  • st.vinecent is d number one island

  • i love garifuna people they are very cool..

  • Im from Nicaragua and I love our peoples from the Atlantic. They add diversity and spice to the country as a whole. Im proud and honoured that we share our beautiful country.

  • I agree I love it... It's nice, simple and right to the point.

  • I love your video!

  • haha i wanted to learn garifuna but im not smart enough, i am not a decendent of the garifuna ppl yet i am a decendent of hondurans and punta music really imspires me

  • The real story is that the Garifuna escaped on the ship, and KILLED their would be slave owners before shipwrecking on St Vincent. This business about all the white people dying in a hurricane or by the shipwreck is a re-write of white history that even many Garifuna believe. How could all the white people on the ship die from hurricane, shipreck, but the slaves, who would have been at the BOTTOM of the ship, shackled together miraculously survive? THINK PEOPLE

  • Thank you for working hard in preserving the Garifuna tradition through your creative video. Congratulations. This is the kind of action we need our yougsters to be aware of. Thank you. Luz F. Soliz (Igemeri)

  • you guys forgot to mention you came from west Africa on a slave ship. yo is is me or do people have a hard time calling themselves African. This dude said that the Garifuna people originated in St. Vincent lmao self hatred is scary.

  • @OLUTHEDON Yes we are west African people mixed with the natives. The difference is that Garifuana people have been living a west indian culture for over 400 years. Garifuana languange and culture is Arawak not African.

  • @Blazemess they look more like the Africans

  • @OLUTHEDON how is this self hatred....when the drum is combine in the african n arawark..you tell me how could they go back to africa when they couldnt build from a wrecked ship..so what they do? combine and form the garifuna with the arawark..i dislike it when so called ''states black'' act as if they have a right to say who is proud or not..if yur so mad..ask yo family why didnt they fight white colonization but instead of allow it.im proud of these people bc they fought oppression...

  • All people period are from Africa.

  • It is very interesting to me that the people in this video, and much of the elements of Garifuna culture have an African origin, yet I hear no mention in this video about the history and contribution of Africans. I hear about Spanish, French, English, Arawaks & Caribs. There some references in the poem, but they are never verbalised.

  • Culture is very very important, and the United States is not a good place for anybody's culture. We must leave the United States. We can survive without qwhat the US has to offer. We must not be a part of that.

  • My family is Garifuna From Honduras! when people ask me where im from i don t know what to say. i was born in Newyork

  • @pinkysux JUST SAY IM GARIFUNA FROM HONDURAS MY FRIEND NO FEAR GOD BLESS YOU IM FROM HONDURAS ALSO LIVE IN KANSAS CITY MISSOURI

  • Why isnt anyone speaking Garifuna? My co-worker needs a language sample of someone speaking it for her college assignment and in the 9th hour, we can't find 1 single clip here on Youtube. Wow

  • Linguistically, the Spanish language is a "Romance language" and is one of the aspects (including "laws" and general "ways of life") that causes Spaniards to be labelled a Latin people. Spanish was exported to the Americas due to over three centuries of Spanish colonial rule starting with the arrival of Christopher Columbus to Santo Domingo in 1492. No wonder dark skin natives get second class treatment in Latin America! Columbus ppl still in rule even unto this day! FIGHT THE POWER!

  • Spanish people or Spaniards constitute the "European" nationality and ethnic groups native of Spain. The official language of Spain is Spanish. Substantial populations with Spanish ancestry, the result of Spanish emigration, also exist in other parts of the world, most notably in "Latin America".

  • True Latins are Romans!!!!!! So saying you're Latin is an Italic language, originally spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome. Italian derives diachronically from Latin, and is the closest national language to Latin. Italians don't even speak "they're supposed language". Latino identifies yourself with Rome / pope. why everyone wanna be a mutant (white) is the question? Blackman = Original man, white = albinism. Research it! I see racist history is a worldwide subject! Same for spanish = Spainard YT

  • Noraida te puliste. Thanks for the video.

  • Garfuna is hard to learn i only speak Spanish

  • idk...wat is alll this fight...if uur garifuna then usually ur from honduras and belize..idk where moscow has to do with this...aanyways im garifuna and speak the language and spanish, english and arabic...Im Honduran and Arab.

    it is a weird accent

  • I think that this video is a great representation of our culture. my recomendation is that you guys should have incorporated the practice on how the language is spoken. and to the individual that said that we are latinos is true but we identify as Garifuna because we are in the land but we are not from the land our culture innitiated before we touched the honduran coast.

