1934 wasn't much different than today with the never ending economic depression. By then, after 5 years of economic misery, they probably began to accept it as the new normal much as we have in 2012.
What a way to celebrate! To think all the things that were to come in 1934. Queen Mary & Normandie were still being built! And the Mauretania was STILL in service. Wow.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I was just wondering, last night, whether NY's times square was always crowded like that, and it looks like things haven't changed a bit.
Thank you for the great video - it brings me much new insight seeing that people are essentially the same regardless of time and place.
Hey H/Guy. 1933 was like the WORST year of the Depression. That was when it hit absolutely ROCK BOTTOM. After 1933, things did slowly begin to get better, but it would still take another six years.
I just randomly surf the net looking for old video clips. Websites like british pathe and gaumont have good stuff, but the majority can be found in the extras of old DVD movies.

Whoops, I accidently removed my comment here. The song starting at 0:52 is "Night and Day".
Night and day,
You are the one,
The only one for me under the moon,
And under the sun,
So whether near or far,
No matter, darling, where you are,
I think of you, day and night...
Niiiight and daaaay!

Despite the Depression looks like they all hoped for better times in 1934......
