Sooooo....To play the earlier versions, you needed some erasers, clothespin and some dice...Everyone looked manly and had hair. Cut to 4e and you need a computer and it makes you go bald, not one of those mooks has enough testosterone to grow a mustache. Figures this advertisement would have some swishy guy from France hosting it.
I've never really played D&D,except for the video games. But I can see how 4th edition would be better for pure roleplay reasons, without having disputes over complicated rules getting in the way of the fantasy element of playing.
The good editions are the even-numbered editions. 2e is superior, but 4E is a hell of a challenger, and it's getting better every year. MIGHT one day surpass it.
@ZachariasClub Actually, there's some question as to whether they showed 1e or 2e. They showed 1989, which was the year 2e came out, but as it was also 1e's final year it was the year 1e was at last complete. They didn't explicitly say what edition it was, so you gotta wonder which it was, really. The two would look similar enough to an observer unless specific mechanics were discussed (like they brought up intervals, in which case it's 1e, or proficiencies, in which case it's 2e).
4th edition is a fine edition, personally, it's funner and simpler than 3.5e. WoTC refreshes the game everyone and awhile to improve on the game. Of course there's a lot of 3.5 material, it was out for a while. Quit bitching, and buy it. It's not some kind of conspiracy. Compare it to video games, they can't release more and more expansions forever, eventually they got to update it.
I've been playing fourth ed for a while, and I'm not seeing any of the 'evoloution and refinement' in 4th ed. It's... like playing pencil and paper WoW. It's catered to gamer minmaxers, with little, if any incentive for new players to actually roleplay.
Also, there is just as math involved in 4th ed as in 2nd ed.
I'll stick with AD&D 2nd ed. I think D&D lost it's way when it lost TSR.
yeh, i've had that problem with 3.5, but i dont know y they act like its such a big deal. you get used to the rules eventually and they really dont seem that complex.
@Directorboy91 Absolutly, I like to play 3.5 and never played 4th cause of the computer involvement. But if anybody else do and like its cool.... so lie Directorboy say stop bitching instead play...
There seems to be a lot of bad blood going around about this edition of the game, but hey it's not like WotC is coming to your house and taking all your old books from you. If you like 3e or 2e or any combination of rules more power to you, just remember what playing this game is really all about, getting together with a bunch of your friends and having a kick ass time.
It is the feeling, the end that bothers. The company has started the first steps to abandone 3.5, thus in future making it more hard to play if your books get *****^**.
From the sound of it, some hardcore fans are really blowing up about all the changes. I'll admit, I haven't played it since AD&D 2nd Edition, but these changes can't be all bad.
I'm not a fan of WotC myself, I liked it when TSR owned the franchise, but look on the upside. Had they not bought it, it would have slipped into oblivion as TSR went belly-up.
Better to have something than nothing. The important thing is to cherish those old-school memories you have and still be open to new things.
D&D is an old school game no matter what the the most people say but if you want to play D&D do it by following the core books of the older versions not the 4rth edition the rules ARE NOT INVOLVED ,they just made my passion (D&D) a wow-like crap shit game that ruins the main ideal of the pure classic kicking ass old school D&D that i knew once
Well, some people say that 4th edition is much like a video game, and that there is no more roleplaying and stuff... well, i don't think so. You see... roleplaying is about imagination, not about rules. It doesn't really matters what set of rules you're using, you can always make it an interesting game with a little imagination. Rules are for battling monsters, and the 4th edition rules allows you to make real good battles, really! So, D&D 4th edition is a very good set of rules indeed
yeah , i am thinking of playing DND in the future and i know that 4'th edition will be the only rulebook out soon, how will i roleplay ?? so i can have a good time , i know what roleplaying means i mean with dungeons and dragons , please reply
4th edition is designed purely for adaptation to video games. If you look carefully at the PHB, you'll see that every spell, ability and power with a remotely difficult adaption to program code is gone. Just look for yourself. They couldn't adapt the game as it was easily to a video game, so they changed damn near everything about it. I will never play 4th edition or for that matter, another WotC product. Now if i can just fit the 4e phb into my blendtec blender...
I've personally just gotten into playing with 3.5. As of a few days ago, I even managed to get Some friends and family members interested...Unfortunatly, we're probably gonna have to get V.4...Somebody in the group is interested in creating a Swordmage, a 4.0 character class...
Thanks for your help. Currently, the furthest any of our group has gotten into 4e would be said player having bought a copy of the "Races and Classes" preview...
In all honesty I am not going to use 4th, they've changed too many fundamental things about D&D that I like. Overall 4th is a good game and it's clear that WotC worked hard it, but I wouldn't call it a D&D (by my standards).
You are new to D&D so really it's up to what you find the most interesting at fun, but if i were you I would stick with 3.5 for the mean time because there is so much already out in way of content and books for it. 4th is new and fun but currently lacks the options of 3.5
Just for clarification, Swordmage -is- a class in 4E. It's being included in the Forgotten Realms Player's Guide, along with information on Genasi and expanded info for Drow (such as racial feats, etc.).
Horrible... 4th edition is a scam. Only true nerds and enemies of roleplaying will go for this shit. I got all i needed by mixing 2.5 ed with some 3rd ed rules. All you need is imagination and good crew of friends. WotC don't care about worlds of d&d - their interest is earning money the best way they can, it's their right. All you have is choice, and mine is: "I ain't going for this crap."
lol I'm gonna play D&D with 3.5 players handbook and 4th edition monster manual and maybe if I have the patience to wait I'll get 4 e. DM guide. If I can't wait then I am just gonna get 3.5
I have lived it, I play DnD all the time. My group uses the grapple system without any problems. I dunno, I suppose it's a little complicated and I guess simplifying things can't be bad. I just hope you they don't screw up the game.