  • GARIFUNATRAVEL,COM(YTB)

  • GARIFUNATRAVEL,COM(YTB)the best deal on fligts to honduras

  • Garifuna are african ts not no damn culture yall are african spanish mixed freak in st vincent thay speak english notthis rass yuh egghole speak

  • yeah okay.

  • The bottom line is most of us Garifunas, myself included, wholly acknowledge our african bloodline in addition to our carib indian aspect.Unlike other ethnic groups who are in denial or confusion of their ethnic background, most of us garinagus aren't.I was born in brooklyn ny both my parents hail from Guatemala and i took it upon myself to carefully learn about my beautiful heritage and culture, thus in turn i will be teaching my kid(s) the same.

  • thank u for post this video and giving meii more knowledge about my garfiuna culture. even though u lefted out dat we come from african pplz. buh its all gud every1 makes mistakes.

Garinagu for life.. i love all my garifuna pplz

  • Who is GOING to the HOMECOMING in St. Vincent on July 18 - 23, 2009?

  • I agree that my Garifuna Brothers and sisters need to get off that crazy mentality about them being Indians and everything else but Proud blackmen and women of arfican origin!

  • The majority of us don't subscribe to that excuse my language "bullshit" partner,I should know i am a garifuna born here in nyc and i can tell u first hand that we are well aware of our African/black and carib indian ancestory (hope I spelled that right), we more so identify with our black side then our indian side, u do have garifunas who will readily state that they r "latino" yet do not fully understand the definition of that term.

  • @mellowvision

Um, excuse me they do not deny their African ancestry !

They have a culture that is rooted deep in their blackness/AFricanness but it weaves and mixes the Native American ancestry !

  • Good video...thanks for the education!

  • Thank you for posting this video. I am of honduran parents and I am believe that I am Garifuna. This video is helping me to connect the dots.

  • yes they are of the african descant

  • AND CARIB ARAWAK DESCANT AS WELL

  • ktrachagirl26

mira tu la punta se llama punta porque el baile se baila con las puntas de los pies

  • one simple question porque a la musica le llamaron punta???

  • Thanks for posting!! I want to say so many things but I can't, I can't see the keyboard my eyes are full of tears!

    Thanks for posting!!

  • viva honduras y sus culturas pues

  • After reading through all of these posts, I'm happy to see some Garifuna proud admit the African aspect of their culture.

Someone mentioned the Garifuna as being descended from the Kallinago. Let me tell you. I've visited the Carib Reserve in Dominica West Indies many times. Yes. They call themselves Kallinago. I can tell you, not one soul in this video looks anything like those Caribs. But every soul in this video looks like the African descendants in the African Diaspora!!!!!

  • Trust me the majority of us Garifunas wholly acknowledge our african roots myself included, it just so happens that you have that small percentage that choose to remain in the dark about our lineage to Mother Africa.

  • It is very true.I know many blacks from Honduras and they r one of the very few black folks in Latin America that wholly acknowledge their african roots and its really evident in their music, dance and style of dress.Sometimes I think the culture was transended from Nigeria. Its great to see you hold on to your african roots and not in denial like Puerto Ricans and dominicans sadly to say.

  • thanks for the response we are just one group of african descendents that make up part of the beautiful African Diaspora, it's sad the above groups you have mentioned don't embrace their african ancestry (not all just the majority and more so with dominicans then puerto ricans) that's just basically another form of "white supremacy" at work when you take a closer look at it and understand it.

  • Their language also contains African words. Like most of the English speaking Caribbean, you will find Akan (west African - Ghana) words in their dialect. If they do some more research, this fact will become quite evident. It really pains me the way our people continue to run away from Africa and all thins African. Now, however, that not all Garifuna leave out the African. I visited Belize last August and again in November and met some very African Garifuna. Listen to Garifuna Soul music.

  • The British did meet resistance about the native peoples on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. What made it worse was when Africans (especially the newly arrived ones) would join them and fight against the British. The African resistance was so fierce that, once defeated, the British shipped them, their mixed offspring, and the native peoples to Central American, especially to British Honduras, now Belize. The Garifuna culture is a fusion of the African and "Indian".

  • U KNOW YOUR STUFF.YES ST>VINCENT IS THE ORIGIN ORIGIN OF THE GARIFUNA CULTURE>SOME LOOK MORE CARIB LIKE MYSElF AND SOME LOOK MORE AFRICAN.

  • Firstly, let me congratulate you all for taking the time to document your culture and put it out there. I understand your fear of losing your culture, as the next generation take little interest in it.

Think then, of how your AFRICAN ancestors must feel since you have obviously forgotten them. The young woman falsely claims that the Garifuna are Carib and Arawak. No mention of the African at all.

