There were more than 850 Brittish soldiers.

This basically spelled the beginning of the end of zulu hegemony in the areas surrounding natal and zululand.

since shaka and the mfecane(the deaths of up to 1 million native africans)the zulu

had anhialated any tribe they came across,and fought an internal civil war culminating in the deaths of 40000 zulu by zulu at ndondakasuka.

Many tribes fled into british territory such was there fear ,this had to end.

22 and 23 jan 1879 spelled the end for the zulu.....thankfully.

Ther are many reasons for this defeat,soft rolled cartridges that stuck,barrells sooted up with powder residue,incomplete intelligence,zulu fanatical bravery(a great deal of them high on drugs)the line strung too thin,

pulleines very limited battlefield experience,the tactical nous of the zulu battlefield commanders,lastly chelmsfords arrogance

but the ordinary redcoat was disciplined

those men had balls. they probably beat the zulus to death with there balls of steel. it did say the fighting went on long into the night if u get me

we did get slaghtered at isandlwana didn't we.. :( if only chelmsford made his own mind on critical reports made to him instead of relying on the false intellegence of his favoured spy...

anyways atleast we pwned at rorkes drift. :D

He tries to decrease the british glory of it......firstly it was 100 british soldiers against 6000+ art rorkes drift and they werent wqell defended....it was a bloody farmhouse.

it was 139 British soldiers with many sand bags and perimetres, it was quite well defended.

It was open and fragile, the zulus had amongst their vast numbers 1200 riflemen and on top of which the brits were forced to fight hand to hand combat whilst taking fire with only a snadbag wall 3 ft high. thats not well defended.