Here a quick qustion for all dnd player how many people like druids. I want to know couse out of all my friend that play dnd i seem to be the only one to like this class. so let me know how like or dose like druids and why
well it dosen't realy matter wat other people like its your choice and if u like druid then play. i personaly am a melee person so i like barbarian i just like to get neck deep in combat but that is just me
what the hell?mrglies the GM is DM dungeons master not game master.and i heard rumors that the 4th edition will change the whole game the basic lvl was and still is 20 but it will change to 30!!! all the books and supplements will change to: forgotten realms ,eberron, grayhawk, dragonlance everything gone after 30 years of tradition will lose its epic style WTF!!!!
lol, it's funny cause it's true, goin through 10 minutes of play flippin through the player's handbook to see how many undead I turn, I end up just sayin "ah, screw it, I shoot the skeleton with my bow (because I'm a ranger/cleric, I can shoot rotting bones with my arrows, THAT powerful)
Bahh still like 2nd edition better then 3rd.. Our GM mixes the rules to both make them more realistic, and to optimize possibilities. And by now we almost know all the rules ourselves anyway so when we play, we save a lot of time by organizing the rounds and rolls ourselves and our GM just have to take care of the NPC's. We play in 10 sec rounds because the original 1 minute rounds were rediculous like, what would the warrior being that 1 mintue between his swings? Yet we use Thac0 decreasing.
Rules are nothing. They way they play RPG we played at the age of 12. Hack n Slay bullsh**. Today our best sessions are the ones without even one fight. Become NERDs. Fuck Wizards, Fuck Hack N slay!
That told me NOTHING! I'm interested somewhat in what 4ed will be like but i'm perfectly happy with 3.5 for the time being. that's gonna be a hell of a lot of money to shell out...
ya know, i started playing when Edition 3 came out, and i really didnt like v.2's rule set. The only good thing about v 4 i think is that now some of the pain in the ass work can be done on a computer, although its kinda pointless seeing as there are a shit load of character, dungeon and campaign generators online that you can get for free. I'm gonna mix a bit of 3 and 4, but i wont invest too much into it.
the thing you people are forgetting about the game is this. "First and foremost, this is a GAME." straight from the dm guide suckas. it goes on to say that the DM and the DM ONLY has final say in what rules are used and not used. so, you don't want to play 4th? then don't. quit being little nerdy bitches. this is why dnd-ers have a bad name. assholes.
thank you! Im a DM and i think some of the rules (doesnt matter what edition) are bullshit. DMs are the ones who determine everything. Hell, i overlook some of the gay rules to save time and make the experience more fun. I'm not gonna get too into 4th ed. since i think it's come out way too soon after 3rd. ill wait on 4th for a while.
and i don't know about you guys, but i've been dm-ing for years, and after watching the dm computer tools in the 4part trailers, i'm really looking forward to the ease with which i'm going to be able to make a dungeon. so what if if they come up with new rules.
so. all you guys flaming dnd 4th ed. i agree with the whole, "they're just trying to make money" position. but isn't that the whole point of the company in the first place? who would work for WotC if they didn't make money? dur. and if you don't want to buy them... download one of the plethora of pdf torrents that are offered on any number of torrent tracking sites.
The video made me lol. I'm curious to try 4th edition out. If it makes encounters go quicker and smoother than 3.5, I'll go with it. If I don't like it, then I'm sticking to my lovely 3.5v.
I mean they could have left it at 3.0 playtested for five years and said "We are updating to Fourth Edition.". But, instead They were like. "Here is a ton of 3.0 Edition books. Oh, Sorry we didn't get it right, here are the same books revised to 3.5 edition AND even MORE 3.5 Edition books YAY! Oh, you know what, 3.5 wasn't right either. Its Evolutions. Take Fourth Edition and some more books while we rake in your money." Please.
just goes to show that WotC is staying jsut as sexist as every other edition. not a single female player over the years presetned. so the game will remain the same, yet females are unwelcome.
bunch of bull****.
but sicne the narrator was obviously gay i can understand why that group had no females in it.
Oh, please. There were no black people, asians, Native Americans, handicapped people, midgets, senior citizens, paraplegics, amputees, transsexuals, Hell's Angels, astronauts or cowboys in the video either. That doesn't mean they're are "unwelcome," it means there weren't any at the office who wanted to spend an afternoon making a video.
There's no sexism at work here, just the convenience of grabbing whoever was available. It's not a conspiracy. Really.
Well, I wouldn't say they randomly picked four people. To the best of my knowledge, the majority of DnD players ARE men, so WotC is just playing to what they perceive to be their target audience. Although they did miss the mark ... for the steadily growing number of female players out there, this is a rather alienating video.
Dude. If they'd put a woman in there, a whole nother group would've bitched about that. I seems to me that it's four guys from 1978 who've gone on to play over the years and editions. In 1978 there were only two women playing D&D. And one was your mom. I know. I was there...SON!
well the thing is that showing these four same people still doesn't serve D&D well. were these people unable to make any other friends BECAUSE they played D&D?
it shows the game in a very poor light. agreeing with many people over the years that the stereotypical D&D player is a socially inept person that cannot find other friends.
Vaguely humorous, if inaccurate. However... Pain. There is pain. How is this even a trailer, I ask? It doesn't even give any information giving the new edition! Oh, they're having fun! Well, guess what, WotC? That tells me NOTHING! I had fun with 3.X! I! Want! DETAILS! NERRRRD RAAAAGE!
Sooooo....To play the earlier versions, you needed some erasers, clothespin and some dice...Everyone looked manly and had hair. and i don't know about you guys, but i've been dm-ing for years, and after watching the dm computer tools in the 4part trailers, i'm really looking forward to the ease with which i'm going to be able to make a dungeon. so what if if they come up with new rules.
casebolt024 4 years ago
so. all you guys flaming dnd 4th ed. i agree with the whole, "they're just trying to make money" position. but isn't that the whole point of the company in the first place? who would work for WotC if they didn't make money? dur. and if you don't want to buy them... download one of the plethora of pdf torrents that are offered on any number of torrent tracking sites.