  • I'm not a garifuna but I love you people dearly, I was born in El progreso Yoro y soy mestizo, in my most beautiful memories I remember my garifuna friends. I was always invited to enjoy kasabe and such. Much love to you my friends. Roberto From Las Vegas

  • and also dont believe the hype Garifunas were there pre columbus yes the shipwreck happened but there were already Africans who had mingled with the Caribs pre columbus it amazes me that some Garifuna do not know this

    please learn your history

  • I wish the ignorance would stop blacks were not only brought to the US ....we were brought everywhere. Use the internet and learn! The documentary was great but there are some flaws

    Garifuna language is * 45 % Arawak * 25 % Carib * 15 % French * 10 % English

  • @napturaldiva904

Garifuna language also has some Spanish in it too ! lol ! So it is probably 10% Spanish !!!!

  • I love this documentary, but how come nothing is mentioned about Africa? Do the Garifuna think there are no African elements in their culture? These people are obviously BLACK. I assume they think they weren't brought from Africa like all other black people in the world. Be proud of your culture, but don't be ashamed of its Africanness, geez. Very interesting documentary, though.

  • Correction,we are fully aware of our African ancestry this small documentary is good but it does not fully and totally accurately get into depth about us Garifunas, trust me when i tell you this. I personally sent a response to these brothers speaking of just that and i as a full blooded garifuna born here in nyc do not appreciate Africa being excluded from any documentary covering us you understand.

  • How the fuck come I get the thumbs down? NONE OF THE PEOPLE I TOLD KNEW THAT THERE WERE BLACK PEOPLE IN HUNDURAS!! You can say that there are Black/Afrikan people everywhere but seein them is a different thing. JACKASSES.

  • Nah I wasn't knocking you dog. Trust me, I hear that alot. Alot of people don't know that there are black people in latin countries. I get it all day. When I speak spanish to people and tell them what I am...They look at me like I have six heads. Like I'm sound kind of endangered species, and most of the time it's hispanics so don't feel bad bro. I wasn't trying to be hard on you. I can only speak for myself. Anybody else who was dissin you...curse them the f@ck out! lol

  • LOL! Yeah thats true cause you dont hear of Black people in Hunduras. But yeah, now that I know, I wanna go. All of the people Ive meet from Hunduras were Hispanic.

  • yeah man. Any latin country. It's fun when you see a different culture.

  • @Kinghercules

Wow you say that all of the people you have met from HONDURAS were Hispanic.

Um, there is no such thing as a Hispanic race.

Anyone and everyone who comes from a Spanish speaking country is Hispanic/Latino.

So a black person who comes from a Spanish speaking country of Latin America is also HISPANIC/LATINO !!!!

  • 1st off JACKASS there aint no niggas in Moscow (meanin they've been there for the last 200-400yrs) or China.

2nd you JACKASS Hispanics are the native people that have been here before the Europeans or the Afrikan people came. Latinos refer to all Spanish speaking ppl in the Americas.

    JACKASS!!

  • First of all WTF ! And I ain't no jackass ! Who you callin a jackass ! Please don't use the word nigga. It makes you sound ignorant and like a jackass THE N WORD is not okay to use at all regardless how it is written said or spelled !

Anyways, contrary to your ignorant statements, there are "NIGGAS" in Moscow.

  • Anyways, contrary to your ignorant statements, there are "NIGGAS" in Moscow. There are plenty of black people in Moscow. And BTW, Moscow is the capital of RUSSIA ! ANd black people have been in Moscow for more than 1,400 years ! Many blacks were brought there as slaves! Don't forget there was an ARAB slave trade. And there are black people in CHINA as well ! They have been there for hundreds of years also!

  • Also, you JACKASS Hispanics are not the native people referring to the people that have been here before the Europeans or the African people !

These people who were known as being here first are called Indigenous or Native Americans !

And Hispanic is not a race ! The term is interchageable and referrs to anyone who identifies with Spanish influenced culture and language and customs !

Latinos refers to all those people who are Spanish speaking mainly from Latin America !

  • @Kinghercules

    Are you Afro Latino ?

  • There are black people in Moscow ! They been there for more than 1000 years !

  • THE GARIFUNA REVOLUTION IS HERE!! our culture is so rich and diverse and its about time for US to start taken pride on who we are and at the same time let the WHOLE WORLD know what we are. i just wanna think these people for this video( i think is missing some info but over all its well put together)

  • I'm so proud of my honduran culture, I'm not garifuna, actually i look like a gringo, pero I know that i have it on my blood, viva honduras papa, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Are you serious that you didn' know that?!?! lol

We are everywhere. I'm Panamanian and Puerto Rican, and I'm black. I'm not criticizing you, but you really didn't know that there were blacks in Honduras? Please tell me you knew there were blacks in other latino countries?!

