You probably wrote for Mitch Miller. When's the last time you fed a hungry man? or fought the corporate greed? You made a tourism jingle out of this sacred song of the disenfranchised.
A real good source on Woody's life and work is "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein. On page 472 there is a handwritten version from 1940. It is signed Mary G. with a sidenote that it is the original version. In it the line "if this land is made for you and me' was written over 'God blessed America for Me".
The stop sign verse is there but it started "a big high wall there, it tried to stop me'; so too is the relief office. A little different but present. Every performer leavea a mark.
This obviously is not Guthries singing, but they explained pretty plainly what this was. The lyrics Woody Guthrie wrote were indeed intended to point out how the land was being taken over & hoarded from the people for whom it was intended. No big secret, well known facts. OUR history and simple songs indeed.
seandouglas1, my father, my best friend's father, and all of the other real people that I know say that this version is close enough... the real people that I know fought in WWI and WWII, survived the depression, and gave us this piece of stolen property so that we could show the world what a free people can do. I do not know the source of your anger... but I would ask that you give us a moment to perfect a 'kinder and gentler' world... you and your progeny will benefit too... peace!
THATS NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSION THEY ARE REWRITING SHIT AGAIN LIKE ARE HISTORY SIMPLE SONGS JUST THINK WHAT THEY DO ON THE REAL ISSUES THIS GUYS A PLANT UR NO AMERICAN TRADER
@bennors Actually, that was the exact attitude Woody was feeling when he wrote that song. This isn't "unknown" stuff or sinister rewriting of history. This is how it was. Like him or lump him, Woody Guthrie did indeed have that exact attitude.
@BabylonShitstem This land is OUR land and we're going to have to take it back. That is, if by "OUR land" you mean the land of the international proletariat and the peasant. If that's the case, yes, "we" must take "our" land back from the capitalists and fascists.

For the original words see Woody's handwriten notes on page 472 of "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein. I'm way too young for Mitch Miller.

@seandouglas1 Actually I'm pretty sure it is the original version. Especially the last two verses about Stop sign and people in the relief office.
BobJohnson1945 1 year ago 4
@seandouglas1 Maybe you should read up on Woody Guthrie. Guthrie wrote those verses and felt them completely.
Are you also aware the Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Socialist?

@seandouglas1
This ARE original verses, they just didn't sing teach them to us in school- Guthrie was a radical.
