you could read "team" comics for a while ie; the x-men or avengers. they have alot of characters and you can see who you might like or relate with. often it comes down to the writers though, a good writer can make a crap character shine and a crap writer can ruin an awesome character.

You might want to check out Marvel's site and read all the comics you want online for a really reasonable price, compared to just going right out and buying books you may or may not like at all.