  • No I did not. How many niggaz in the hood see and hear about Black people in Hunduras?

  • its honduras.....not hunduras

  • the reality is that there are many people of african descent in latin america look at the coast of colombia from cartagena to buenaventura it's mostly all black also some parts of the coast of mexico has people of african descent also peru nicaragua ecuador and so many others have black folks most people in the us just don't know .......

  • @bago510 YA BUT MOST ARE INDIANS ATLEAST I HOPE THEY ARE

  • @lisenyoudontknowme Indians and Africans most people are just in denial of there African Ancestery which is stupid .

  • @bago510 thats because africans are ugly

  • Blacks are global...You should really look into the African Diaspora. Not even just the U.S., Africa, and Central America but Mexico, South America, Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Middle East, Russia (and all over Europe). We're everywhere!!

  • @fbnarcisse

I know black people are in every country all because of slavery !

  • @Kinghercules

Wow, you did not know black people were in Honduras !

    That is crazy !

That is like saying there are NO black people in the USA !

Black people are in every country in the world bro !

  • I love this video but there is a very important part that I did not hear. It was said that we started out in St. Vincent but but we started out in Kemet (Africa) west africa to be exact. We were here first as evident by the Olmec pyramids and sculptures. Our language has african tongue as well. Our story goes way further than St. Vincent. We need to embrace it. We were the civilizers not the civilized. Much love and respect.

  • its nice to see good things about my black people. im african american, my husband is from progreso yoro honduras. we listen to punta and everything here in the house. people even ask me if im from honduras. any way i love my black people no matter where we are from.

  • muy buen trabajo!!!!

  • My parents are from Belize and they're Garifuna.

  • Punta is a courtship dance danced at wakes when someone passed away. It is a couple dance, but can be danced by one person in the ring as well. Punta rock is the punta beat along with traditional or non traditional songs with the addition of guitars, keyboards, congas, drum set, etc punta rock began in Dangriga Belize, by the Trutle Shell Band. While Punta has always been danced from St. Vincent to now.

  • What is Punta? I keep seeing it come up when I watch Garifuna videos. Please reply someone.

  • Great video, Garifuna People ( Garinagu) reside in many countries, lets stop grouping us into clubs, like from honduras, belize , guatemala. We are one people with one language, we are probably the only blacks who have our own language still intact from our creation. We were forced to almost give this up. Remember Joseph chatuyer wabuti he died so that we can be free of all these governments strong hold over us. So no viva to Honduras, belize or any others, they are still killing us off today.

  • how are they Killing us The british left us to die in Rotan and honduras Let us Spreed threw central america and we are not all black sum of us have Armaridian decent

  • Yes, we are not all blacks, but majority of us are, I do agree that we have some mix in us, since a lot of us don't want to claim Africa or black because it is associated with the bottom, we look for the mulato look and say yeah look at that beautiful Garifuna person, where I am from I see very few Amerindian decent Garinagu, maybe where you are from you see them quite often, I don't deny they exist, I see Caucasians claiming to be Garifuna

  • im garifuna and im brown i look like a typical honduran kid i jus wish my skin was black tho cuase i feel so outsider but wut u do u mean assiotaed with the bottom? wut part of central america u from ?

  • I was born in southern Belize (Dangriga), but if you notice I don't claim any country because I know historically what certain countries have done to Garinagu. I don't discriminate when it comes to my people, if you have a lighter skin tone to me it does not matter as long as you are Garifuna we are brothers. The problem I have is when our elders bend over backwards to educate others about Garifuna culture and language and neglect to educate their own kids at home. I don't want to sound bitter .

  • i got fam bam around there but wut i don get is wut happend i tought jus the brits screwed us over im garifuna but i i was born in hondu and i mean i have hondu pride cuase thtas all i know if i were to go to st vincent and be there most likely ppl whoulnt give a care if i was like im home yeah i notie elderw talk about it and teach others i regreat not knowing the language but i do incourge youngeters to speak it cuaase i know itsa dieing langauge

  • look at La Banda Blanca, you could not tell them that they were not Garifuna People. They really thought that Garifuna was fashion and not People. It is my opinion that most Garinagu from Honduras don't represent us well anyway. I think that after God should come your culture, but I see with Honduran Garifuna, that is not so, look at their pro soccer players, they go abroad and don't even mention Garifuna, you would think that this would be an opportunity to promote their culture but they don't.

