@TonyRJ1989 Its all about personal preference. What some do not like, others will. The evidence of maturity is understanding that reality, looking at the positive in things you like without being critical of others.

well said retreiver, one should use the talents God gave us so Christian bands should not limit themselves with the same chord progressions all the time. For an ordinary listener like most pople, they usually dont understand it. But musicians can see the similarities. ..and rock n roll is not the devil's music. don't be fooled by 1950's anti-rock propaganda that lasted until today.
For everyone saying contemporary christian music is too mainstream remember, christians live in the same world as lost people. God created music of all kinds. It's the lyrics that are the message. We are to live redemptively. This means that in everything you do, do it for the glory of God. Before you do anything ask God to bless it, this will prevent you from doing something that you know doesn't bring God glory. If a style causes someone to hear a solid gospel message in a song then so be it.
I agree with you Retriever. Third Day is my favorite Christian band, however, I find a lot of the others in this genre very one dimensional and lyrics so repetitive, it's like chanting. Ugh!
I like third day alot but i wish there were a few more progressive Christian bands out there. It seems like all Christian music is one dimensional with very little creativity.
Skillet is good, like them alot but when i say progressive i mean musicians that define what they do. Skillet is still just a mainstream rock group. Take secular bands like tool, muse, avenged sevenfold, the pumpkins. You never see Christian bands dive into those waters even though these bands have achieved a great deal of success doing what they do. Its all music and, if anything, those that worship the one that created it should be more in awe of what it can do.
Christian music is NOT about trying to BE like mainstream media; we are set apart, the bible says ... look @ Keith Green for example; he was SO talented but did not count it loss to NOT make his music more appealing to the mainstream ... he let Him write the songs for him and be used as a vassel for His mighty works. And it's not "ALL about music" - it's about HIM and what He has done for us by His Son and thru His Spirit.
To a musician it is all about the music. All that contemporary christian music is is pop with christian lyrics. Why should christians limit themselves in their music, if god created it then there is nothing that would not be glorifying to him (if you want to talk aobut it in that light). Whether it be neo-classical, jazz, fusion, whatever it may be its all using his creation much for passionately than simple 1 key fits all chord progressions. A true musician is never satisfied with conformity.
Well said....we need to remember that the main stream has ties to satan also and the whole media backing.... as Christian (and bands) we need to stay clear of the trap of mainstream music producers and marketers!
Do you realize that Christian music is far more mainstream than most of the greatest band? They all use the same chordal progressions, uncreative vocal lines, and just in general, bland music. You will never see a Christian band match the creativeness of bands like Metallica, Tool, the Chile Peppers. There are some talented Christian solo artists but they get ignored because Christians are so used to G, C, D, Em that they can't appreciate good music. Christian music is not for the musician.
Like all music genres simple, more of the same, just like the last hit seems to reach the top. As creative as Metallicais it took them many years to reach the popularity they have now. I do not listen to very much Matalica any longer(the lyrics are too negative for me) but I used to be a fan before the rest of the world found them. There are some great, very creative Christian groups out there P.O.D., Disciple and Family Force Five. P.O.D.
@retriever7746and2 Why are you watching the vid if you hate it so much? go listin to disciple or underoath if ya want talented Christian Bands but Iove Third Day!
@MrJenLedger My point is that there are no christian rock bands that compare musically to secular rock bands. Take a bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Tool, Rush, Atheist, Metallica, Dream Theatre...music can be so much more than what Christian bands have reduced it too! I'm not trying to make a statement against your faith, i'm simply saying that these artists quest for mainstream acceptance of their message has reduced their music to bland poppy predictability. Music is so much bigger than that!
@retriever7746and2 Yea I totally understand were your coming from. I like it though. but yea I love bands like Metallica Pearl jam and Alice in Chains!
@retriever7746and2 .Out of all the bands you mentioned, every single one has at least two Christians in it so that puts paid to your theory, and you have obviously never heard of bands like Underoath, Kutless, Stryper,Red, Disciple etc etc etc....for every mainstream band there is a Christian band playing exactly the same music but the lyrics are so much better. I do however agree with what you say about music being bigger than that..it was after all created by our amazing God., Blessings, :o)
