The ignorant, race-hustling morons who try to diminish Mikey Mantle are the same types who trash Babe Ruth. ... BTW, the SF-Oak bay area was never used as an excuse for HR hitters Willie McCovey, Reggie Jackson, and even Barry Bonds -- before he started taking roids.
Also, for the guy who thought Mantle played in a bandbox, Yankee Stadium was 461 feet to center field and 457 to left center. (Ever hear the term "Death Valley?)Straightaway left was 402. Right field was 407 over the old auxiliary scoreboard, 367 to straightaway right. The lines were short, but if you had any idea of how Mantle played, his power was to center and the alleys. Mays was great, obviously. Both at thier best? Mantle was better. No question.
Look at the numbers, boys. Mays had 10,881 at bats in his career. Mickey just 8,102. Yes, Mays has more homers and rbi's, but that is on the basis on longevity. Mickey homered every 15.1 at bats. Mays every 16.5. Mickey drove in a run every 5.3 at bats; Mays every 5.7 at bats. Mantle actually had MORE walks than Mays and his on base percentage of .421 dwarfs Mays .384. Mantle only had 8 seasons of 500 or more at bats with a high of 549. Mays had 13 years with more AB's than that.
Mantle was the greatest ball player that ever lived. And if he would have had 2 good legs he would have been even better, Triple Crown Winners are very far and few between. Had 16 bone fractures in 18 yrs. not to mention torn cartlige and pulled muscles. How many players could hit a 500 foot home run from either side.....none.
Spoken like a true race-hustlng moron. ... Yankee Stadium was hardly a "bandbox" ... It was short in the corners -- just like the Polo Grounds -- where Mays played the first part of his career. Some of the other old parks in the National League were small, which no huge center (Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium) or left-center (Yankee Stadium). There's no way to tell how many homers Mantle lost in left-center field in the bronx. Mantle was a great player. Period. And, so was Willie Mays!
@epm5433 Mantle played in New York summers where the ball flys and the humidity is higher. Anyone with an ounce of since would know San Francisco is humid. Your comment spoken by a true idiot.
Mantle hit monstrous home runs but he also played in a band box and still didn't hit as many jacks as Mays. The American League was less integrated so he more than likely also faced weaker pitches on average. Not hardly the greatest. I'd pick Pete Rose over Mickey.
@ExacavatoroftheWest ur in crack pete roseover mick dont even talk u dont know baseball if u pick rose over mantle just shut up fast player to run the bases 10 seconds from home to home yeah... and bandbox what the hell r ur talking about i think every other stadium has had a ball hit OUT of it it Yankee stadium both of them has never had one leave mantle came the closest with the OLD stadium where the fances where deep extremely deep compared to now know ur facts dumbass
Mantle's best years were better than Mays', and the ferocity was just mesmerizing if you were a kid growing up during that era!

@tomitstube Batting helmets were not used in the 50's, they were introduced sometime during the 60's.