  • Look at David Suazo, Pando Ramirez, Tyson Nunez and many others, they should world know that they are a part of a unique group of people I have yet to hear any of them mention Garifuna, but they would grab the Honduran flag and run around with it before they would grab a Garifuna flag, to me I find that sickening.A man that does not know his history or culture is like a tree without roots.

  • Don't get me wrong I want them to succeed to the highest level,I just wish they would do things a little different, anyway I am starting to sound bitter, I am just frustated that it is our time to shine as Garinagu and we are not siezing the opportunity. One Love to all people, not just Garinagu. Aban Isien houn sun mutu, Bungiu Baba furumein.

  • DIFFTYPE, Garifuna is an Indian language it follows and Arawak structure. The men incorporate Carib words when we speak Garifuna.

  • Diamepiece, We Garinagu are indegenous to St. Vincent because we are direct descendants of the Carib Indian who call themselves Kallinago......

Blackvagina Garifuna is the mixture of African, Carib and Arawak Indian. Their were never and and have never been Garinagu in Africa, but their has always been Kallinagu in St. Vincent. The Garinagu are a mixture of the African and Kallinagu

  • So, the Garifuna are not descendants of African slaves?? They are indigenous to St. Vincent?

  • Damn girl....How do you think the slaves got to St. Vincent? They came from AFRICA...

ALL black people originally descended from Africa.

  • Exacly, the Garifuna languge was formed when African slaves faught back against the Spanish slave owners and made the slave ship wreck.

Africans died in the Carribean sea but alot of them made it to St. Vincent and grew with the Arawak Indians. They had some help from the French.

The Garifuna language is a mix of the west African languge "Swahili", Arawak and some French.

    Mabuiganiahun sun Garinagu hayabinia.

  • Garifuna, is mostly Arawakan, with elements of Spanish and French. Men have elements of Carib in their speech. Only 1 word, "Mutu", is of African origin. We are prodominantly African, but our language is not.

  • @blackvagina everyone decended from africa dummy

  • i love this video.i am a proud garifuna serving in the U.S. Navy, plus i'm from corozal the same place where ya'll family is from. thanks for this video

  • Idibia (hello), I was in you exact same boondocks years ago in the midlant fleet (VA). Garinagu nedujeju.

  • Felicidaes!!!!! Muy buen trabajo.....Viva Honduras!!!

  • hey wats up my name is Eric Arriola , great documentary great work. god bless and take care.

  • y arriba los morenitos de livingston puerto barrios guatemala

  • I came back from livingston guatemala and well i liked garifuna culture

  • blackwolvie.....Are you reffering you comment to me???? Because I reffered to Mr. Guity. I am a Garifuna from Triunfo de la Cruz, Honduras and proud of it..... apply your advice to yourself. If youd did research you would find out Garifuna was recognized as a language by UNESO

  • No disrespect, but the comment was not directed to you only to those individuals within our culture who provide incorrect information.

  • Do your own resaerch folks,I've noticed some of you other garifunas(that's if you are one) have a tendency in providing misinformation concerning OUR culture, show some tact, know what the heck your talking about aside from that, keep doing your thing Mr. Guity.

  • To the young man by the name of Christian Guity in the video....Just want to correct him on something, Garifuna is not a dialect it is a language.......

  • Lehgs. You are very correct....the older people in my family can speak Garifuna without any spanish or english.....Now my generation puts in Spanish and English. But you are very right.....Garifuna can be spoken without English or Spanish...

  • i'm pr0ud t0 say that i have garifuna ancestry. G0d bless my culture!

  • Cool!

    I like your culture! lol

Im Salvadoran and we actually eat like the same things! From what I heard in the video.

    I love your music too!

    Good video!

  • love the video i,m salvadoran and mexican and i have been studying african culture in mexico and central america and this video is one of the best i,ve seen .

  • The garifuna language is derived from female Arawakan the male Carib. however, the mixture of french and English is the adaptability of Griffin to integration..french and English weren't capable of learning garifuna,so garifuna downgrade to their language.

  • Thank you.

  • thank you for bringing a deeper understanding of the garifuna culture to tthe masses. I am a proud garifuna women and i just wanterd to say thanks!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for all the information, great job. Im from HONDURAS and im very proud to have the Garifunas culture in our Honduras.lets work together to have a better country. "ARRIBA HONDURAS"

  • Congratulations on your intent to preserve your very amazing and valuable culture. The world may never know the many important contributions you have made to the betterment of humanity through your music, poetry, dance and mystical and scientific endeavors. Monuments should be erected and endowments established to further edify the incredible accomplishments of these noble people.

  • Nice,

Can you do a documentary on garifuna artist in the united States? That would be very interesting.I am a former artist with a lot of information on the rise of punta-rock music in the U.S.
