP weekend? God help anybody in an F-1 car with workers like that to protect them.
@Ja14111948 Considering I've personally suffered 3rd degree burns, I can tell you, yes, being on fire FUCKING HURTS! Afterwards hurts even more because of the medical process they use to keep skin grafts over the burn site clean to prevent infection. Ever thought ripping a bandaid off your skin hurts? Same principle, except it feels like they're actually pulling your skin off, because the nerve endings in that area are sensitive as fuck. So yes, Ota suffered alot of pain because of that crash
omg he survived i have watched the vid of the actual crash and i thought he was dead cause of the explosion, the force of the crash and cause he was in the burning car for so long, i am glad he survived
The name of the driver is Tetsuya Ota. As you can see, his visor melt on his face, which must have been extremely painful. The medical response was extremely bad that day.
In 8 hours of Suzuka in bikes if you crash you have to risk your self and arrive to boxes yes or yes. But this is not human poor driver is in a big shock, they let him, after they let him go up.... its crazy!
@Umbrella7977 I'm pretty sure they were just trying to put out the fire from the other car so everyone didn't die because of an explosion. It's all about priority.
@skaught911 well they if ya think bout it anotherway too, they had a guy who was sitting in a car that went off like bomb... knocked out cold... and cant even sit up and they're puttin out a camp fire on the side... mean yes get the fire out from the cars of course but atleast 2 or 3 people can help the damn drive who can barely sit up.
@Umbrella7977 How many medic's do you know that carry fire extinguisher's? they are bloody track marshals for fuck sake. why the hell don't people watch the bloody video's before making themselves look stupid by slagging off someone who's job is to put out small fires but he tries to help as much as possible. I bet this poor guy helping doesn't get paid for doing this yet he has to deal with something so horrific. Praise the guy insted of slagging him off!!!!!!!!
@Umbrella7977 That wasn't a medic. Also, since he isn't a medic, they told him to lay down and to NOT move which is the correct thing to do. A person with a possible broken neck or other spinal injuries should not be moved at all. The drive is in obvious pain and cannot think clearly. They should have held him down until the real medics could arrive. You people should think before commenting like ignorant fools.
@calvin950 i think what he ment was ,the fella who was with the driver should have stayed with the driver and not stroll away with a fire extinguisher like an asshole
@calvin950 Perhaps it would have been better to keep him on his side though, the visor actually melted into his eyes and nose as he layed there, which is why he got up suddenly.
@calvin950 Actually your wrong. They did the correct thing here which was to get him out of the road. Neck injures or not. You don't want to survive a crash like this then have another car run over you.
@Umbrella7977 problem is ,they're track amrshalls, they don't know anything aobut medical stuff, and have to wait for the medics themselves to show up before being able to operate n him or anything. but yeah, they really suck.
@Umbrella7977 he wasn't a medic he was a marshal and after seeing the crash and the blaze the driver was very lucky to be alive! btw a lot of marshals are unpaid volunteers some may have some medical training or fire fighting training but most are there for the love of the sport and are just trying to help

