@deja2052 I thought this was a song of Christianity, since I had learned this song in my kindergardenhood. When I watched the collapse of Berlin Wall on TV twenty years ago, I suddenly got an inspiration on the background meaning.

Just now God of word play gave me an inspiration: Sick river, in my berry is an internal organ. Metaboric river, rord, I have to check into a hospital.

After highschool, Marian applied to an all-white music school, the Philadelphia Music Academy (now University of the Arts), but was turned away because she was black. The woman working the admissions counter replied, "We don't take colored" when she tried to apply. Marian's principal of her high school offered to help her and enabled her to meet a very respected talented music teacher- Giuseppe Boghetti. Marian auditioned for him singing 'Deep River', he was immediatley brought to tears.
