@Azarathus Try Kurau - Phantom Memory. It's got very very deep and complex character based storyline and it's just incredible. Never I have felt in same way for any other anime characters. The beginning might feel at first very stereotypical but just wait until a few first episodes goes away until the story and specially the growth of the characters starts blooming.

People who say that this is the best anime ever have surely not seen Tokyo Godfathers * and no it's not a gangster anime :P * , Grave of the fireflies, Spirited Away and so on .... Princess Mononoke is a good anime .... but imho surely not even close to being the best.

In my humble opinion Miyazaki has to * and i'm sure that he'd feel honored if he ever did * share first place at least with another great artist named Satoshi Kon * R.I.P. *

Even if I had to pick my favorite from Miyazaki , I wouldn't go for princess mononoke but for Spirited Away .... but hey that's just me :)

@azaas I would agree that the animation is better in Spirited Away (the animation in Mononoke is kind of stiff compared to other Miyazaki films but, the use of color is incredibly beautiful, some of the best of any of his films) but, I think Mononoke has a more compelling story with more interesting characters (they're tied for favorite though).

@shadowspsp At face level, sure. But once you account for all that's going on, it makes Avatar look like a piece of cardboard in comparison. In Avatar you have the most cookie cutter characters, especially the general or whomever. Meanwhile in Mononoke you don't even have a clear sense of who is bad or good, because they are neither. Almost everyone's has the right intentions, but most of them are just misdirected in trying to achieve it, making it one of the most truly human films ever.

I like the subtlety of this trailer.. no overly dramatic voice-over narration spouting off ambiguous cliches or spastic cuts of all the action scenes smashed into a meaningless montage of explosions. It's succinct and tasteful; just how it should be. Are most Japanese film trailers in this same vein? American trailer-makers can learn a thing or two.

I don't see why people always say that japanese voice actors show more emotion. Fuck's sake, as far as I can tell it's simply their language and voices, Like how Italian is great for singing because it's so legato. Japanese has harsh sounds, and it seems that the vocal chords of the japanese are easily destroyed, because whenever they're showing 'emotion' it sounds like they're the vocalist for a deathmetal band.

Regarding the Miramax dub,

I did not find it all that horrible. Having Keith David as Okkoto with his distinctive bass voice was genius. My only real problems were Billy Bob Thornton, for obvious reasons, and Jada Pinkett Smith's voice because her accent was quite an anachronism for me.

Miyazaki himself says there are often benefits to each version.

Princess Mononoke is one of the best fantasy stories ever. The pleas against the human desecration of nature are followed by warnings of her resilience and wrath, and Mononoke's presence as a bridge between these two terrible themes all blend poetically. I'll always love this film, and it often springs to mind when I see the real evidence of human folly in the natural world.

What do you think of Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2? those are badass movies mainly part 2 which has improved animation and surpasses the original as it's from the creator of Wicked City and Ninja Scroll Yoshiakta Kawajari. What do you think of him? do you think he's an anime auterur like Miyazaki, Otomo, Oshii, Ozamu or any of the greats? he does terrific animation and character designs in his movies including good storytelling

Aye, English dubbed versions tends to be Golden especially on epic OVA's. Namely, Spirited Away seems to be better in English while Mononoke Hime in Japanese. Thats just my opinion though.
