I bought this music when I was 15 and I am now 58 and every time I hear it , it is different and always beautiful. What a fantasic concept and a lesson for mankind. Give us all a chord, a rhythm and freedom to do what we want and we can all make beautiful music.
I suspect that instrumentation is very important for this piece to work. With the wrong ensemble it can actually get kind of annoying. But this is very beautiful. Good job.
That's certainly different to what I was expecting. I was told to listen to this as an example of Minimalist Music.
I have to say it's great 'background noise'. Although after 5 minutes that C note starts to grate on me a little. I wish they would continue exactly as they did, but without that note in the background! I think it would sound softer and easier to listen to... Just my thoughts :)
@HowitzerBug You may like music for 18 musicians by Steve Reich, it's like this but with more of a 'wave like' quality with occasional variation, well I can't really describe it with words but you could give it a try and see if you prefer it.
Adorable music, but I feel sorry for some of those musicians, its problably a torment to be hitting C so sistematically over and over for 30 minutes .. I would go crazy , but the whole piece for the the listener is lovely indeed!
this is the only instance i know of where improvisation is incorporated into classical music. that alone is special. IMO, complexity is nothing special. Complex music has been made for hundreds of years, how does being complex make something special? What is special, is something that's able to be simple yet beautiful, like this piece.
I actually laughed at the stfu-guy, YT posts the answer of comments on top, weird...
but besides that... well, minimal music, I'm very new to this and... hmm I really just don't know what to think about it. It's not good or bad, it's beyond any adjudgement; but I'm wondering...is it still music or just an aggregation of notes?
well, u can say: music is a form of art, and something is a form of art if people stop to look, listen,... at it, so u can actually say that minimalism is music, and actually all songs are aggregation of notes and sounds, so its actually both
well, I said aggregation of notes because usually music - especially classical - has some sort of structure, tells stories and emotions. If I Iisten to this piece, its kinda like listening to the nature...
sound effects without a deeper meaning. It's like a background without the touching melody. But that's just my opinion, maybe my expectation of something we call music is just too close-minded.
There is structure in aleatory such as this. You hit the nail on the head with your "nature" comment.
This piece is predictable, but never the same twice due to the discretion of individual performers and the resulting onstage interplay.
Minimalism is kind of like this (to me anyways)... Instead of composing a picture of something or how something made one feel (take a waterfall, for example) think of minimalism as a representation of such in its natural state.
I think there is some story to the music with this the flow is controlled more by the performers than the composer. I feel a sense of the clockwork functioning of every day life when I hear this peice.
Music doesn't need to have a deeper meaning. The deeper meaning is something that we often assert for some reason or another, whether it was intended by the composer or not.
and this is what minimalist music stands for. The composer lets YOU feel what you want to. He gives the surface of the image and the interpretation is up to you...
I remember this piece. The whole music faculty at CSUSB perform this piece at one of the noon mini faculty recitals. The director of bands played that high C constantly with so much support and expression on the piano like it was the best note in the world. :0)It was an akward piece, but it was interesting to hear all the different sounds and rhythm all in C.
This song is obviously about 10,000,000 dolphins procreating at the same time.

This piece is great.
However, today I've been assigned "the pulse".

@squiresuzuki lol, damn this sucks. I bet I would be off about 15 bpm at the end of the piece. Good luck though ;-)

Its sad how, now overlook this as history. Classical music is immortal but ot to the top 90% of society. Its just sad.

I play this piece in my youth orchestra and it's hard to keep to the quaver beat without the c in the background :)

I know, hitting the C the whole time would be awful... that's why I asked my good friend "MacBook Pro" to do it for me... ;)

Well one would hope I think that a persons experiences are not necessarily complex but meaningful.
People go about finding meaning in whatever differently.
If someone finds something meaningful in say something you consider too complex so what?
