@spamagatti i usually keep about 9 hens and about 3-5 roosters. i don't think i've ever butchered a hen, and i don't think i could. the eggs are too good, lol. i do butcher roosters. all of my chickens are free range and treated humanely, even the ones i raise for food.

chicken like all birds are VERY VERY smart. in fact theyre known to be even smarter than dogs. I can say personally thats a fair assessment. Birds are so social they tend to think theyre human, if raised only around people.

I don't get why you'd stop eating animals just because you like chickens.

I like chickens, I have 4 of my own, but I still eat chicken.

Even if you stop eating them, the chickens which are being farmed for meat are still going to be killed, and eaten as meat. That's what they were born for, meat production. I know that, it doesn't upset me at all.

How about instead of giving up eating meat, you go buy some chickens, keep them as pets, and realise how wonderful they are :)

It is remarkable that chickens can make great pets. It's just like keeping any pet bird. Be prepared for the noise, and frequent cage cleanings, but all in all, they can be extremely playful and affectionate. Btw, I still enjoy eating them too. I just can't bring myself to kill one since I had one for a pet as a kid.

you can buy a chicken for as little as a dollar...i don't think chickens are in shelters because they aren't considered a pet (i have a couple and they are the best) a lot of people are also looking to get rid of chickens so you could get them for free. You also don't have to give your chicken any vaccinations and you wouldnt need to give them any mandatory veterinarian visits unless your chicken gets sick and you want to take him to the vet...

honestly, i found it sooo hard at first because i loved chicken and turkey. i even gave up at first and went back to eating meat.

but the second time i really stuck to it. and i have no desire to eat meat ever again.

it's so easy now.

and not only am i saving the lives of innocent animals, i've lost a ton of weight.

well actually chicken that we eat are breed at factories for food they dont go out and get free roaming chickens then fry them...

so adds to the cruelety being cramped by the hundreds in a dirty room never seeing the outdoors then having a slow suffocating death. the chickens they use for breecing are stacked ontop of eadhother letting excrement fall on the unlucky one below, their babies are taken away from them. just as your mother may have sang to you chickens sing to their eggs. when the eggs turn to chickens they are fed hormones to grow faster and most grow so fast their legs can't support their body.

Most shelters have to charge adoption fees and if any pet gets sick, they will require vet care. I do not think chickens get vaccinations though....

Beatiful Hen! I had two eggs I was incubating but in the middle of tuning one of the eggs fell on the floor. The wrose part was there were veins and an embyo inside. It was so sad. The other egg is still in the incubator and developing. I am so sad for loosing the other egg. I love your chicken though. She is soooooooooo cute.

Don't feed them meat, don't feed them citrus fruits, don't leave them unattended if you live in a neighborhood full of cats and dogs....

Buy a huge sack of calcium enriched birdfeed, let it graze on the lawn, keep its water fresh and you're good to go!

They also love strawberries, bananas, apples, dandelions and lettuce from what I've seen.
