I love this guy so much. First saw him in 1964 at the Ash Grove in West Hollywood, saw him last maybe 12 years ago in Brentwood at the VA hall. I'm lucky to have had such chances. He's never been anything but masterful at everything he touches.
Its funny how Doc can play this good Blind and we have a full line of people at the welfare dept. who can't seem to get off their lazy asses. So pathetic !!
Doc Watson is a piece of American history! His music has inspired generations! Musicians and good honest people like him are getting harder to find! God bless Doc Watson! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
hey guys, fans of Doc Watson should definitely check out Kent Gustavson's new book, "Blind But Now I See, The Biography of Music Legend Doc Watson " @ his Facebook page, "Doc Watson Book".
See how in the E chord Doc covers the A and D string with one finger? His ornaments to the B7 are fascinating. I also like the way his runs are so clear and efficient. No wonder the man sounds good.
To judge from its neck and the shape of the headstock, it looks like a Santa Cruz to me. But don't ask me which model, probably a custom guitar. At least the inlays are not on any Santa Cruz I know of. In any case, Doc has long been known to play Santa Cruz guitars.
@IBG67 It's actually a guitar built by master luthier John Arnold. John Arnold and Wayne Henderson are actually good friends and equally great luthiers.
Yes, a National Treasure, and American Folk Music master. And he can play any music he would have a mind to. Thank God he chose acoustic instruments, 'cause a buddy of mine had some old kitchen recordings, and Doc was wailin' on an old Les Paul. Check out the "Docabilly" recording for some real fun. (Still on acoustic, but Duane Eddy sits in on "Thunder Road". Totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!
This old bird is why I pick. Doc is up in years, so get him while you can. Thank God Doc is well recorded. When he leaves us it will break my heart for sure. One of the best old box pickers and greatest contributors to the body of work. With all the respect and admiration I can muster...here's to you, Doc.
Doc Watson is my hero! He's an honest to goodness American treasure! He makes it look so easy and so fun, the way it should be! Excellent!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
i wish more people knew of Doc Watson these days and ages. being a carolina native. i grew up with my grandparents listening to him on a daily basis. much of his music shaped my character, i would like to believe it also made me a better person. Long Live Doc!
The guitar Doc is playing in this video is made by John Arnold of Newport TN. Some folks think getting a Wayne Henderson guitar is impossible lol trying to get an Arnold is 50 times harder to get. The ones who are lucky enough to own one are extremely lucky!!!!
It is cool to see Doc fingerpicking, as he is known as the greatest flatpicker. Thirty years ago, when we could only hear him on old vanguard records, I knew he had to be doing some of this in a fingerstyle.
To Alan62651, check out some of the Merle Travis videos on Youtube. He only used his thumb and index finger, and his other three fingers are anchored to the body of the guitar. Chet Atkins used his thumb, index and middle fingers. Doc's fingerpicking style is like Travis', while Merle Watson also used his middle finger like Chet Atkins did.
I've learned a simpler version of this song. Doc's version is hard as nails. But I'll get it down someday. You have to absorb these things over a period of time. I understand that now.
I've been playing for a year and 3 months and I've come a long way since then. I think in a few months I'll start posting videos.
Not really a Travis pick. Doc picks with thumb and forefinger only, whereas Merle and his disciples use 1st and 2nd fingers. Interestingly, Doc defines the sound for a lot of tunes that end up in a "Travis picking" style by others.
It's hard to tell in the video, but I thought I remembered him saying that he was a 1-finger picker, and Merle was the Merle Travis disciple. It's been a long time, so I may be mistaken.
@420Cannabis It is John Arnold guitar, don't even try to look for his website. He doesn't have one. Mr. Arnold's build list is very exclusive and his guitars are some of the best sounding guitars in the world. Maybe if you contact him, you might be able to do what most people who contact him never can, get a guitar.
Something nobody probably thinks about is how he memorizes the words to all of the songs he sings. Most people can't remember the words to even one song completely and he has never even read the words. What a genius!
I first seen this footage when I was 12 years old and that fact about his sight never ceases to amaze me I agree he was an incredible man with amazing talent and a deep sense and soul felt feel.
yeh the people making those kinds of decisions aren't the voice of the public. we decide who the best are, and Doc Watson is certainly one the best the has ever been.
Why would you want to insult Doc by comparing him to our former Idiot-In-Chief GW Bush? Too bad Bush didn't have even half the ability as President that Doc has as a guitar player.