The video made me lol. I'm curious to try 4th edition out. If it makes encounters go quicker and smoother than 3.5, I'll go with it. If I don't like it, then I'm sticking to my lovely 3.5v.

i found the video funny
and fredzxcv you know...we have 2 female players in our party and their both hoot
the fact that u don't make friends or girlfriends doesn't mean that it's becauze you play dnd
try to be a little more social and smile more instead of accusing such a great game
{yea and 2/3 of male players have girlfriends}

Cute but a waste of time... Doesn't show anything about 4th edition.. Need better content

. . . Lame.

I don't get it. If the game will remain the same, why even make new books. Incentive to buy = 0. And it wasn't even funny.
lmb030 4 years ago
What the hell is with the French guy? The video could've been somewhat funny if only he wasn't so fucking irritating, unfunny and spectacularly gay.
xitami 4 years ago
They put him in there just to fuck with you! AND IT WORKED! You can't stop thinking about him, can you? You loathe him and yet...you MUST HAVE HIM!!!

No, seriously, he's just super lame.

So true Xitami, he really is irritating as hell.

"WotC, Wants only the Cash" seriously! Three new Editions in eight years? WHY???
lordcack2005 4 years ago
You answered your own question.

just goes to show that WotC is staying jsut as sexist as every other edition. not a single female player over the years presetned. so the game will remain the same, yet females are unwelcome.
bunch of bull****.
but sicne the narrator was obviously gay i can understand why that group had no females in it.
fredzxcv 4 years ago
Really.
As ever, ANYONE is welcome to play D&D.
mikehughey 4 years ago
Well, I wouldn't say they randomly picked four people. To the best of my knowledge, the majority of DnD players ARE men, so WotC is just playing to what they perceive to be their target audience. Although they did miss the mark ... for the steadily growing number of female players out there, this is a rather alienating video.
lmb030 4 years ago
For one thing, it was the same group of players in different hairstyles/costumes.
Second, at least one of the people in the video was bill slavicsek and I'd bet the rest were also played by D&D designers.
That being said, this video did blow.
shamsael 4 years ago
Dude. If they'd put a woman in there, a whole nother group would've bitched about that. I seems to me that it's four guys from 1978 who've gone on to play over the years and editions. In 1978 there were only two women playing D&D. And one was your mom. I know. I was there...SON!
DickFields 4 years ago
well the thing is that showing these four same people still doesn't serve D&D well. were these people unable to make any other friends BECAUSE they played D&D?
it shows the game in a very poor light. agreeing with many people over the years that the stereotypical D&D player is a socially inept person that cannot find other friends.
fredzxcv 4 years ago
Vaguely humorous, if inaccurate. However... Pain. There is pain. How is this even a trailer, I ask? It doesn't even give any information giving the new edition! Oh, they're having fun! Well, guess what, WotC? That tells me NOTHING! I had fun with 3.X! I! Want! DETAILS! NERRRRD RAAAAGE!

I find it highly unlikely that ze game vill remain ze same.
