  • Its funny how Doc can play this good Blind and we have a full line of people at the welfare dept. who can't seem to get off their lazy asses. So pathetic !!

  • @mandyraeoflight727 How dare you twist Doc Watson's greatness into an attack on the poor.

  • Ooeeeeeehh!!!!!! That ending turnaround gave me the best shiver in my life xD love it

  • ผม ชอบเวอร์

  • shreddin'! Malmsteen ain't got nothin' on Doc! :)

  • Is he playing a seven string?

  • @mynameisjonas45 no the lines through the neck create an optical illusion. There are only six tuning pegs as well.

  • This is just... excellent!

  • This song sends shivers.....

  • He can't. But Doc Watson could be President.

  • dam i didnt know g.bush could play like that dam!

  • So glad for this video i have found out how to pick this tune very like the Merle Travis sound

  • Its worth pointing out that this song is actually the Delmore Brothers song called 'I've got the big river blues' which they recorded in 1933!!!!!!!!

  • @ratherknotty if you listen to the trouble in mind comp, doc gives credit to alton and rabon delmore for writing the tune.

  • nice camera angles, capture fingering & plucking

  • sounded good then and sounds good now.

  • nice hehe^^

  • When he left the qhite house he started to sing!!!

  • Doc Watson is a piece of American history! His music has inspired generations! Musicians and good honest people like him are getting harder to find! God bless Doc Watson! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • Those are some mighty thick strings on his guitar. Amost looks like a guitar bass!

  • man his voice is so soothing...

  • saw this guy live in 2005. he shreds!

  • Whats with these 11 people having no taste in music??

  • Is it just me or do every one of his strings look like a low E string?

  • @TheGrantCave He has inlays that run lengthwise with the fretboard. Everything is normal.

  • It makes me so mad how good he is. HE IS THE BEST GUITARIST EVER!!!

  • Чудовищный мужик....

Вам недостаточно знания своего дела и огромной души?

    Я в ОТПАДЕ!

    Arigatou!

  • kids these days don't know what real music is.

  • hey im 28 and this stuff is just the greatest music, I wish he would come to minnesota.

  • Respect to Merle Travis and the musical ground he pioneered/popularized, and to Doc for having been such a great player.

  • Simply beautiful, Doc!!!!

  • Those bends sure are tasty!

  • This sort of thing makes YouTube great.

See how in the E chord Doc covers the A and D string with one finger? His ornaments to the B7 are fascinating. I also like the way his runs are so clear and efficient. No wonder the man sounds good.

Thanks Uncle Skidder, er, and Doc.

  • This sort of thing makes YouTube great.

Thanks Uncle Skidder, er, and Doc.

  • This is so amazing. this is what true mastery sounds like

  • So Cool !

  • 10 people have no soul

  • I've seen Doc Watson twice. This is my gift to all of you for my birthday. Love, Rose

  • What brand of guitar is Doc using in this video?

  • @sw2sw2sw2

To judge from its neck and the shape of the headstock, it looks like a Santa Cruz to me. But don't ask me which model, probably a custom guitar. At least the inlays are not on any Santa Cruz I know of. In any case, Doc has long been known to play Santa Cruz guitars.

  • @JohnnyReb2009 No sir. No santa cruz there. Thats the finest of the fine, without any doubt. Thats a Henderson, brother.

  • @IBG67 It's actually a guitar built by master luthier John Arnold. John Arnold and Wayne Henderson are actually good friends and equally great luthiers.

  • @vintageguitarguru Oh, i was wondering if i was right or not afterwards, but just left it be. thanks for the info any though!

  • @sw2sw2sw2 He used to play "Gallagher" made guitars, not sure anymore though?

  • Yes, a National Treasure, and American Folk Music master. And he can play any music he would have a mind to. Thank God he chose acoustic instruments, 'cause a buddy of mine had some old kitchen recordings, and Doc was wailin' on an old Les Paul. Check out the "Docabilly" recording for some real fun. (Still on acoustic, but Duane Eddy sits in on "Thunder Road". Totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • all hail the master

  • This old bird is why I pick. Doc is up in years, so get him while you can. Thank God Doc is well recorded. When he leaves us it will break my heart for sure. One of the best old box pickers and greatest contributors to the body of work. With all the respect and admiration I can muster...here's to you, Doc.

  • President Jimmy Carter once recognized Doc Watson as a "national treasure"; at least he got that much right.

  • Magnifique ! ! ! Doc Watson, the best, 5 ***** Christian, from France ;-))

  • Amazing, he picks using only thumb and one finger.

  • @juffurey George Carlin

  • saw the doc play this very song last night in Owensboro, Ky. Life Changing!

  • yeah...such a groovy-lovely tune...i will play it...

  • yeah...such a groovy-lovely tune!!!!...i'll play it.

  • Doc does it the best pick on.

  • Doc Watson is my hero! He's an honest to goodness American treasure! He makes it look so easy and so fun, the way it should be! Excellent!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • legend

  • GEORGE BUSH HAS THE RIVER BLUES

  • It's dub-ya!

  • I just saw his show with David Holt tonight. David said Doc was playing a Gallagher at the show. Even at 87, he's still great.

  • It just don't get no better than this! Thank God for Doc.

