Jumping spiders are so much different than other species of spiders, the female doesnt eat the male after sex, and the male its not smaller, they behave like most of the animals, they are adorable!!
@Bob. I moved the male into a smaller container. The female seems to be doing good in her new tank and is eating alot..the male is doing good and will only eat flies.I've been looking for more males but only finding females around my yard..Thanks for ur videos and knowledge of these lil critters.
@bob I caught a couple yesterday and i noticed the female abdomen looks big, walks slow and keeps rejecting the male, kinda looks like she's gonna eat him too..so I separated them...is she pregnant already and just looking for a place to lay eggs? How can you tell if female is pregnant ?
@Skrib - Hi, she may already be fertilized and with eggs. If she looks fairly "fat" she may well be with eggs! If so, she will look for a place to build her egg sack nest and lay her eggs. It would be good to remove the maile as she will kill and eat him, if she is not interested in mating.
Had to come back to this video. I wonder if anyone else has footage like this. You may have been the first to witness something like this Bob. It was amazing watching the female gently pull the male into the spider bag to eat the fly. Still stunning everytime I watch this video.
@Torn80cj -Hi friend! I don't think I have ever seen any footage like this before; guess I was just at the right place and right time and circumstances to be so funtunate to capture this little romantic event. Jumping spiders usually hunt alone and for their own eating pleasure; not to share, as far as I know! Sooo, it was an enjoyable filming adventure for me! Glad you noticed that...
@finnster321 - You must live in the plains states to find a "red backed" jumping spider. Wish I could see that type of jumper, but not likely here in Michigan!
@finnster321 - The key to mating is a successful courtship. Then the next trick is for the male to insert a pedipalp into a females (underside) gental area near the epigynum and deposite his sperm. However he mounts the female is not that important...what is, is if he can reach and insert that pedipalp in the right place! Thanks for the comment, and take care.
Bob, this is absolutely amazing. I had a male mate my big female Audax, but both times he finished, he bolted like a man who just stirred up a bee hive. But it was after I cleaned my female spiders container, and when I cleaned it, I had to tear her sleeping bag in the process because of the placement. I wanted to clean it before she laid the eggs, so it wouldn't get too nasty in there for her. She's guarding eggs now, just waiting for the day when I get to see little jumpers and release them.
@Torn80cj - Chris, enjoy the spiderlings and be prepared to feed them! Should see spiderlings in about 28-36 days. PS: Is that dime/penny trick a trick, or just good balance and cyntrifical force? Curious minds want to know!
@BobCsAll The dime penny trick is real, nothing sneaky or deceiving to do it. Balance is not as hard, it's the acceleration and deceleration that has to be done just right, or else the coins fly off or drop off.
Excellent job with the camera work on both videos. You got lucky with both the females in captivity over winter. It means that the females are virgins. From my experience, females that are not virgins (e.g carrying eggs) will not allow males to mate them.
Thanks for this up-close and-personal video. Very interested process. I always wondered how the males inseminate the females with the sperm in their pedipalps!
It was cool that you captured her pulling him in with the fly. As usual, can't wait to see the conclusion!
@supernaturalbc2009 Hi, thanks for the comment. The male actually deposites his sperm on a soft web and "sucks" it up into one of his pedipalps and them inserts his palp into the females epigynum and fertilizes her. The Part 2 of this video explains it better! Bob
Sweet love story...spider style.
