When I lived in Germany in the early '90s, the Cokes and Pepsi we'd get from the commissary (US Army grocery store) would usually be close to a year old by the time we got them. They would have set in a warehouse for long periods of time. If you would just open them and take a sip, they'd have a nasty metallic taste to them. You'd have to slightly shake them in order to mix them up. They tasted alright after that.

I do not mean to make fun of you, or anything like that, but no matter how old it is, it will ALWAYS be fizzy. The thing that makes it fizz it Co2 pressure that is pumped into the syrup / water mixture, unless there is a way for the Co2 to get out of the can, it will be like that forever.

Yea, but I am saying that without a small puncture in the can itself it CANNOT go flat, it is impossible. Because unless the Co2 escapes the confines of the can, it won't go flat it will still be bubbly... it will taste bad after 10 years because the chemicals in the soda start to break down and probably erode the sides of the can a little, but it won't go flat.

Well, I don't think that is true either, the path of least resistance is for the Co2 to press back in between the water / syrup molecules after it is done fizzing after you shake it.

Try it, shake a soda a whole bunch then let it sit for 1 day and then open it and drink... it will be fizzy. You could do this with a 10 year old soda too.

The path of most resistance is to pressurize the very small airspace above the liquid. The bubbles are Co2 (carbon dioxide)

yea.. it has to or else when you shook a can of soda, it would explode no matter how long you waited to open it.

I think actually, that when you shake the can it is sort of sifting the liquid away from the Co2 bubbles... so they float closer to the top of the can, then they slowly settle back down once you stop shaking

Think about it this way; if you shake a can of soda, most people will say "we will let that one sit for awhile before we open it" thats because once the shaking stops, right away the Co2 bubbles try to restore normality with the pressure within the can.
