I would personally say, Death Metal is at it's greatest peak as of today. Compare bands such as Cryptopsy, Necrophagist, Gorod, Deaden, Nile, Behemoth (blackened death, but still works), to older bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Obituary, older Deicide, and Carnage.

Now, I'm not saying those older bands sucked, but comparing them on basis of song structure and talent, musically, there is a difference.