    Terry in Alexis, NC, USA

  • Flat pick or thumb & finger, This man is in a class all by himself. God Bless Ya Doc!!!!!

  • oh W bush!!!!

  • i wish more people knew of Doc Watson these days and ages. being a carolina native. i grew up with my grandparents listening to him on a daily basis. much of his music shaped my character, i would like to believe it also made me a better person. Long Live Doc!

  • god it's him! GEORGE BUSH!

  • Doc was cool....

  • This guy's as cool as Rev Gary Davis

  • The guitar Doc is playing in this video is made by John Arnold of Newport TN. Some folks think getting a Wayne Henderson guitar is impossible lol trying to get an Arnold is 50 times harder to get. The ones who are lucky enough to own one are extremely lucky!!!!

  • It is cool to see Doc fingerpicking, as he is known as the greatest flatpicker. Thirty years ago, when we could only hear him on old vanguard records, I knew he had to be doing some of this in a fingerstyle.

  • Now, dose it get any better? The answer is, No it don't!

  • Nossa...G. BUSH!

  • To Alan62651, check out some of the Merle Travis videos on Youtube. He only used his thumb and index finger, and his other three fingers are anchored to the body of the guitar. Chet Atkins used his thumb, index and middle fingers. Doc's fingerpicking style is like Travis', while Merle Watson also used his middle finger like Chet Atkins did.

  • I've learned a simpler version of this song. Doc's version is hard as nails. But I'll get it down someday. You have to absorb these things over a period of time. I understand that now.

I've been playing for a year and 3 months and I've come a long way since then. I think in a few months I'll start posting videos.

  • Mcyntire guitar, btw, gleaned from another posting of one of his videos.

  • what idiots rated this thumbs down? LMFAO.

  • Not really a Travis pick. Doc picks with thumb and forefinger only, whereas Merle and his disciples use 1st and 2nd fingers. Interestingly, Doc defines the sound for a lot of tunes that end up in a "Travis picking" style by others.

  • no hes using second finger too surely? i think he is

  • It's hard to tell in the video, but I thought I remembered him saying that he was a 1-finger picker, and Merle was the Merle Travis disciple. It's been a long time, so I may be mistaken.

  • god, now this is guitar

  • Most likely his Gallagher guitar, "Hoss".

  • @420Cannabis Its a westernguitar .

  • He looks just like George W Bush

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is?

  • @420Cannabis It is John Arnold guitar, don't even try to look for his website. He doesn't have one. Mr. Arnold's build list is very exclusive and his guitars are some of the best sounding guitars in the world. Maybe if you contact him, you might be able to do what most people who contact him never can, get a guitar.

  • @420Cannabis Gallagher

  • um no.lol

  • 2:03.... How....

  • Holy shit..Is that George Bush?

  • @TwilightsLastGleam HELL NO,. haha

  • @TwilightsLastGleam Nope. Too good looking and way too talented.

  • @TwilightsLastGleam No this guy is much more talented and hes blind.

  • @TwilightsLastGleam Get da fuck outta here!

  • @TwilightsLastGleam That's everything GB wishes he could be :)

  • @TwilightsLastGleam no fool!! thats doc watson...dont think twice!

  • Something nobody probably thinks about is how he memorizes the words to all of the songs he sings. Most people can't remember the words to even one song completely and he has never even read the words. What a genius!

  • fantastic he has soul and passion. amazing. if i could play half as good. i never post but had to on this. more

  • I can´t believe that he is blind.

    what an incredible man.

  • I first seen this footage when I was 12 years old and that fact about his sight never ceases to amaze me I agree he was an incredible man with amazing talent and a deep sense and soul felt feel.

  • yeh the people making those kinds of decisions aren't the voice of the public. we decide who the best are, and Doc Watson is certainly one the best the has ever been.

  • Why is he not included in any "Best blues guitarist" lists?

  • Because there are some idiots in this world.

And among them are those who write these lists

  • parece o george bush...... sera qe nao é ele? uhsushus

  • he kinda looks like goerge bush,

  • i thought the same thing

  • @havokbaphomet666 Funny, he does look like him. So does Chet Atkins as he got older.

  • @havokbaphomet666

    yes loooool

  • Supreme honors and accolades to Doc, a living legend of the highest order, but OMG, this vid does look like W. Bush fingerpicking a standard....

    LoL!!!!!

  • looks like george bush playing the blues haha awesome

  • it does lol

  • Why would you want to insult Doc by comparing him to our former Idiot-In-Chief GW Bush? Too bad Bush didn't have even half the ability as President that Doc has as a guitar player.

  • wh do you say his style is Merle inspired? Is that Merle Travis?

  • yes yes yes

  • He makes me want break my guitar on a post he is so good.

  • absolytley motionless...

  • The master! Finally saw him in concert and new I was seeing a true living legend. Greatest folk singer of our time.

  • bush?

  • lol

  • Just great.

    To jest to. :)

  • Superb, there is no other word.

  • the purpose of music like this is to escape from politics, business, work, and all those other mean and horrible stuff that sets us against each other.

  • Cool!

    Thanks for sharing Flyhead! :-)

  • Doc is a National Treasure. Please don't ruin it with meaningless political crap.

    Thank You

  • he looks like bush :))

  • it seems all the master blues players were blind

  • Is this George Bush?
