I'm a gay republican. I wish there were a pro-gay GOP candidate, but for now, the other issues are more important to me at the moment. I hope the party will open up more in the future.
Like the British Tories? Those ones who were only, in anyway gay equality (and not even pro gay rights) when David Cameron become leader? You seriously want to use that as a good comparison?
Most of the democratic politicians in congress are actually anti-gay marriage, just as much as most of the republicans are, they just aren't as open about it. Heck, even Obama is anti-gay marriage. And most republicans are actually anti-small government neocons.
Andrew Sullivan doesn't very well informed on the subject of american politics.
@Alf90100 He knows all this. I think he's just speaking in terms that most Americans (particularly Democrats)--completely brainwashed in political stereotypes--will understand.
The Republican philosophy:we believe in small government, except when it comes to one's reproductive rights, the right to marry the adult you choose, the right to choose to die without suffering in dire pain for years on end,the right to work at job you're qualified for, etc. So where is the "small government" since Repubs want to make every private decision of your life?Oh yeah, they want no government checks on business. No environmental restrictions, workers' rights.Welcome to the Republican party.
If he's a conservative and not a republican, who would he vote for during an election? He clearly, unlike many gays on the right, is aware to the fact that republicans are very anti-gay. So I doubt he would vote for a republican.
Sullivan has a good point, if the gay community becomes taken for granted by Democrats, the gay community will be screwed. This is exactly the problem Labor has. Democrats just assume union workers will only vote Republican, and therefore choose to undermine unions where convenient (see: NAFTA). Union workers in Vermont broke out of this cycle by supporting Independents like Bernie Sanders (a pro-union social democrat).
@spartan2600 Perhaps I'm mistaken, but don't most unions vote Democrat since Republicans are usually anti-union?The most pro-union states tend to be located in historically heavily Democratic areas(Boston,Philly,Chicago,New York),while the states where unions never really had a foothold tend to be Republican(the South,MidWest). But yeah, even as a lifelong Democrat,I will admit that Clinton screwed us over w/NAFTA.That was the beginning of the end of the middle class in America.Thanks,Billy.
@elzakrasz The point is that union workers tend to vote Democrat, but most (not all) Democrats are anti-union. The reason so many in the union leadership tell their members to vote Democrat is because they've become resigned to supporting the party that is the least anti-union. For example, Walker is taking away union rights in Wisconsin, my home state. On the other hand, Cuomo, the Dem Gov. in NY is only slashing union wages, which isn't only less bad.
@elzakrasz that's because the dems and gops are PUPPETS to david rockefeller, evelyn de rothschild, goldman sachs etc. the only true conservatives in america if you read the encyclopedia article on consevativism are the amish and i can't think of any true liberal since everyone has a beef with something like richard jeni pointed out in his last hbo special making fun of the cons and libs.
His accent has become really weird over the years. He sounds like an American trying to do an English accent. Or an Englishman trying to an American accent. I can't really tell which...
There should be a party for people who are not on the left and not socially conservative. The 2 party system does not represent the total spectrum of political plurality in US. 3, 4 or maybe even 5 party's are needed.
This isn’t a 2 party system. It only seems that way because the vast majority of people are in one of 2 parties (Republicans and Democrats). However, if you do your research, there is a sizeable list of acknowledged parties in the U.S. They just don’t have enough people as members to be a threat to the dominant 2.
they haven't listened to any of our concerns, LGBT, environmental, public transportation advocates, healthcare advocates, atheists. they make promises on the campaign trail that they wont even fight for after the election.

Maybe more than two political parties would help the situation? Crazy ideas!