Oh my god i would hate to have those officials if i wrecked. What kind of care is that? Oh hes all good let him walk it off, FUCK NO. Support the neck dont move breathe deep. I know what its like to be dased and when you are you have no idea if your broke or not thats why you need to stay put untill you get through that X-RAY.
The treatment by the "safety" team is incredibly incompetent and unprofessional - takes off the neck support? Then walks away? If Oto had a upper spinal fracture, that stunt could have killed him outright. When he stands it is obvious he has a broken leg or ankle, guessing femur the way he drops when putting weight on it. Bad enough not black-flagging the race before, but the Emergency team actions, he easily could have survived, only to be killed by incompetence. His recovery is amazing.
The mistake was not shutting down in those conditions, I don't see driver error. If you've ever been on a track in thick fog, it's not pretty. I had my first experience just during a practice, coming off the straight into a 90-100 mph turn you could not even see. I cannot imagine trying to race in those conditions, you would be highly unlikely to see the caution flags. Plus it appears the guys were a little slow on the flag.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How the hell is this video not blocked for uner 18's?! It's shocking! I mean his helmet is smoking for christ sake! Anyway, that marshal needs to be shot, clearly the marshalling standards in Japan are nowhere near as good as in the UK, even if we do have to buy our own fireproof equipment...
Anyway, what the marshal should have done when realising he is alive is call for medical help and stay with him!!! And don't let him get up, he could have a serious back injury!
what do you think he feels because the äm... thing of his helmet meltet into his face. can he still see and things like that? man this guy is really...... damn man! what a poor guy!
@sasan8800 Its not that they were worrying about the car, the golden rule in first aid is protect yourself, then others who arnt injured then the injured, if he stopped to help that guy up and the car burst into flames they would now have 2 + casualties instead of 1. Or take 5-10 seconds to make sure all flames are out on the car then attend to the casulty.
It does not make sense the need of 20 people to turn off one fire and live the man on the floor whit the helmet melting on his face, notwithstanding, they got him whit no proper treatment on the place, he could die if his neck was broken!...this video really shocks me!
I've heard that stupidity does not hurt, maybe you could give me some first-hand information.Would be nice thanks.Miss I am quite of your opinion! The other has had the help really needed!
the safety guards failed ! I cant belive how a human can watch a man burning in a car without doing anything. Even if I was the porsche driver, who passed the ferrari, I would stop my car to help the other driver!
unbeliveable ! hope such things don`t happen again!
This is NOT an example of how a safety crew should act. I'm sorry, but their was ONE person at the Ferrari, and 10ish at the Porsche? And why was he helping the guy UP?
the guy survived but with 3rd degree burns to his face cause the helmet melted and got brain neural damage because of the heat. He won a suit in court against the race organizers.
i dont get it...why was that man ever left alone????? the safety was soooo ignored as for him as well!!! wtf!! he should havce had a dozen people around him helping !!!!!!
The driver was Tetsuya Ota He was trapped in his car for over 90 seconds at nearly 800 degree F heat. He had major nerve damage in his right shoulder/arm and subsequently stopped racing. Check the Wikipedia article on him for more info.
go to google and type in keeponracing. Tetsuya's website should come up. It appears that he now has all of his motor functions back in his body and he is more accomplished now than ever. What an amazing recovery.

His recovery is amazing.

i don't think ferrari is dangers it's the driver make mstake and mis juge the road and crash.
johntaheri 2 years ago 4
The mistake was not shutting down in those conditions, I don't see driver error. If you've ever been on a track in thick fog, it's not pretty. I had my first experience just during a practice, coming off the straight into a 90-100 mph turn you could not even see. I cannot imagine trying to race in those conditions, you would be highly unlikely to see the caution flags. Plus it appears the guys were a little slow on the flag.

And don't let him get up, he could have a serious back injury!
adam280491 2 years ago
what do you think he feels because the äm... thing of his helmet meltet into his face. can he still see and things like that? man this guy is really...... damn man! what a poor guy!
thepainbob666 2 years ago 2
this video serious makes me so mad! help the fuckin guy for god sake!!
to fuckin busy worrying about the damn car
sasan8800 2 years ago 41
@sasan8800 Its not that they were worrying about the car, the golden rule in first aid is protect yourself, then others who arnt injured then the injured, if he stopped to help that guy up and the car burst into flames they would now have 2 + casualties instead of 1. Or take 5-10 seconds to make sure all flames are out on the car then attend to the casulty.

@AndyWillow1989
It does not make sense the need of 20 people to turn off one fire and live the man on the floor whit the helmet melting on his face, notwithstanding, they got him whit no proper treatment on the place, he could die if his neck was broken!...this video really shocks me!

At 0:53 it's like the safety guy is trying to stop the driver or he is helping him because he's dizzy?

really sad !!!
the safety guards failed ! I cant belive how a human can watch a man burning in a car without doing anything. Even if I was the porsche driver, who passed the ferrari, I would stop my car to help the other driver!
unbeliveable ! hope such things don`t happen again!
A SAD DAY FOR MOTOR RACING !
vasco030 2 years ago 3
This is NOT an example of how a safety crew should act. I'm sorry, but their was ONE person at the Ferrari, and 10ish at the Porsche? And why was he helping the guy UP?
Brantoc 2 years ago
where the paramedic..
ritz60 2 years ago
the guy survived but with 3rd degree burns to his face cause the helmet melted and got brain neural damage because of the heat. He won a suit in court against the race organizers.

did this guy go blind?
Gjon777 2 years ago
The driver was Tetsuya Ota He was trapped in his car for over 90 seconds at nearly 800 degree F heat. He had major nerve damage in his right shoulder/arm and subsequently stopped racing. Check the Wikipedia article on him for more info.
thepengestration 2 years ago 2
go to google and type in keeponracing. Tetsuya's website should come up. It appears that he now has all of his motor functions back in his body and he is more accomplished now than ever. What an amazing recovery.
